Surnames in CAPITALS indicate my husband's lineage.

Here is another line of Picards that I know about that came from France in the 1600's to New France. Some of the stories and information came from Jim Carten of the Acadian-Cajun mailing list. Additional stories have come from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online. When I went through my database using Rene Jette's Dictionnaire généalogique des familles du Québec : des origines à 1730 (Jetté), this family greatly expanded. Additional information has also come from Father Eloi Gerard Talbot's Généalogie des familles originigaires des comtés de Montmagny, L'Islet, Bellechase (Talbot); and the on-line l'Abbe Cyprien Tanguay's Dictionnaire généalogique des familles canadiennes depuis la fondation de la colonie jusqu'à nos jours (Tanguay). More details from Tanguay, as well as from Programme de recherche en démographie historique (PRDH) occur where individuals of the Pierre Picard family overlap with individuals of the Philippe Destroismaisons family.

Limited marriage infomation has come from the Institut généalogique Drouin's Répertoire alphabétique des mariages des Canadiens français, 1760-1935 (Blue Drouin); Répertoire alphabétique des mariages des Canadiens français, 1760-1935 : ordre féminin (Blue Drouin - feminin); and Dictionnaire national des Canadiens français, 1608-1760 (Red Drouin) as posted by Best Bill and others to the [email protected] mailing list. Where some spouses have Acadian connections, Stephen White's Dictionnaire généalogique des familles Acadiennes : Première Partie 1636 à 1714 (SWhite) was used. Additional information has been added by references cited by members of the [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected], as well as from contacts with members of this family.

Check out the (my NOTE: NOT UPDATED YET!) 8 generation outline.

"... Hazeur had also retained important interests in the fur trade. On 22 Oct 1693, he formed an association with La Chesnaye, Charles Macard, Jean Le Picard, Francois Viennay Pachot, and Jean Gobin, which acquired the lease of the Tadouassc trade from a Paris bourgeois named Jean Francois Chalmette. In 1700, the ownership of the Tadoussac domain passed to the newly formed Compagnie de la Colonie of which Hazeur had become a shareholder." (my NOTE: was this Jean Picard? In addition to this Jean and Jean, husband of Anne Gauthier mentioned above, by 1693, there was also Jean Picard, husband of Marie Madeleine Sabourin, as well as the Jean Gabriel Picard, son of Hugues Picard. Of these, it is this Jean that is most commonly referred to as "LePicard". In addition, Jette's Dictionnaire identifies that Jean Picard was a 'marchand bourgeois'.)

Notes for Marie Caron:

Source Carten:
From "Morts Trgiques et Vilents", pg 87-88 (also noted in the Journal des Jesuits and in the Histoire du Canada by Ferland):
"In the beginning of Jun 1660, 8 turncoat Hurons, before going over to the Iroquois and to deny their faith canoed over to the Beaupre Coast with the intention of surprising one of the residents. They had been living at the fort on Ile d'Orleans. At. St. Anne, Marie was captured on Jun 4, 1660. The house she was living on was on land that still belongs to descendants of the Robert Caron family and is about 1 mile about the church of St. Anne du Petit Cap. Marie had been at home with the 4 children while the others were out working in the fields. The Hurons went ashore, sure that no one was spying on them. They pilaged the house and dragged Marie and the children down to the canoe. News of the capture spread quickly to Quebec and d'Argenson sent a troop of French and Algonquins to block their passage through Quebec. The Algonquins set up an ambush at Pt. Levy. The wary Hurons hid out during the day. The second evening, the Hurons went up river, hanging close to the cliffs of Pt. Levy. Tha Algonquins saw them, but let them approach. After they passed, the Algonquins fired a massive charge with their muzzleloaders and jumped into the water. On short notice, they mastered the Hurons. Two of the Hurons were killed and 2 or 3 injured. Unfortunately, Marie had raised her head upon hearing friendly voices and was hit in the head with a bullet. One of the children was killed also. Marie was transported to the hospital in Quebec, but died 3 or 4 days later. Of the remaining Hurons, the youngest (age 15) was released. 3 were burned in Quebec and 2 were burned in Trois Rivieres."

* Vol Vi page 69:
"Marie (daughter of Robert Caron) 1639-1660 married Jean Picard in 1656. She met a tragic death in early June of 1660, a victim of Hurom renegades in quest of plunder on the Beaupre coast. Masquerading as Iroquois, they carried off the young wife, he daughter Louise and three other children in her care. The thieves were overtaken and surprised by the Franch and some Algonquins at Pointe-Levis. Marie and one of her charges were killed in the skirmish which followed. Little Louise escapted the massacre and was entrusted to the care of her grandfather Pierre Picard. As for Jean Picard, he remarried twice and had several children from each of his last two wives."

On the same day, the fifth, a Canoe of 8 Iroquois, or rather Iroquoised Hurons, carried off picar's wife, with 4 Children, at the petit Cap. They were discovered on the same Day, at 10 o'clock at night, while they were passing point de Levi, by about 20 Montagnais or Algonquains, accompanied by 8 Frenchmen. "He first chose a military career, and was promoted in 1690 to the rank of half-pay lieutenant. The following year he quit the service, left Quebec togo to Montreal, and devoted his energies to the wine trade, which led him to travel in the pays d'en haut.
"Jean Baptiste d'Ailleboust is cheifly known through a curious ruling handed down with respect to him by Bishop Saint Vallier (La Croix) on 26 may 1719, which by refusing absolution censured his relations with his sevant, the daughter of Paul Haguenier. The penalty was imposed not only on the guilty couple but also on d'Ailleboust's wife and the concubine's father, who were expected to use their influence to bring to their senses the husband and the daughter respectively.
"On 19 April 1689, at Quebec, Jean Baptiste d'Ailleboust had married Anne LePicard, Vital Oriol's widow, who was buried on 20 Jul 1736 at Montreal. He had 16 children."

"AILLEBOUST DE LA MADELEINE, FRANCOIS JEAN DANIEL D', merchant voyageur; b 7 oct 1702 in Montreal (Que), son of Jean Baptiste d'Ailleboust Des Muceaux and Anne Le Picard; m 24 Nov 1732 Marie Charlotte Godefroy de Linctot in Montreal; d 23 July 1793 at Pointe aux Trembles, Montreal Island.
"Francois Jean Daniel d'Ailleboust de La Madeleine belonged to a section of the Canadian nobility that in the 18th century, without relinquishing its class privileges and sometimes even because of them, gained a living from the fur trade. He did not own property from which he could draw a substantial income, and his chances of becoming an officer, the most prestigious of careers, were slim because of limited number of commissions available. Thus he became a voyageur and then a merchant-voyageur. From 1731 to about 1754, by himself or in partnership he directed some ten trading trips to Michilimackinac (Mackinaw CIty, Mich) and Michipicoton (Michipicoten River, Ont), almost all financed by important Montreal merchant-outfitters such as Francois Foucher, Alexis Lemoine, dit Moniere, and Ignace Gamelin.
"La Madeleine was thus one of the agents who obtained the trade goods on credit, hired a crew for one or more canoes, and left each summer for the western posts. In these enterprises he was first in partnership, from 1731 to 1736 with two of his brothers, Nicolas Marie d'Ailelboust Des Muceaux and Jean Baptiste d'Ailleboust de La Boulasserie. Then from 1737 at least until 1742 he was associated with two other brothers, Pierre Joseph d'Ailleboust de Manthet and Ignace Rene d'Ailleboust de Perigny, and after that with Louis Gastineau de Sainte Marie, to whom Governor Charles de Beauharnois had granted the trading rights at the post at Michipicoton in 1747. Finally, in 1750 he and Manthet formed a new company with an initial capital of 12,500 livres; this company was dissolved four years later. In 1757 he signed more fur-trade contract, but he seems to have retired from the business shortly afterwards.
"His activities as a merchant-voyageur had not led him to give up hope of becoming an officer in the colonial regular troop. He was nearly 40, however, when he first had the chance to take up this career, in 1742 he was a cadet with the Michilimackinac garrison. At that time he already had three children, so that according to his superior officers, he was "forced to follow the fur trade to support them." Perhaps family obligations became too heavy for this would be officer, or perhaps he was afraid of being transferred to a garrison less convenient for his trading activites than Michilimackinac. In any case he never rose in the militay hierarchy.
"La Madeleine spent his later years at Pointe aux Trembles. In February 1759 he and his brother Manthet had bought a piece of property there on which was built a modest house of squared timbers (pieces sur pieces). Twelve years later he bought his brother's share and became sole owner."

"BARBEL, JACQUES, soldier, merchant, seigneur, clerk of court, secreatry to the intendant Michel Begon, seigneurial judge, and royal notary; b c. 1670 at Le Havre de Grace, in the diocese of Rouen, son of Charles Barbel and Catherine Provost; d at Quebec, where he was buried 30 Jul 1740 in the church of the Recollets.
"To give an exact account of Barbel's astonishing activity and his omnipresence in the region of Quebec from 1703 on, a whole book would have to be devoted to him, although it was some time before he began to be noticed. It is evident that he was very young when he arrived in the colony, since he had already turned up at Quebec on 17 Nov 1687, at the signing of the marriage contract between Francois Dumas and Marie de Montmainier. He was at he time a sergeant of the garrison. Then we lose sight of him until he reappears in 1698, when he married Louise Renee Toupin on 5 November at Beauport. Suddenly, in 1700, he became almost famous: on 20 April Louis XIV himself had granted him a commission as royal notary at Montreal. But what is more surprising still is that Barbel remained at Quebec, without availing himself of his appointment. In 1703, according to Francois Madeleine Fortune Ruette d'Auteuil, he was a "domestic" in the king's warehouses, although this expression should not be taken literally.
"The year 1703, ... On 27 January his wife was buried, leaving him with three children. The youngest, a few days old, passed away soon afterwards, probably struck down, like his mother, by the smallpox epidemic. Among the many victims was Alexandre Peuvret de Gaudarville, whose widow, Marie Anne Gaultier de Comporte, Barbel "seduced" and "made pregnant". Everyone cried scandal ... dragged Barbel before the courts, but the affair petered out... Shortly before this liason was known, ..., Barbel had been appointed seneschal judge of Lauson, 12 May 1703, and on 4 June royal notary at Quebec. Finally, quickly forgetting his fleeting love affair, Barbel married again on 26 November; his second wife was Marie Anne Le Picard.
(discussion of career as notary, legal practitioner, guardian, syndic or trustee, seneschal judge, judge bailiff, court clerks, secretary, deputy to king's attorney, merchant, seigneur, ship owner, etc)
"... Barbel's estate was moreover so encumbered that his heirs accepted it only without liability to debts beyond the assets descended. Barbel was survived by his third wife, Marie Madeleine Amiot, whom he had married 22 Oct 1719, and seven children, out of the 15 that he had had by his first two marriages."

Source Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online:
"BARBEL, Marie Anne (Fornel), merchant and entrepreneur; b. 26 Aug 1704 at Quebec, daughter of Jacques Barbel and Marie Anne Le Picard; m 31 Dec 1723 Louis Fornel; seven of thier 14 children survived infancy; d 16 Nov 1793 at Quebec.
"Marie Anne Barbel's father had risen swiftly from garrison sergeant of Quebec to officeholder, but he ended his life overwhelmed by debts. Barbel was an upstart, something not rare in the colony, and at the time of Marie Anne's marriage his career was in the ascendant. The Fornel family, into which she married, was more stable; in the marriage contract signed by the governor and the indentant, both her prospective husband and his father are designated merchants and bourgeois of Quebec. Her future brother-in-law, Joachim Fornel, was soon to be named a canon of the Quebec cathedral chapter.
"The life of Marie Anne Barbel is historical interest in part because of what it reveals of the role of women in the merchant class. Her business knowledge and her continuation in trade after her husband's death were typical. Although the business role of a wife under the custom of Paris is difficult to trace, Louis Fornel's delegation to Marie Anne on 15 May 1743 of full power of attorney over his affairs during his absence on the Labrador coast demonstrates that she was informed of his activities and considered capable of business decisions. Nevertheless, in the period of her marriage, the bearing and raising of children and the managing of her household would have been the focus of her life. This emphasis changed in 1745 when her husband died.
"The couple's "communit of property" was not dissolved after Louis Fornel's death, his rights devolving instead upon his heirs. Mme Fornel administered this property, carrying on the family business and extending it in size and in new directions. She continued to enjoy friendship and close business relations with Francois Havy and Jean LeFebvre, two Huguenot merchants who had been her husband's partners in several enterprises, including the Labrador sealing industry. She was unable to continue exploitation of their sealing station at Chateau Bay, which after the War of the Austrian Succession was granted to Jean Francois Gaultier, but she had more success with Baie des Esquimaux (Hamilton Inlet), a site Fornel had discovered in 1743 and renamed Baie Saint Louis. At the time of his death he had been petitioning for a monopoly of its trade. Intendant Hocquart planned instead to unite it with the Tadoussac trading posts (sometimes called the king's posts), so that it would not adversely affect their business; however, his successor, Bigot, granted the Baie Saint Louis monopoly to Mme Fornel on 20 Sep 1749. He noted that she would be developing it in company with Havy and Lefebvre, her share being only one-third. BIgot may have made the grant as part of a general strategy of thwarting his predecessor's clients, in this case the farmer of the Tadoussac trading posts, Francois Etienne Cugnet, for Cugnet's lease on them was not renewed. Instead they too were leased to Mme Fornel in 1749. "Widow Fornel has a company," Bigot explained to the minister of Marine, "and nothing whatever will be lacking at the post of Tadoussac and ... the king will be well paid each year." Circumstantial evidence suggests that Havy and Lefebvre were he active partners in this venture as well, although they remained in the background, perhaps because of Governor Jacques Pierre de Taffanel de La Jonquiere's abhorrence of Protestants.
"As her husband had done before her, Mme Fornel invested part of her profits in the relative security of real estate. The most original venture of her career was the establishment of a pottery to meet the demand arising from wartime shortages. As Havy and Lefebvre explained in a letter of 1746, "no earthenware is coming from France and it appears that as long as the war lasts it will be the same, but the country has a resource in Mademoiselle Fornel who has established its manufacture. She has a very good craftsman and her eaerth proves good." The pottery, finished with lead and copper glazes, was immediatley successful and was even taken for the French product. The shop remained in operation suntil at least 1752. In that year Francois Jacquet signed a three year contract with her which is revealing of the conditions of labour at the time: he was to be paid on a piece work basis, she would provide stove wood and lighting, and curiously, each was to hire a man and provide his food and wages. Jacquet worked in the "Briqueterie" a dilapidated building in the Lower Town.
"The war of the conquest hastened Marie Anne Fornel's withdrawal from the trade. Her north shore and Labrador posts were liabilities in wartime. She made no effort to renew lease on the Tadoussac trading posts which expired in 1755, and it is doubtfull whether she was still operating at Baie Saint Louis when her monopoly expired in 1761. Her numerous buildings in Quebec's Lower Town were destroyed in the bombardment of the city in 1759, and nothing more is heard of the pottery. In 1764 she and the Fornel heirs agreed to settle accounts with the Havy and Lefebvre Heirs by paying them the sum of 12,000 livres, the last payment being made in 1769. An inventory of the Fornels community property made the following year indicates a history of solid bourgeois comfort, but also considerable indebtedness resulting from wartime reversals. Between 1765 and 1771 Mme Fornel laboured to pay her debts, rebuild many of her houses, and consolidate her assets. In 1777 the Fornel property was divided among the heirs, and Mme Fornel entered into the last phase of her life, that of retirement, which lasted until her death in 1793."
