Holyrood mourns the loss of one of its most estimable old ladies in the person of Mrs. Maria O'Rourke. The deceased lady was born at Hr. Main 68 years ago, and was the daughter of the late Capt. John & Martha Kennedy. During her six week's illness, she was attended by Dr. Jones, who called to her aid all that practical experience and skillful treatment could suggest, but despite all she succumbed to the attacks of a chronic malady. Rev. Fr. Finn was in constant attendance of the sick woman and administered to her spiritual strength and comfort. Her funeral took place on last Monday from her late residence to the Church of Holy Cross where the funeral obsequies were performed by Rev. Fr. Finn, and thence to the Southside Cemetary where interment took place in the family plot. On Monday morning Solemn High Mass and office was sung for the repose of her soul. The celebrant was Rev. W.P. Finn, P.P.; Deacon, Rev. T. O'Neill, P.P., Conception; Sub-Deacon, Rev. R.M. Shean, P.P. Conception. The late lamented Mrs. O'Rourke was the mother of ten children - two sons and eight daughters, but five of her children predeceased her. Three are living in Springfield, Mass., one in Salmonier and one at home. Once Newfoundland's smartest scholar, the late gifted and gentle Gertrude, was her daughter, and Avondale's merchant prince, the late Edward Kennedy, her brother. Of a retiring but frank disposition, charitable and hospitable, Mrs. O'Rourke possessed the qualities of a good woman and a good Catholic, and her large funeral which was attended by numbers of her relatives from Hr. Main, Avondale and Holyrood attests to the respect in which she was held. To her bereaved husband and daughters, we offer our sincere sympathy, and our prayers for the repose of the soul of the late Maria O'Rourke. - Com." The railway was built with pick, shovel and wheelbarrow; rock cuts were drilled and blasted by hand through almost impassable terrain. Newfoundland's rivers and valleys run from north to south, and the east-west railway crosses them all. Grades are steeper than in the Rockies, and the sharpest curves appear on the steepest grades. Near St. Andrew's, the Bullet goes uphill and down at the same time, and around three curves at once. There's a bridge on the average every four miles, but not a single tunnel from coast to coast. In 1893 the railway was completed from Placentia Junction to Norris Arm and was known as the Halls Bay Railroad (Northern Division). In the fall of 1897, the railway was completed from Norris Arm to Grand Bay less than two miles from Port aux Basques and was known as the "Newfoundland Northern and Western Railway." In early June of 1898, the last rails were laid, and the final link was completed to Port aux Basques. Newfoundlanders have told me that the Railroad was built as cost plus, which means the company got paid for the length of rails they laid. So they didn't take the shortest route but the easiest and longest route. Some payment was made in land so the heirs of this company still own vast areas of land in Newfoundland. He lived in Newfoundland and used to visit his sister Marguerite O'Rourke and trelatives in the Sydney area. He had a problem with alcohol. iv. LAWRENCE O'ROURKE, b. He had previously built a breakwater on the other side of the road from the house and filled it in. Probably to stop corrosion from the brook and salt water. He went to Sydney and purchased a Model T type Ford car, probably the first one in Poulamon. It wasn't completely closed in from the weather, had curtains over the windowa which you had to close. First kept it in the barn. But his insurance agent said that wasn't a good idea, and he was right as I believe the barn eventually burnt down. So he built a garage across the road with the help of his son Richard who was home visiting from US. Richard was a building contractor. So the car was kept in the garage. Mother says that they used to hold the doors for him when he took it in or out and onetime when he was puttting it in the garage he ran it through the back wall. He later bought a Pontiac. >From The Record Files of 36 Years Ago" Arichat.
