** Transcriber's Notes **
Columns above represent name, relation, color, gender, birth month, birth
year, age, marital status, birth place, father's birth place, mother's birth
place, year of immigration, years in United States, occupation, months
unemployed, can read, can write, can speak English, home owned or rented,
home or farm.
Columns omitted are years married, number of children, number of living
children, naturalization, home owned free or mortgaged, number of farm schedule,
as all entries were left blank in original census.
Transcriber used the abbreviations Virg for Virginia, Un for Unknown, Wisc
for Wisconsin, Mary for Maryland, y for yes and n for no.
Address of Orphanage: 21 Centre Street.
This census was taken June 8, 1900 by Samuel W. Boardman, Jr., Enumerator.
4 Notation 1/2 is inserted in this column
8 Area in original census containing fourth and fifth letters of this
surname is not clear - Enumerator may have made an attempt to make a
correction. Might be Meiglan, Meigan ....
10 Might be Gaffza
11 Might be Beveredge
15 Surname is hard to read due to overwriting; the second letter ("e")
does not begin in same manner as "e" letters in same position made
by this Enumerator in other cases. As a result there could be an
additional letter between first and second letters given for this
transcription. As written in the original census, however, this
surname looks like Mecharr, Mechan, Mcsharr, Mcshan, Meshon, Meshan,
possibly Mcchase.... (no doubt, other possibilities exist as well).
16 Hard to read; looks like Mulligan
24 Birth place for this person given above as on original document.
Entries for "can read", "can write" for this person in original document
given as "OK" straddling both spaces.
27 First letter almost resembles "E"; remaining letters look like
"onnors".... Birth place of mother (Ireland) appears to be preceded with
"at sea", in original census; hard to read.
