Alexandre Noiret dit Picard

Alexandre Noiret dit Picard

Added February 4, 2004

I first encountered Alexandre Noiret dit Picard in the Programme de recherche en démographie historique (PRDH) Pioneer files. PRDH has standardized the Noiret name to LeNoir. There are several LeNoir families in Quebec, but Alexandre is not connected with them. It is unclear why PRDH uses the LeNoir surname when documents in existence clearly show that Alexandre used the Noiret name. Although Alexandre arrived in New France after the cut-off date in Rene Jette's Dictionnaire généalogique des familles du Québec : des origines à 1730 (Jetté), his wife Jeanne Quenneville was found there. Some marriage information cames from the Institut généalogique Drouin's Répertoire alphabétique des mariages des Canadiens français, 1760-1935 (Blue Drouin); Répertoire alphabétique des mariages des Canadiens français, 1760-1935 : ordre féminin (Blue Drouin - feminin); and Dictionnaire national des Canadiens français, 1608-1760 (Red Drouin) as posted by Best Bill of the Quebec-Research-L mailing list.

However, the majority of information on this family comes directly from descendents who shortly after the 2004 New Year suddenly realized that each was related to the other. About 4 seperate lines in my database became a part of Alexandre's family. Now they have been busily researching as a team for census, marriage, baptism, and burial records in Quebec, Ontario, New York, and Michigan. Although each person is not specifially named below, my database contains a record of these sources. "LINEAGE CONTINUES" is used to indentify that the line continues in my database.

Alexandre is one of three immigrant Alexandre Picards who married in the 1750's in the province of Quebec. The other two are Pierre Alexandre Picard and Louis Alexandre Picard.

I do have a copy of the discharge from the French Marines of Alexandre Noiret dit Picard on Oct 8, 1756. It lists his name as Alexandre Noiret dit Picard. He is the first one of this line in Canada. Then next month, Nov 7, 1756, he married Marie Jeanne Quenneville, widow of Jean Jardon in Montreal. He was stationed in Montreal, but his discharge was just recently found in Michigan. Researchers there are trying to find out if he was station there also (in Monroe, Michigan). ... it is very clearly Noiret dit Picard--not LeNoir.
He was discharged Oct 7th, 1756 from the French Marines. The discharge says he is a "natif de Tenel" en al Province "de Picardy", jurisdiction de "Quiz"?(I cannot read it well), age de "vingt fin" ans.

Notes for Josephte Noiret dit Picard:

Source Family Contact:
Josephte Noiret dit Picard was, I believe, the oldest child. Four of her brothers and sisters (at least) followed her into the South Plantangent, Prescott County area, of Ontario. This area was not developed, and many places went by the names of the Rivers that passed by the farms.
So many of us were lost on this "Picard" name, that when we found, with the help of researches in Hawksberry, Prescott, Ontario the connection with Noiret and Picard, it was a real blessing. The key was that even though the Census of 1851 in South Plantagent, Ontario listed Georges Vezina (Visinaw), and his sons Serphin (Vezina (Visinaw) they listed his wife as Josette Picard. However, we later learned that the record said Josette Picard(?). We did not know what this question mark meant. Then they found the marriage record and realized that her name was Noirette (Noiray) dit Picard. This opened up research for others who were Noirest or Noirettes, not Picard, and the family began to unfold.
I do not know when or where she died. I know the family story, that when she did die, a local Catholic priest had written a testimony that she had no other children. This of course was not true, but Seraphin, her son, was living in the United States, and was distinherited from a farm etc. that should have been his. This was a conflict for quite some time. I do not know for sure the date or place of Georges Vezina's death either. I looked for both of them at St. Isidore in Prescott, Ontario, but without any luck. We had concluded that Josette (Josephte) must have remarried, but did not know for sure.

Notes for Seraphin Vezina:
Source Family Contact:
Seraphin Vezina and Marie Lucina Hermine Parent (called Armena) had 11 children, all in St. Isidore de Prescott, South Plantagenet, Prescott County, Ontario. About 1879, they moved to Cheboygan, Michigan with thier entire family.
My mother had known stories of Georges Vezina, since his son, her grandfather, Seraphin Vezina, had lived with various children and grandchildren (He died in his ninties). He stayed with my parents after their marriage in Auburn, Michigan. Seraphin would say in broken English "I be the only son, but have 11 children". After the death of his wife, Armena (Marie Lucia Heremine Parent), he was quite lost. He lived for over 30 more years as a widower, with his children in Afton, Michigan, and other places, looking after him. I have pictures of both of them. He had a ready smile, and his wife was considered quite brilliant (of course she is descendent is the descendent of Louis Hebert, Guillaume Couillard etc), and is of the oldest family of Canada.
