Notes from Barbara Stewart:

Alonzo Stewart was born in Illinois in 1823. the son of Ebenezer Stewart He was married three times. First he married Margaret Henson. There were no children from this marriage. His second wife Lucinda Butler was the mother of Lowery Stewart, Daniel Augustus Stewart, and Margaret A. Stewart. She died  sometime between 1870 and 1872 in Illinois. Alonzo then married Sarah Butler, in 1872,  Lucinda‘s younger sister, who was living with the Stewart family at the time of the 1860 Census of Gallatin Co. Illinois. Alonzo and Sarah had one child, Molly, born 1875, in Illinois, (near Shawnee Town, Gallitan Co.) before moving to Northwest Arkansas, to Washington Co. They had several more children, born in Arkansas. They may have came to Arkansas with a lure of cheap land. The Phipps family line married into the Stewart line and among their descendents, there were several other Stewart-Phipps marriages.

Alonzo was at least 60 yrs old when his last child was born. “Lonzo” as he was nicknamed, and Sarah both died in 1888. They contracted a disease, thought to be tuberculosis, at that time was called Consumption. The oral history of the demise of this family says that a nephew of Sarah Butler Stewart came to Arkansas, from Illinois to visit. He became ill, and passed along the illness to the Stewart household.

There is some detail history of the Phipps Family in the Washington County Arkansas History Book. In this article about the Phipps, is included the summary on the Stewart family and their close relationship with the Phipps family

Alonzo was buried beside his third wife Sarah in White Oak Cemetery, in Washington County, Arkansas.as were many members of the Stewart Family.
