Notes for LILLIE LOUISE BAUMAN:

Bowman is a name that is quite literal; it's the English Occupational name for the archer, from Old English boga = bow + mann = man, although occasionally it is an Anglicized form of the German and Dutch surname Baumann -- consult your heritage for the correct version. Variants of Bowman are Boman, and Beauman . The cognate form in Dutch and Flemish is Boogman.

At the end of the Thirty Years' War, Germany was in a state of turmoil and confusion as she had often been before and has been since. Much of her land lay in waste, and her economy lacked stability. Sons who had fought were dead or permanently disabled. The victor gloated over his success, and the vanquished sulked over his lot. Harsh princes with power exploited the resources of the weaker and passed tyrannical decrees. Weaker princes, in spite of their own opinions, were compelled to concur with the stronger. This was not only true in matters of economy and government, but also in the matter of religion which was dependent upon the personal views of the head of the state.

That part of Germany known as the Palatinate fared no better than other areas and, indeed worse than some. A rural district, its inhabitants were unable to bear the burdensome taxes imposed on those who were already made destitute. Large numbers of them, having united with one or another of the pietistic or evangelical sects, were experiencing religious persecution with the ardency of the newly converted refused to comply with the orders of the prince. This resulted in a mass flight to another country where they would be able to find greater governmental leniency. With its near proximity, Switzerland offered such a haven, and countless Germans fled there. Many others went to Holland.

One such Palatinate family was the Baumann family. Although many of its members went to Switzerland, a great number of them sought refuge in Holland. Once removed from their native land, they were not reluctant to think of leaving Europe when the news reached them that William Penn's American colony was a virtual paradise. As early as 1707, two brothers, John and Wendell Baumann, immigrated to Pennsylvania from Switzerland. Others of the family were not long in following, and the next seventy years witnessed the transplantation of a large segment of the family to America.
