Blairgowrie
Ship: 1550 tons
Captain: Darke

Surgeon Superintendent: Dr Husband
Sailed London May 29th 1875 - arrived Lyttleton August 22nd  1875

The first voyage made by this beautiful clipper ship, after being launched at Glasgow in 1875, was to Lyttleton where she landed 430 Government and fourteen saloon passengers. She sailed from London on March 26th and took her final departure from Start Point three days later. Light and contrary winds prevailed until crossing the equator, and two heavy gales were encountered after passing the Cape. On August 17th Stewart Island was in sight.Immediately after, a heavy N E gale was experienced, and then light winds right up to the Peninsula. Notwithstanding these adverse conditions, the ship anchored off Lyttleton on the 24th August, seven days after sighting land, and accomplished the passage in 83 days from Start Point. The Blairgowrie was a vessel of 1550 tons, commanded by Captain Darke. She was built by Thomson of Glasgow and owned by Thomson and Gray. The vessel made one voyage only to New Zealand.

COX family:
The Cox family came out on the Blairgowrie in 1875 . Their daughter,  Sarah Ann, 7 years old, always talked about how lovely and yellow the hills were when they arrived in Lyttleton. Sarah later went on to marry George Hurleyborn of County Cork, Ireland. Together they had eleven children. One of their three sons, Fredrick  John my father-in-law, married Florence Edith Chaplin. They settled in North Canterbury, and became sheep and crop farmers. They had  7 children, Roselie, Eleanor, Melva, Ken, Gwen, Jan,and Colin my husband. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Lesley Hurley

SHAW family:
The Shaw family, listed in this shipping list are my ancestors. William and Rachel Shaw are my Great Great Grandparents. Louisa Shaw is my Great Grandmother. Any information regarding this family, would be kindly received. If you have a connection with this family or would like to know more please contact Michele Cook.

COSTELLOE family:
Catherine (Kate) Costelloe is my Great Great Grandmother - born approximately 1856?.   She came to NZ as a domestic servant on the Blairgowrie with her sister Bridget ( the records we have say she was 18 yrs old when she came to NZ although the shipping list says 23).  We also have information that suggests Catherine is related to Eamon De Valera (who founded Fianna Fil in 1926 - Ireland's largest political party and was Prime Minister serving several seperate terms.) - Possibly a first cousin? Catherine married Thomas Patrick Murphy (Blacksmith) in Kaiapoi in 1878 and they had 10 children, 7 girls (one of them did not survive - whose name was also Winifred) - Kate, Annie, Flo, Nora, Eddie and Winifred (my Great Grandmother) and 3 boys - John, Tom and Patrick. Catherine is believed to have died in 1911 in Petone - although this is still unconfirmed.   Patrick died in 1929 and is buried in a paupers grave in Ashburton. If anyone has any further information on Catherine, her sister Bridget or Patrick Murphy, please email Chrissy Scott.
