** Transcriber's Notes **
Please Note: The "name" sections in the first part of this list and
again at the very end, are hard to read. These areas look as though they had
been soaked with water; caution is advised - much of the ink has faded
considerably. The ages of the children were unreadable except for those
mentioned in the notes below; no information had been given in original
census for the nativity columns of the children.
Columns above represent name, relation, color, gender, birth month, birth
year, age, marital status, years married, number of children, number of
living children, birth place, father's birth place, mother's birth place,
occupation, months unemployed, can read, can write, can speak English, home
owned or rented, home owned free or mortgaged, home or farm.
Columns omitted are year of immigration, years in United States,
natualization, number of farm schedule (all were left blank in the original
census). Ages for foundlings are unreadable unless otherwise stated in the
notes below.
Transcriber used the abbreviations Cal for California, Ill for Illinois, Can
Eng for Canada (Eng), Ark for Arkansas, Miss for Missouri, Nev for Nevada,
Ore for Oregon, N Jer for New Jersey, Ken for Kentucky, N York for New York,
N Hamp for New Hampshire, Eng for England, Virg for Virginia.
Address of Orphanage: 913 Golden Gate Avenue
This census was taken June 1, 1900 by Shirley C. Walker, Enumerator.
1 Unable to read surname or relation. Surname might be something like
Peuser, Pender, Penser.
2 Unable to read surname; might begin with "E" and end with "ut" or "nt",
but can't say for certain.
3 Unable to read surname; might be something like Beckert, "Be????t",
"Becke?t" ....
4 Unable to read surname or months unemployed. Surname seems to start with
a "C" and end with "r", "s", but can't say for certain. Given name is
also hard to read; looks like "Miend"/"Mieud" or "Miencl", as written;
might be Maud.
5 Unable to read surname; might be something like Hiell.
6 Unable to read surname; surname seems to begin with "D" end with "..sey";
might be Dempsey but can't say for certain.
7 Unable to read surname clearly; surname seems to begin with "C" and end
with either "..roy" or "..soy"; might be Conroy but can't say for
certain. Middle letter looks like either "u" or "n".
8 Surname might be Smith.
9 Surname might be Anderson.
10 Unable to read surname; seems to begin with "G", perhaps "Gir.."
11 Unable to read surname. Surname seems to begin with "M" and end with
"w"; might be something like Mayhew, Malysew, Mulgrew, but can't say for
certain. Also, the tail of the "g" or "y" is in the same position as a
"t" or "d" on the line below - hard to say where the two names begin and
end with respect to each other. There does seem to be a letter with a
tail in this surname but there may not be.
12 Surname might be something like Santy, Sandy, Ganty, but can't say for
certain. The "t", "d" (if either are really there) is in the same
position as the tail from the "y" or "g" on the line above; as such, it
is hard to determine whether there is a tall letter in this position,
or not - it looks like there is, but there may not be. First letter
might also be "L"; the Enumerator's "L" letters on occasion, are
identical to "S".
13 Unable to read surname clearly; might be Hicks, Ricks, but can't say for
certain; looks like "Kickr" at first glance but upon closer inspection
the first letter looks more like "H", possibly "R".
14 Surname is very hard to read; looks like "Coaklus", "Coablus", "Cooklus"
"Coaklin", "Cooklin" ..., as written/with what is visible. Surname
looks like it starts with a "C", has two tall letters in it (e.g., l, d,
or b, etc), and ends with possibly, "en", "us", "in", perhaps "ure", or
something of this nature depending on how it is viewed.
15 Unable to read surname; might be a "k" or "h", possibly an "l" near the
middle.
16 Unable to read surname, occupation, months unemployed, literacy. Given
name is hard to read.
17 Unable to read surname, occupation, months unemployed, literacy. Given
name is hard to read; might be Suellen, Luellen but it looks like there
is/should be an additional letter or two in the first half of it. Second
half of given name looks like either "..ellen" or "..ellyn"
18 Unable to read surname, occupation, months unemployed, literacy. Given
name is hard to read.
19 Unable to read name, birth places, occupation, months unemployed,
literacy. Given name might be Abbie; very hard to read.
20 Unable to read name, years married, number of children, number of living
children, birth place, occupation, month unemployed, literacy. First
name might be Louisa: the first letter seems to look like "S" but the
remaining letters suggest "Louisa"/"Louise" ... very difficult to read.
26 Might be Wintlosop, Wentlosop; letters are small and somwhat crowded -
hard to read
27 Might be Trenchood, Treuchord; looks like Trenchaad, Treuchaad, as written.
29 Age for this person is given in the original census as "10/12" (i.e., 10
months.
30 Might be Jares, possibly Jasec ....
34 Unable to read birth month.
39 Given name is hard to read.
40 Unable to read first name; might be Annie.
41 Given name is hard to read; looks like "?ido", "Vido", "?ids". Age
given as "5/12" (i.e., 5 months).
