INTRODUCTION

"Central Asia is revealed to be an important reservoir of genetic diversity, and the source of at least three waves of migration, leading into Europe, the Americas and India." Modern humans migrated out of Africa into Central Asia before spreading both east and west into North America and Europe, says an international team of scientists who have used modern DNA analysis to trace ancient migrations. "Around 40-50,000 years ago, [approximately 2000 generations] Central Asia was full of tropical trees, a good place for hunting and fishing," said Nadira Yuldasheva of the Institute of Immunology at the Academy of Sciences, Tashkent, Uzbekistan. "Then, as desertification came in, some people moved west into Europe and some moved into Siberia, [India] and on into North [and South] America." Originally, this LORENZ family must have descended from the Franks [who] were one of several west Germanic tribes who entered the late Roman Empire from Frisia as foederati and established a lasting realm in an area that covers most of modern-day France and the region of Franconia in Germany, forming the historic kernel of both these two modern countries. (2) The below links are a genealogical resource for our LORENZ family written by KATHERINE BERTSCH COMPAGNO: Copyright 2005, All Rights Reserved, and photographs of the LORENZ ancestral villages taken September 2007. LEVERENZ.

"Origin Displayed: German.

Spelling variations include: LORENTZ, LORRENTZ, LORENZ, LORENTZEN (HOLSTEIN), LAURENZ, LAURENS, LAVERENZ, LAFRENZ, LEWERENZ, LOHRENSON, LORNSEN, LORANT, LORINCZ and many more.

First found in Hessen, where the family became noted for its many branches within the region, each house acquiring a status and influence which was envied and enrolled by the princes of the region.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: GEORG LORENZ, who came to Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1694; as did HEINRICH LORENZ in 1701; and JOHANNES LORENTZ, who came to New York City in 1709. Numerous bearers of the name LORENZ also came to Texas in the 1840s and 1850s, including TRAUGOTT LORENZ, CHRISTINE LORENZ, and JOHANN HEINRICH LORENZ with his wife ANNA CATHARINA REINKEN and their three children." (3) The above quote is from House of Names.com.

LORENZ has been used as a German male first name. It is the German form of LAURENTIUS or LAURENCE. LAURENCE is the English form of the name derived "from the Roman cognomen Laurentius, which meant "of Laurentum". Laurentum was a city in ancient Italy, its name probably deriving from Latin laurus "laurel". Saint Laurence was a 3rd-century deacon and martyr from Rome. According to tradition he was roasted alive on a gridiron because, when ordered to hand over the church's treasures, he presented the sick and poor." (4) The above quote is from Behind the Name.

SUDETENLAND.

Sudetenland             Bohemia.

REGIONS OF GERMAN OCCUPANCY IN BOHEMIA/MORAVIA.

"Sudetenland is a term for the German settlement area of the Bohemian Lands (Bohemia, Moravia, Austrian Silesia), used only sporadically before 1918. The German ethnic group in Bohemian Lands with approximately 3.5 million citizens was named ca. since the beginning of 20C as "Sudetendeutsche" (Sudeten Germans), before German-Bohemians, Austrians, etc. The Bohemian Lands were until 1918 part of the Austrian Monarchy. 1918-1938 Sudetenland was part of Czechoslovakia. After the "Mnchner Abkommen" (The Munich Agreement), 1938, Sudetenland was the official term (1938-1945) for the Reichsgau Sudetenland. After the end of WWII Sudetenland was again reintegrated into Czechoslovakia and its German ethnic group was expelled." (5) The above quote is from Sudetenland.

Prior to 1918, the region of Bohemia, Moravia, and Austrian Silesia were part of the Austrian Empire. "The duchy of Franconia (Herzogtum Franken) consisted in early medieval times of the river Main region, the central Rhine river area (roughly Worms - Cologne) and Hesse. [The] history [of] Franconia, one of the five tribal duchies of Germany, was founded in the ninth century. Its name was derived from the Franks who settled there early in the Middle Ages. It later split into West-Franken or Rhein-Franken (around the city of Mainz) and East- or Main-Franken (around the city of Wrzburg). Since about 1200 AD the name "Franken" was only applied to the Main-Franken-part. Most of this area passed to Bavaria on the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1803-1806. Franconia was then divided into three administrative districts: Upper Franconia (Ober Franken), Lower Franconia (Unter Franken), and Middle Franconia (Mittel Franken). They now form the northern segment of the state of Bavaria." (7) The above quote is from Franconia/Franken.

Below is a postcard of Schnlinde, Bohemia (Krsn Lpa) (Austria) (Czech Republic) 56.4 miles North of Prague, coordinates: 5054 1431. Schnlinde, (Krsn Lpa) dates to 1361. Thirty German families from Upper Franken where asked to colonize the area by the descendants of the Lords of Lipa. In 1857 a large part of the city burned and in the Austrian - Prussian War of 1866 a part of the Prussian Army with 2000 men was quartered in Schnlinde. A history of the town can be found at http://www.krasnalipa.cz/en/mesto.htm. "This undated postcard shows the southwestern corner of the market square with the present-day museum and the adjacent part of the town with the main road to Chibsk. In the background are the peaks of the Lusatian range with the Mt. Jedlov (left). A postcard from the collection of Mr. Stanislav Kopeck." DOCUMENTS ON THE EXPULSION OF THE SUDETEN GERMANS: SURVIVORS SPEAK OUT - www.wintersonnenwende.com.

Schnlinde: Report No. 314 - Young people murdered, deportation camp, rape. Reported by: N. N. Report of 3 July 1950.

"Our home town Schnlinde [56.4 miles North of Prague] is 6 km away from the Saxon border. It was a totally German town, with all of 17 Czech inhabitants. In June 1945 the first expulsion took place, of 1,500 German businessmen, teachers and officials. Each family was allowed to take as much clothing and linen as they could carry, but everything that was new and nice was confiscated during the body search conducted at the outskirts of the town. Then they were driven out in long, pitiful treks, urged on with whip lashes and blows from rifle butts, to the border via the longest possible detour, 25 km via Dittersbach. Naturally most of the expellees had to leave the rest of their possessions lying by the wayside when they became too exhausted to carry them further. All the prominent male inhabitants were arrested, including Dr. Petzold the chief surgeon from the hospital, and were brutally beaten every day and forced to do the most demeaning work. Water and bread was all they got to eat. The Mayor and his family, a doctor, and many others put an end to their torment by committing suicide. Weeks later, the prisoners were taken to the infamous concentration camp Rabstein near Bohemian Kamnitz. I want to mention one case in particular, namely the Khler family. The father and his two 17-year-old sons (twins) were arrested. The two boys were inhumanly beaten, and trampled with boots, until they showed no more signs of life; their father was forced to watch the torture until his sons were dead. A short time later he too was finished off.

In July a second wave of expulsions from Schnlinde was carried out, accompanied by the same maltreatment. In the meantime a similar kind of trek, 2,400 people, arrived from Warnsdorf, which was located right by the border; nonetheless the people were herded via Schnlinde to Hermsdorf, a distance of 27 km. On three-wheeled handcarts, wheelbarrows and the like, they carted their ill and elderly family members to their wretched fate. So that we would not get in their way, we were removed to the Czech interior, as labor slaves. We were taken to the limestone quarry of Biskup near Prague. We were actually treated and housed very decently there. But after six months, orders arrived from the government to send us to the Modrany camp, and from there to the infamous concentration camp Lesany, known as "the Green Hell", where we were exploited as camp laborers for 9 months. Families were torn apart, and anyone who was unable to work almost starved to death. Fleeing from the Russians, many Silesians passed through parts of the Sudeten region on their way to West Germany. 15,000 of them were separated from their treks, brought here and robbed of their last few possessions, and then left to perish from starvation-related typhus. The huge camp cemetery with its thousand crosses speaks volumes. In spring 1947 we were sold to the farmers as work slaves, the price was some bacon and butter. A government decree stipulated that all Germans had to work from 5 o'clock in the morning until 10 p.m., for regular prison rations. We were sent to the farmer Jirsa in Pelec, District Kamenice. We had to work 16 hours a day under constant guard, as did my school-aged children. Black coffee and dry bread was all we got. In the winter we had to chop wood in the forest while the children stripped feathers. They were not allowed to go to school.

In May 1945, 7 members of the Wehrmacht had been nailed to the farmer's gate and tortured to death. His neighbors testified to it. Two Silesian girls, sisters aged 18 and 20, were left to the Russians' tender mercies every day after they returned from their field work. After 11 months of heavy labor I managed to be transferred to a brickworks, where we were treated quite a bit better. In autumn 1948 we were brought back to Lesany, where we were robbed of our hard-earned bit of cash and then expelled to Saxony." (9) The above quote and graphic from Documents on the Expulsion of the Sudeten Germans.

Also in 1945, in Schnlind, 83.3 miles WNW of Prague, ANTON LORENZ was amongst the ten innocent people who were cruelly killed by Czechs after the surrender of the German military according to a Reinhold Erlbeck e-mail of 15 March 2007. (10) The following inscription is from the daughter of one of these ten murdered civilians: "Liebe ist starker als Hass," (Love is stronger than Hate).

Kohling, Schindelwald, Schnlind: Maltreatment, Executions - Reported by: Karl Sandner. Report of December 5, 1945.

"In Kohling and Schindelwald, two towns in Neudek District of the Sudetengau, ten men were shot after the unconditional surrender of the German Reich. These men were arrested by the Czechs, and maltreated. They were beaten bloody. In one case, a picture of Hitler had been found in a closet when the man in question was arrested, and the Czechs forced him to eat it [the photo]. The ten men were arrested on a Monday (I no longer recall the exact date) in Schnlind, Neudek District, [83.3 miles WNW of Prague] and were to be taken to Neudek on Tuesday. In the truck, which was manned all round by Czechs, they had to lie on their stomachs so that the townspeople wouldn't see how they were being maltreated. On the way to Neudek, a Czech motorcyclist came towards us and issued different orders. They drove back to Schnlind [83.3 miles WNW of Prague] again, and that same evening they had to dig their own graves. Wednesday morning, around 5 or 6 o'clock, they were shot after all. Their kin were forbidden to visit the grave, and were chased away by the Czechs standing guard there." (11) The above quote and graphic from Documents on the Expulsion of the Sudeten Germans.

She was born at 2100 hours on 12 Feb 1831 in Schnlind # 43, (Krsn Lpa) Austria (Czech Republic) and was babtized on 13 Feb 1831. WILHELMINE is the daughter of IGNAZ SCHUERER, shoemaker master in Schoenlin # 40 and ANNA THERESIA nee ERHART from Schnlind # 43. IGNATZ SCHUERER was the legitimate son of ANDREAS SCHUERER (dead), house owner and MARIA ANNA ROEDIG (dead), miller's daughter from Hermesgruen # 2, and ERHARD, ANNA THERESIA, born in Schnlind # 43, was the legitimate daughter of JOSEPH ERHARD (dead), house owner, and MARIA ANNA nee PLEYER (dead) from Kohling # 27.

"The SS Elbe was an iron-hulled steamship built by John Elder & Co, Glasgow, for Norddeutscher Lloyd, and launched on April 2, 1881. The ship was 432 ft in length, 45 ft in breath and had a gross weight of 4,510 tons. She had a straight bow, two funnels, and four masts. Powered by double-expansion engines, the single screw propelled the steamer at a service speed of 16 knots. The Elbe was Norddeutscher Lloyd's first express steamer, and it could sail from England to New York in just over 8 days. However, she proved to be uneconomical because of her high consumption of coal and her small cargo capacity. She had accommodations for 179 passengers in 1st class, 142 in 2nd class, and 796 in steerage and was the line's first vessel with first class amidships instead of aft." (14)

"Her maiden voyage was June 26, 1881 from Bremen to Southampton and New York. In 1883, she was outfitted with electric lights. . . The Elbe made many more trips over the next 10 years, including three voyages to Australia, but on January 30, 1895, she collided with the British coal collier "Craithie" about 30 miles west of Ijmuiden, Netherlands. Within 20 minutes, she sank to the bottom taking 332 of the 352 passengers on board with her.

The certificate of death for LOUISA "LIZZIE" BENNER LORENZ lists AUGUST BENNER and HELENE ADLE as parents both born in Germany. The below HEINRICH (HENRY) BENNER family in the 1860 New Braunfels, Comal Co. and 1870 Lockhart, Caldwell Co. Texas census has AUGUST BENNER age sixteen in 1870. A book compiled by BENNER descendants lists the birth of LOUISA BENNER, daughter of HEINRICH (HENRY) BENNER, as 26 June 1864 Hortontown, TX. This LOUISA BENNER married Dr. ALBERT JOHNSON and is buried in Fredericksburg, TX. The LOUISA BENNER born 18 May 1870, therefore, is not the daughter of HEINRICH (HENRY) BENNER living in the 1860 New Braunfels, Comal Co. and 1870 Lockhart, Caldwell Co. Texas census. The possibility does exist that she is the offspring of his son AUGUST BENNER.

The most likely candidate, however, for the father of LOUISA "LIZZIE" BENNER born 18 May 1870 is the AUGUST BENNER in the 1860 Bexar Co. TX census age fourteen and twenty-four years old in the 1870 Kendall Co. TX census. This AUGUST BENNER married CAROLINE ERTEL (EREL, ESTEL) in Kendall Co. TX. AUGUST and CAROLINE or HELENE, as stated in the above certificate of death, were born in Germany. Census images for both AUGUST BENNER'S are available below.

ROBERT (RUPERT) & LOUISA (LIZZIE) BENNER married on 2 Nov 1890 and had six children in the York Creek and Kingsbury area of Guadalupe Co. Texas:

ANNIE LORENZ born 17 June 1907 in Guadalupe Co. TX married ALBERT W. SEITER in the 1920's. CAROLINE LORENZ married JOHN C. STEFFENS. All my immediate LORENZ ancestors came from Guadalupe Co. TX and some LORENZ relatives are buried at Kingsbury Cemetery, in Kingsbury, Guadalupe Co. TX. Through census records, I have uncovered a LORENZ in Guadalupe Co. TX in 1880. No first name was given for this LORENZ, but it proves a LORENZ was in Guadalupe Co. TX in 1880. In 1870, there are a lot of LORENZ'S in Bastrop Co. TX, which is one, county over: Guadalupe, Caldwell, Bastrop. The below census record may be that of one of my LORENZ ancestors. Or it may be totally unrelated.
