Built at Sunderland by Pile in 1867, the Carnatic was a fine clipper of  Chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Co. she made three voyages to New Zealand, none of which were noteworthy. At the same time, however, neither were they excessive in terms of time at sea. She was a comfortable sailer. Following her final voyage to New Zealand, Carnatic remained at anchor in Auckland Harbour for six months as very little in the way of return cargo was available. On her return to London, Carnatic sailed to San Francisco.

FLINT family:
Robert and Agnes arrived in Wellington on board the Carnatic in early 1875. Robert, born August 16th 1851 was the son of John and Marion Flint and Agnes (nee Clark), born July 21st 1855 was the daughter of Captain Andrew Yule Clark. They were married in Patrick, Lanark, Scotland on October 30th 1873. After settling in Wellington they had a family of 7 daughters and 1 son: Ellender Allison (died at 4 months), Marion Keith (1879 to 1959 married Lamb), Ellen Robinson (1882 to 1939 married North), Robert (1894 to 1961), Agnes Euphemia (1896 to 1971 married Munn), Jessie Myrtle (1889 to 1958 married Bowe), Ada Clark (1891 to 1984 married Lindsay) and Margaret Rowan (1894 to 1966 maried Bedingfield). CHANDLER family:
George Chandler (1844-1923) and Lydia Chandler (nee Geeves) (1844-1926) left their home in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, England in 1874 to travel to New Zealand with their 4 children, William, Alice, Samuel and Edith.  They settled in Marlborough where they went on to have two more sons, John James and Edward and two more daughters, Emma and Caroline.  If anyone would like more information on this family please see my website http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~lomas or email me on [email protected]
