Bill &
Stella
knew what it was to live during touch times, raising their children
during the worst of the Great Depression. They were a happy
family despite the times, and the children didn't suffer for being
poor. While living in King City, Missouri, the elder boys were
very fond of walking through a wooded area along the path that lead to
their Grandad Simpson's house. He lived in a house beside a
little river and is remembered as always wearing overalls. "He
carried rocks in his pockets. And he was a dead shot with
them. He could throw a rock at a rabbit and kill it," according
to his grandson Dale. This was fortunate because meat was not a
common dish at the dinner table.
Like many families during that period, the
Simpson household was hit by
one of the worst crippling diseases of the time, polio. It would
take the life of their first daughter Betty Jean and affect the speach
of their youngest son Jim. Dale was lucky to come out of it
unharmed. Betty is buried in Union Star Cemetery in Gentry
County, Missouri.
Living in the early 1900's meant that most families didn't yet have
cars for transportation. Bill and Stella were clever enough to
ice skate along the river near their home in the winter time.
Bill was an amateur jockey and enjoyed playing baseball as a young
father. He was quite good.
Families stuck together back then. Stella's mother was killed in
an auto accident while driving with most of her children from Maysville
to Stanbury, the county seat, to enroll as a Cherokee Indian. She
was holding her
youngest son Dayton on her lap when the car was struck and she was
thrown from the car. Sadie Bowman Smith suffered a broken neck,
leaving her husband to finish raising their younger children.
Stella's brother "Junior" retold how he and Dayton and Buck sometimes
lived with Bill and Stella. Even when times were the toughest,
they were always provided plenty to eat. In his later years,
Junior enjoyed his great neice visiting in Esparto, California and
making her grandmother Stella's famous egg noodles. He said the
taste of those noodles took him back in time.
Theirs was a love story that didn't end until death came to part
them. Bill had to say goodbye to his lifelong partner in 1980
after a long battle with ovarian cancer. He buried Stella near
the Bryan's Chapel church in Boatman Cemetery, and had a headstone
placed there with both their names. He left this world quietly in
his sleep in September of 1993 to join Stella. They are together
again, side-by-side, just left of the gate near the church.
