There is some dispute as to the name of the wife of William Ball. W.W.
Hoskins in JOHN BALL OF LEE CO., VA at page 25 gives the name of William Ball's

VIRGINIA, at page 4 of the Additions, gives his wife as Charlotte (Lottie) May.
Charlotte is the wife in the 1850 Census. No marriage record has been found for
either marriage. This compiler believes that Charlotte May was the only wife of
William Ball of Whitley Co., KY.

16. George[5] Ball (Moses, 29) (A16). Born, 1752, in Fairfax Co., VA. Died,
24 Dec 1825, in Russell Co., VA. Occupation: farmer.

The George Ball Bible records that the marriage of George Ball and
Elizabeth Tunnell took place in England. That this was so seems highly
unlikely. A George Ball, with John Ball and Moses Ball, is in the 1788
Russell Co., VA Personal Property Tax List in the Lower District.

17. Elizabeth[5] Tunnell (A17). Born, 9 Oct 1756, in Stafford Co., VA.
Occupation: housewife.

This compiler is unaware of any record evidence for the parentage of
Elizabeth Tunnell. Very few Tunnells appear in the Stafford/Fairfax/Alexandria
area of Virginia.

B.S. Ball, in THE BALLS OF FAIRFAX AND STAFFORD IN VIRGINIA, at page 305,
repeats the romantic myth of Guillaum Tonnelier, a supposed French Protestant
who went to England and settled in the North Riding, Yorkshire. His son,
William, supposedly married a Lady Ann Howard of Yorkshire. This compiler has
found absolutely no record evidence to support this story. Unfortunately,
Guillaum Tonnelier, is listed as a Huguenot Ancestor by the Huguenot Society of
America. The reference given is Armstrong, NOTABLE SOUTHERN FAMILIES, v. 3, pp.
127-369.

I believe that there has been a misreading of the death record of
Arlantia Howard, wife of William Tunnell of Accomac Co., VA, MD and Dagsboro,
Delaware. They were married 13 January 1750 at St. Martin's Church, Worcester
Co., MD. He married 2d, 15 Nov 1763 to Comfort Burton, and 3rd, 6 Jun 1767 to
Elizabeth Evans (Texas DAR Roster, p. 2151). While they had a daughter
Elizabeth, Delaware records indicate that she married a Dirickson and stayed in
Delaware.

The Tunnell family of Accomac and Northampton Co.s, Virginia, was founded
by Thomas Tunnell, a Lt. in the service of Lord Baltimore. In the 1655 Maryland
Revolution, he was initially with the rebels, but was exonerated (Maryland Hall
of Records, Court and Testamentary Business, 1655, Liber B, No. 3, p. 138). In
a deposition of 1656, he stated that he was "aged 27" (Liber B, No. 3, p.
263-264). There is a typescript genealogy of this family in the Library of
Congress, John Miller Tunnell, THE GENEALOGY OF THE TUNNELL FAMILY OF DELAWARE.
In all probability, Elizabeth Tunnell descends from Thomas Tunnell.

One other possibility exists and that is that her name is actually
Gunnell and not Tunnell. There were numerous Gunnell families in the
Stafford/Fairfax Co., VA area in the early and middle 1700s. Again, no record
evidence has been found to support the Gunnell reading.

She married George Ball (16) (A16).

Occupation: farmer-polit.

According to Abraham's will, Daniel and his sisters were in Virginia in
1797. I have been unable to find mention of the Strunk name in Virginia. In
1800 Daniel Strunk is in Ashe Co., NC. The 1800 Census shows him as over 26,
wife under 26, and 2 boys and 1 girl under 10. In 1806, he was elected
Constable of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Ashe Co., NC (Fletcher,
Ashe Co: A History, p. 79 (1963). In the 1815 Ashe Co. Tax List he is shown as
owning 390 acres of land on the waters of Helton and Grassey Creek (Winslow,
"Ashe County 1815 Tax List", NC Genealogical Society Journal, vol. XII, p. 2,
at 12 (1986)). In 1820 he is in Whitley Co., KY along with a Peggy Strunk.

He married, first, Elvina Cox? (25) (A25), or Margaret ----- circa 1793 (?).
A Margaret Strunk was granted a divorce from Daniel Strunk in 1821 in Whitley Co.,
KY. She was allowed to keep property she had acquired in the previous 5 years.
This either indicates that the marriage was from ~1815 to 1821, or that they were
separated during that period. So far, no marriage record has been found.

John Barret, clk At a County Court held for Green County at the Courthouse in Greensburgh this 25th day of September, 1820. It is ordered to be certified to the Secretary of War, that it is the opinion of said court from creditable and disinterested testimony produced before them, that the total value of the property of Joshua Phipps in the schedule subscribed by him to which he made oath as required by an act of Congress is reasonably worth the sum of forty five dollars. In testimony of the foregoing being truly copied I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of office this 18th day of October, 1820 and 29th year of the Commonwealth. John Barret, clk DISTRICT OF KENTUCKY On this 14th day of May, 1819 before me, the subscriber, one of the Judges of the Green County Court for the said district, personally appeared Joshua Fips (alias Phipps) age 73 years, resident in Green County in the said district, who being by me first duly sworn, according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the provisions made by the late Act of Congress, entitled "An act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the Revolutionary War," That he, the said Joshua Fips (or Phipps), enlisted for the term of one year in March or April in the year of 1776 in Botetourt in the state of Virginia in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Bowyers of the regiment commanded by Colonel Mathews in the line of the state of Virginia on the Continental Establishment; that he continued to serve in the said corps, or in the service of The United States, until the full end of twelve months, when he was discharged from service in Bucks, Chester or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that he was in no particular battle while a soldier but after said discharge raised a volunteer company & served as a Lieutenant & was in the battle Guilford and that he is in reduced circumstances, and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support, and that he has no other evidence now in his power of his said services. relationship between the testator and the Gatewoods or Amey Baker.

The attribution of George Creekmore as the father of Edmund Creekmore of
Norfolk Co., VA, is based soley on the birth record entry in the IGI for
Norfolkshire, England. At this time this compiler has no other evidence to
prove the relationship. Further research in England is required to verify this
assumption.

                                TENTH GENERATION

85. Benois/Benjamin[10] Brasseur[60] (A528). Born, circa 1610 (?), in FR.
Died, circa 1663, in The Cliffs, Calvert Co., MD. Immigration: before 1653, in
Nansemond Co., VA. Occupation: farmer-justice.

Benois or Benoit Brassieur/Brassier came to Maryland from Virginia as is
shown from his Certificate of Denization from Cecil Lord Baltimore in 1662/3
(Maryland Hall of Records, Proceedings of the Provincial Council, L. HH, ff.
157-158). Unfortunately, Benois died shortly afterwards (1663) and he did not
leave a will. His wife did make a will prior to her marriage to Thomas Starling
and it is printed below. In Maryland, Benois Brasseur became Benjamin Brashears
and he was appointed a Justice of the Peace for Calvert Co.

Benois was probably related to the Brasseur family of Lower Norfolk and
Nansemond countiess, Virginia. A Bennet Brasseur is named as one of the persons
transported by Robert Brasseur in a patent of 1200 acres in "Nanzemond Co."
dated 12 April 1653 (Virginia Patent Book 3, p. 33 in Nugent, Cavaliers and
Pioneers, vol. 1, p. 244). At least 600 acres of this land escheated to the
Crown "by reason Rob. Braseur was an alien". At the time of the escheat, 19
November 1670, the 600 acres was in the possession of Rich. Staples, husband of
one of the daughters of Robert Brasseur to whom he willed the land
("Inquisitions on Escheated Lands", The Virginia Genealogist, vol. 20, p. 111).
The escheat of an additional 300 acres of the lands of Robert Brasseur is also
recorded ("Inquisitions on Escheated Lands", The Virginia Genealogist, vol. 20,
pp. 23-24). This land was granted, 7 June 1670, to "Mr. John Brasseur his
sonn".

Benois had a patent in Virginia for "300 acres at the head of Indian
Creek, a branch of the western branch of the Nansemond River", Virginia Patent
Book 3, p. 89, dated 12 April 1653, (Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1, p.
257). One of the persons claimed as a headright was Mary RICHFORD. This patent
was renewed 26 March 1656 (Virginia Patent Book 4, p. 26 (40) in Nugent,
Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1, p. 329). A Benors Brasheire was granted 100
acres in "Nancimond Co.", by an inquisition of 23 February 1662. This land was
granted to Charles Drury 23 September 1663 (Virginia Patent Book 5, p. 450
(543) in Nugent, Cavaliers and Pioneers, vol. 1, pp. 539-540).

The home of Benois Brasseuir, "Upper Bennett", was in existence in 1957
and was located at "The Cliffs" in Calvert Co., Maryland.

He married Mary Richford? (86) (A529), circa 1645, in VA. Children:

The surname of Mary Brasseur is believed to be Richford. This is based
solely on the importation of a Mary Richford by Benois Brasseur as mentioned
above.

After the death of Benois, Mary secured a deed to the land and the house
the family had from Richard Bennett (Maryland Archives, vol. 41, p. 178). She
also made a will at this time. The will was probated after she became the wife
of Thomas Starling.
