Dale Dean Simpson with Grandson Dale was the
eldest
of five children of Stella Mae Smith
and William Clark Simspon.
He served his country in the U.S. Army in the Korean War. Dale
married Marion Louise Phipps
and had five children. Dale retired from Lockheed Aircraft in
about 1986/87. At the time of is passing, Dale and Marion had
fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Dale
passed quietly at home after a year-long battle with throat
cancer. He vowed upon his diagnosis that he would gladly lose his
vocal chords if it meant spending another day with his kids. He
is in memory, as in life, a hero. He quoted Marion, after her
passing, as saying, "The kids don't need me; I need the kids."
"She was right," he said. They are both buried in Boatman
Cemetery.

AMERICA SPEARS America Spears was a strong woman who lived in an extraordinary time in history. As a Cherokee woman, she lived in a time when being an Indian wasn't popular in society. It was common during the 1800's for an Indian family to assign their children "white" names, often times they would take the name of a prominent man in their community. America was widowed at the young age of 39, left to raise 8 of the 9 children she and husband James Granville Craig had together. The eldest daughter was married to Thomas Fielder Weldon at the time (see photo below). Washington County Arkansas was the end of the trail for many Cherokees that had been removed from their beloved land in the eastern areas of the country. There were several removals that took place, ending in in northwestern Arkansas. Her husband left his home in Red Clay, Tennessee during the removals at the tender age of 14, the eldest of 5 newly orphaned children. Their descendents are still trying to locate records regarding America's origins. After the death of her husband James G. Craig, America was to marry 3 more times. She married James Phipps (her son-in-law's father), Cyris Card, and James Rose. America Rose is buried in Maud, Oklahoma, where she spent her last years with her youngest daughter Nancy (Craig) and Richard Null. |
