SELF PORTRAITS

The amount of ancestral information on the Web is growing.  Some new and exciting data has been presented on families never traced before.  But unfortunately, there are also many mistakes which can lead researchers astray.  To clarify, we don't mean connections suggested by "best evidence."  We all know that the extant paper documentation on the early American Selfs has been investigated over and over again.  We aren't likely to learn much more from them.  We're pleased to see the DNA project making headway, and we're hoping that someday it will be an inexpensive way of mapping Self lineages and those of allied lines.  Until then, there are many ways to arrive at fairly solid conclusions based on geographical movement, unusual given names, and Census records.  We know of quite a few instances where several researchers have arrived at the same conclusion independently, lending even more credence to a possible relationship between individuals and families.  But we also know that the very worst thing one can do is to simply copy information from a book or another Website without conducting any investigation on their own.  If you see a "family tree" that is accompanied by a disclaimer, do take that into consideration.  This disclaimer means that the researcher is ready and willing to admit mistakes if proven wrong--and you should be, too.  Be wary of work that cites just one source.  You probably have no way of knowing if that source is reliable.  What do others say?  And what sources were used by your source?  Also don't form a conclusion or read that of someone else and then try to make the available data fit your model.
Someday, we will know what really happened--or at least, we hope so!

FAVORITE WEBSITES AND DATABASE MAINTENANCE
by Barbara Peck
edited by Tim Seawolf-Self

INTRODUCTION

For the last sixteen years, we've been gathering Selfs and trying to fit them into a "family tree" we call our "Big Document."  The information has come from a variety of sources including the Web and direct correspondence with cousins, material in libraries, the National Archives, and the local LDS Family History Center.  Our compilation now takes up fifteen large files in Microsoft Word as well as separate files for our "Loose" and "Dead" ends, one for each state--sometimes two, four miscellaneous collections, and files for several other countries.

So we have an extensive garden blooming with ancestors and contemporaries.  But, as with any garden, it needs maintenance to flourish and grow and become better and better as time goes on.  With this in mind, we added one more large task to our daily work:  revising our "Big Document."  This article tells how we're using our favorite free and low-cost Websites to do this.

REVISION

The revision of our "Big Document" consists of filling in the blanks.  Our mission includes completing birth, marriage, and death dates;  adding the parents of spouses married into the Self or allied lines;  listing newly found children;  and, most important of all, trying to discover what happened to children who remain unaccounted for in our files.  We are going through the "Big Document" person by person to answer these questions.  Not all of them have answers now, but they might someday as the Web continues to grow.  Fortunately, there are lots of genealogy sites available to use.  Our favorites are listed below.

Google, Yahoo, and Other Search Engines

Assuming that we have verified all the children from a couple in the previous generation, we then look at the list and see which of them are not marked as married or having offspring of their own.  One by one, we try to find out any further information about them.  The first step is searching in a general search engine. We use various searches such as given name, the name along with the name of the spouse, the birth year, etc.

Sometimes we find nothing.  Other times we find some goldmines.  Some researchers have added entire "books" in the form of PDF files while others have posted queries that mention the individual and possibly his family.  Often there are many sites that contain data, but not all are usable without a definite commitment.  Some just ask you to register.  Quite a few, though, are hosted by businesses or cooperatives that charge a fee to view the record or worse, a hefty monthly or yearly membership price.

Ancestry

Known for charging everyone for everything, Ancestry has recently compiled a free and helpful source at http://records.ancestry.com   The header gives the name of the individual being searched and the number of associated records, photos, and documents found in the Ancestry database.  Vital statistics come next.  If there are multiple individuals with the same name, there is an option to link to other records. A space for visuals--pictures and documents associated with the name being searched--a feature that has worked well for a long time is now mostly offline.  Often the visuals didn't fit the individual in question but did provide leads to other Selfs with similar names  There is a column with a list of "top record matches," a brief history of the surname, and a short section of resources. The most useful part of this page to us is a second column listing the known immediate family members.  You can often search each child to find out more about the next generation.  It's easy to find these Ancestry record pages since the basic URL almost always contains the term "ashx."

FamilySearch.org

If you can't find what you're looking for in a general search, you can try a few other databases.  Our next step would be the LDS site, http://familysearch.org.  This newly-designed site contains all its old records and new ones, with many more search options.  Go to either "Trees" or "Records" and enter the name of the person you're researching.  Then use what you already know to choose the appropriate limiting searches.  Selecting a life event gives you the opportunity to enter location and a range of years.  Even more specific entries can be found if you know the names of spouses or parents.

One of the coolest features of the LDS site is the ability to search by surname alone without entering a given name.  You will get lots of results, helpful if you're trying to find all individuals with a certain surname.  If the list is too long, try putting just "A" in the given name slot, collecting your results, and then going on down the alphabet.

Now, let's say that you just found the marriage of a female Self.  You can go to the home page and enter her new surname but no given name.  Click on "Birth" and enter their county of marriage, enter a reasonable range of dates, then click on "Parents" and enter the first names of father and mother.  In many cases you'll find a whole list of this couple's children and also learn if and where they moved during their lifetimes.  This site can also show records that don't quite meet your criteria but may be of interest anyway.

WorldConnect

We remember when RootsWeb/Ancestry's World Connect was just a fledgling site, competing with others for "family trees."  Today it's absolutely gigantic.  Our goal of getting through all the Selfs that once took a few weeks now takes a few years.  But of all the sites with free family trees, this one is the best.  If you've hit a brick wall, try to break through using WorldConnect.  The search is simple:  first and last name (or surname only) with whatever modification criteria you choose.  Despite its large size, it's still a growing site, so check back often.

Find-a-Grave

Another helpful and free search site is http://www.findagrave.com.  This database contains mostly individuals born and buried in the United States, but it also includes some soldiers--American and British--who died overseas in the line of duty.  You can enter just a surname in the search box, or you can enter a specific individual.  The basic information given (if known) is birthdate, death date, locations for both events, the name and location of the cemetery, and a link to the person who maintains the record.  In many instances, there is also a photo of the deceased and/or the cemetery entrance or headstone, an obituary taken from a newspaper and listing names of family members, and links to the entries for other deceased relatives.  The site is interactive in that you can leave flowers, thoughts, and kind words for those who have passed on.

The Census at Genealogy.com

There are several sites that offer Census information.  Our favorite is at http://www.genealogy.com  It costs almost $100/year, but it is well worth it.  The search term results lead directly to a Census page.  And you can browse as well as search.  First you choose Census year, then a state, and then a county.  The counties are divided into precincts or neighborhoods.  But you can search all of the Census or just a portion.  You can search full names or see all individuals with your  particular surname.  Two drawbacks to this Census:  (1) not everything is indexed, and 1940 doesn't even show up yet;  and (2) you can only look up specific heads of families in the index, not spouses or children, unless you are searching only a surname (no given name).  The search hierarchy of this site is perfect for transcribers, and it's our choice for work in our USGenWeb counties.

Other Sites

Some of the best information comes from death records.  We have some favorites.  We recommend GenealogyBank for both its Social Security Death Index and its newspaper obituaries.  The SSDI is nicely arranged into groups of states and counties, and if you browse, it follows from latest to earliest date.  You can search for an individual or for an entire surname.  Yes, this site leaves off the Social Security numbers of the deceased, but it's free and updated often.  The newspaper obituaries are arranged the same way.  They are presented just as they appear in the print publications, so sometimes they yield a wealth of information while at others, just a small amount of information is included.  The obituaries require a fee of about $60 per year, but it is worth every cent.

Ancestry doesn't charge for everything.  Sometimes you can get good free information from some of their partial lists.  Check out the births, marriages, and deaths.  Enough is given to identify the individual.  Searching can be done on a number of elements including name and surname.

Nuggets of data can also be mined from "people finder" sites (usually name, location, and possible relatives are shown at no cost) as well as forums and message boards.  The latter may hold clues to early ancestors while the former deals with living people.  There are also quite a few free vital records sites on the Web, some general and some for a particular state or country.

SUMMARY

The Web is a wonderful place to find helpful genealogical research.  We're so lucky to be able to share from our desks rather than to run around to courthouses and libraries.  Collaboration just seems natural when you consider that all Selfs are cousins.  The only word of caution is, as always, to be very careful what you accept and what you reject.  Once again, common given names in two families is better "best evidence" than simply the desire for Native American or Irish ancestry.  Check out the sites in this article, if you haven't already done so--they are the very best of the best!

DEAD ENDS
part 13
"S"
by Barbara Peck and Tim Seawolf-Self

When we began "SelfSite at RootsWeb," our objective was to present as much unrelated Self data as possible in the hopes that these individuals and families would be recognized by someone out there.  Because the Selfs married into many other surnames, it's just possible that a person surfing the Web could come across a Self connection that was previously unknown to them.  We divided the entries into two groups:  "Loose Ends" and "Dead Ends."  The Loose Ends are Selfs for whom we have no ready ancestry.  The Dead Ends are marriages of Self descendants for whom we are seeking descendants.  We've decided to reprint the "Dead Ends" bit by bit in this netletter to make it easier for you to go through them and to give visitors to our sites one more point of access.  Also there have been additions, deletions, and corrections.  Please check your records to see if any of these couples are in your database.  As always, information you may provide to us is for posterity.  Living people will not be put on the Web.
