Hudson

Hudson
Barque: 700 tons
Captain: Colville
Surgeon Superintendent: J G Thornley
Departed Plymouth 21st November 1878 - Arrived Wellington 14th March 1879

The Hudson, an iron barque of 700 tons, made thirteen voyages to New Zealand. She was built in 1869 and belonged to the Shaw, Savill Line. The Hudson made good average passages and sailed to several New Zealand ports during her career. Itr was claimed at one time that she made the quickest New Zealand passage when sailing to Napier in 1875 with 204 immigrants - 84 days land-to-land. On this occasion she also landed 350 birds including Robins, Goldfinches and Chaffinches, Partridges and Larks. During one voyage (1897) she lost her Captain, Gasson, when he inexplicably jumped overboard. All efforts were made to rescue him but to no avail. Hudson was sold to France and it was under the French flag that she made her last trip to New Zealand.
