Who was the Edward Wingate who fought and reportedly perished by execution at the Battle of Goliad in the struggle for Texas Independence? The preponderance of documented evidence leads to the conclusion that the soldier so martyred in March of 1836 was from Alabama and the husband of Isabella McCall. However, descendants of Edward Taylor Wingate (1802-1868) have a strong family tradition that he was the soldier at Goliad and that, despite reports to the contrary, he survived, later served with Texas volunteers in the War with Mexico, and died in 1868 in Trinity County, Texas.
The question takes on more interest by speculation of two similary named men at Goliad, kinship by those two men, and testimony by some survivors of the battle and massacre that Wingate died at Goliad and by others that he escaped.
This page was created to present information about these two men and to share any information that might help resolve the question.
