REVIVAL

When the Web first became graphical and accessible to everyone at reasonable cost, there was an instant surge of genealogical interest.  The infant RootsWeb and USGenWeb emerged, and listservs sprung up dealing with everything from surnames to historical periods of interest.  We witnessed the wonders of instant communication and collaboration on family lines.  We found long-lost cousins living all over the globe.  This was the atmosphere that surrounded the beginnings of "Self Portraits" and its sibling sites.  In the middle of the first decade of the 21st century, interest began to wane somewhat.  SPAM interfered with pleasure, and people changed e-mail addresses to escape its mounting burden on their inboxes.  Fear of identity theft led them away from listservs and onto "anonymous" sites such as forums and message boards and social networking sites, such as MySpace and FaceBook, where you could limit your contacts to certain "friends."  Others developed new interests, started families, moved away, and became inactive in genealogy for various reasons.  In the past year or so, however, we've seen a revival in genealogical interest.  Newer cousins are picking up the "torch" and digging into areas that have eluded  the long-time researchers.  And some of those older researchers have come back to their hobby.  The number of "lost" cousins suddenly turning up after years in "hiding" has now just about equaled the number of those writing to us for the first time.  Things look bright in the world of genealogy.  Perhaps that's a new beginning for all of us!

ROBERT SELF OF PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY, VIRGINIA:
FOUNDER OF MAJOR LINES IN GEORGIA AND MISSOURI

by Barbara Peck
edited by Tim Seawolf-Self

On October 7, 1805, Robert Self and Martha ("Patsy") Walker were married in Prince Edward County, Virginia.  This was Robert's second marriage, his first, to Agnes Watson, taking place on November 18, 1793.  Robert and Martha lived for awhile in Buckingham County and then returned to Prince Edward County about 1820.  They had three known sons: Joseph, Daniel, and Ephraim.  Nothing more is known about Ephraim, but the descendants of Joseph and Daniel were surprised to learn that their origins were the same.  Joseph Self stayed in Virginia long enough to marry Sarah Gauldin and then moved his family first to Bath County, KY and then Saline County, Missouri.  Daniel Self also married his wife, Sarah Garrett, in Virginia and went to Meriwether County, GA shortly thereafter.  The families of these brothers were split until just a few years ago, and that "reunion" in itself was a big breakthrough for researchers.

Although we have no dates for Martha (Walker) Self, we do know that her parents were William and Drusilla Watkins (Woodson) Walker.  But until now, we've been unable to place Robert Self in any recorded Self family, even on a "best evidence" basis.  Now, thanks to researcher Glenda Trogdon, we know who he was and how he relates to the descendants of "Olde" Robert Selfe.

THE DISCOVERY

Glenda, a descendant of Robert Self through his son, Joseph, has presented the following documentation:

1. Found in the "Cumberland County Virginia Court Order Books August 1767 to December 1787" by Roger G. Ward the following can be found:

    A. page 46:  page 436: 25 May 1772 Charles Woodson Junior admin of Jenkins Self

    B. page 47: page 474: 22 June 1772 Church Wardens of Southam Parish bind Robert Self orphan of Jenkins Self to John Radford Junior.

    C. page 52: page 49: 7 November 1772 Church Wardens of Southam Parish bind Sarah Self, Larkin Self and Elizabeth Self to William Watson.

2. "Marriage Bonds and Minister's returns of Powhatan, County, Virginia 1777-1830" by Catherine Lindsay Knorr, 1957: page 57:  25 Nov 1794 Larkin Self and Rebecca Baugh.  Sur. John Smith.

3. Powhatan Co. Marriage Register page 28. 18 Nov 1793 Robert Self and Agness Watson.  Sur. Jeffery Davis.

4. Powhatan County Marriage Register p 25.  Since we have proof that this Robert Self married Martha Walker in PE Co. in 1805 and their children we can be sure she died and Martha is his second wife.

5. Robert Self is listed in the Powhatan Co. Tax Lists 1782 & 1784 then again in 1787-1788-1798.

7. "Land Tax Summaries & Implied Deeds 1782-1814, Vol !" Buckingham Co., Virginia Records: page 269:  Self: Self, Robert.  1788 to 1814.  1813/1814 _Location:_  residence on
Appomattox River (15SE), adjacent to Ben. Allen and Buxton on Little Willis River (15SE and 17 SE), and adjacent William Curd, as well as David Anderson's 220 AC (15SE). The (15SE) refer to distance and direction from the Buckingham Courthouse in Maysville to the property so he resided 15 miles SE of Maysville.

8. "Genealogical Records of Buckingham County, VA by Edythe Rucker Whitley: 1800 Tax List:
Self, Robert; 1-3-2-0;  Self, Thomas; 1-1.
I haven't a clue who this Thomas Self is.

9. Buckingham County Virginia Records "Land Tax Summaries & Implied Deeds 1815-1840, Vol 2; by Roger G. Ward: page 322 & 323: *Self:* *Daniel*.  1832 to 1834.  Bought: 1832 145 AC on APX (15SE), his lot in estate of Robert Self.  Sold: 1834 land to Lackland.

10. *Ephraim.  *1832 to 1834.  Bought: 1832 167 AC on APX  (15 SE) , his lot in estate of Robert Self.  Sold: 1834 167 AC (18SE to Stephen Moss.

11. *Joseph.*  1832 to 1836.  Bout: 1832 160 AC on APX (15SE), his lot in estate of Robert Self.  1834 30 AC (15SE) from W.W. Wilbourne.  Sold: 1834 12 AC on APX (15SE) to W.W. Wilbourne; also, 178 AC (18SE) to Stephen Moss.  1836 the lands of Joseph Self omitted at request.  (He was in Bath Co. KY by 1839 when his son Joseph was born there, maybe by 1836)

12. *Robert#*.  1815 to 1820.  Estate 1821 to 1831.  Bought: 1817 268 and 1/4 AC adjacent residence  on APX (15SE) from Josias Allen.  Sold: 1817 69 AC adjacent David Anderson (15SE) to William Woodson.

And last but not least:

13. "Abstracts of Cumberland County, Virginia Will Books 1 and 2 1749-1782" by Katherine Reynolds: page 8: Will of Peter Louis Soblett of King William Parish in Cumberland County,
5 Nov 1*754*, 27 Jan 1*755*. Wit:  Ginkins Self (X), Abraham Self (?)

Glenda also learned that after Jenkins Self died, either Larkin had requested Robert Self to be his guardian or Robert was appointed as such or both.  Court records of 1783 show that Larkin chose Robert at the time of his father's death sometime before 1770.  For quite some time, we have had Larkin being born about 1761.  Jenkins was born about 1740, so that means that Robert, as an older brother, must have been born before 1761 when his father was quite young.  Keep in mind that these birth and death dates are all approximate and could encompass a much wider span of time than indicated.

LINGERING QUESTIONS

Now that Robert Self's father has been identified and two of his sons brought together again through their descendants, immense progress has been made on this branch of the family.  But there are still some unanswered questions that need to be addressed.

First, the parentage of Jenkins Self is given as "best evidence." This is mostly based on the fact that his name is the same as the maiden name of Thomas Self's wife.  According to the "Early Ancestors" document by Virginia Easley, this idea was introduced by W. C. Self but she was unable to find any proof of this relationship. It would be interesting to see what DNA testing of Robert Self's descendants would show when compared with that of Thomas's documented children.  Testing would probably have to be done at a very large marker level, but it might be our only chance of resolving this question once and for all.

Second, we might want to consider that Jenkins Self could have used his middle name during most of his life.  He may also have been listed as some other given name when he was born.  Determining if this is true or false may yield some evidence to prove that he is the son of Thomas Self.

Third, what happened to Robert's sisters, Elizabeth and Sarah? It's much easier to follow males in the Census, even when full names weren't given, since the Head of Household was always named.  But unless there are extant marriage records or some way to identify women (perhaps one married and had a son named Jenkins or Larkin), they often got lost in time. In the usual family scenario in the 18th and 19th centuries, women tended to marry within their home state, county, and community.  It was common for a man from outside those boundaries to move to his wife's place of residence.  An exception, however, was when the man had a definite desire to move to a third location.  This move was often made when the husband received a land grant for military service or when other members of his family bought frontier land and offered him some acres to join them. If anyone is researching these two women, please let us know what you've found so far.

Fourth, what happened to Robert's son, Ephraim?  Did he die young?  Or did he move to Missouri also or to Kentucky, Georgia, or some other state?  Or did he simply die of old age, unmarried and without descendants?

SUMMARY

Thanks to the excellent research by Cousin Glenda Trogdon, Robert Self is now at home in his proper lineage.  There are just a few more questions to be answered before the entire mystery of this Self line is completely solved.  We'll keep you updated on any new developments.

DEAD ENDS
part 5
"E"
by Barbara Peck and Tim Seawolf-Self

When we began "SelfSite at RootsWeb," our objective was to present as much unrelated Self data as possible in the hopes that these individuals and families would be recognized by someone out there.  Because the Selfs married into many other surnames, it's just possible that a person surfing the Web could come across a Self connection that was previously unknown to them.  We divided the entries into two groups:  "Loose Ends" and "Dead Ends."  The Loose Ends are Selfs for whom we have no ready ancestry.  The Dead Ends are marriages of Self descendants for whom we are seeking descendants.  We've decided to reprint the "Dead Ends" bit by bit in this netletter to make it easier for you to go through them and to give visitors to our sites one more point of access.  Also there have been additions, deletions, and corrections.  Please check your records to see if any of these couples are in your database.  As always, information you may provide to us is for posterity.  Living people will not be put on the Web.
