The Wave Queen, a fine comfortable
vessel of 853 tons, was one of the first vessels chartered by the Shaw Savill Company to
bring immigrants to New Zealand. With the exception of one voyage she had an uneventful
career, and sailed the seas for over 30 years, during which time she landed several
thousand passengers at New Zealand ports. She never made any sensational runs, but her
average was above that of many of the ships sent out to New Zealand in the sixties and
seventies. The Wave Queen made her last voyage to Lyttelton in 1891, and during the month
of September the following year she was run into by a steamer and sunk off Dublin while on
her way from London to Glasgow, where she was to load for another voyage to Otago and
Wellington.
