TRAVELING SELFS
Summer is here again. This year, with the
economy such as it is, you may be choosing more thrifty destinations,
closer to home and costing less money, but probably most of you will go
somewhere, even on a day trip or a weekend getaway. We've already
had our fun for now. Tim took a long cross-country mixed
business/pleasure trip to Florida and Texas and a few other states in
between. Then we spent a weekend camping in the desert and
another in NV enjoying a trade show. And during all those times,
we gave some thought to our ancestors and how they moved around,
eventually spreading out across country also, but from East to
West. A few followed the wagon train circuit, making their
journey all at one time. But most went place to place, generation
by generation, leaving behind the old and welcoming the new. This
month we feature North Carolina, one of the earliest destinations for
Self and other families. North Carolina has a great history, full
of changing boundaries and governments, and was home for some time to a
great many Selfs, especially those descending from the Stephen Self
line. It's been fun for us to do the research and learn about
this state's amazing past. We hope you enjoy reading about what
we discovered.

NORTH CAROLINA
by Barbara Peck
edited by Tim Seawolf-Self
"Olde" Robert Selfe was born in England, but he lived much of his adult
life in Virginia. From there, his descendants eventually spread
out over the entire country. Many of these early families began
their migrations in North Carolina, moving on from there to other
southern states and eventually into the midwest, Texas and Oklahoma,
and finally California and other locations in the far West.
When we discover that our Selfs once lived in North Carolina, our first
instinct is to go to an atlas or road map and find the county where
they settled. However, what we find may not be accurate in
historical context because North Carolina expanded greatly from the
1600s, and its counties changed borders quite often. New counties
were formed. And in some cases, they became parts of neighboring
states. Thus, families living in one area could suddenly find themSelfs
in a different location without ever moving from their homes.
Please note that we are not experts on this subject. We've
provided a few references at the end of this article--some with
maps--so you can check out your own ancestral migrations to, from, and
within North Carolina.
A
BRIEF CHRONOLOGY
Carolina was established as one of the original colonies, established
in 1663 by order of King Charles II. In 1712, this area was
officially split into two separate entities: North and South
Carolina. In addition to native Indians, settlers consisted of arrivals
from England, Scotland, and Ireland and migrants from Virginia
including descendants of "Olde" Robert Selfe. In the beginning,
much of what we now know as North Carolina was wilderness. The
original colony had just two counties: Albemarle in the Northeast
and Clarendon in the southwest portion of the inhabitable land.
Four years after Carolina's establishment, Clarendon County had
disappeared from the map, leaving Albemarle as the only settlement.
In 1689, Albemarle County was also history. Its demise, however,
left some descendants (precincts) in its place: Chowan,
Currituck, Pasquotank, and Perquimans. These districts were
joined by Bath County in 1696, located directly below them, which, in
turn, was divided into three precincts by 1705. By 1729, the
various precincts had been divided and subdivided into more precincts
and covered the entire eastern end of the state as we know it today.
The precincts became smaller and smaller and more numerous until 1734
when they were all named as counties.
In 1762, Mecklenburg County was spawned from its parent, Anson.
Mecklenburg, located in the southern part of the state, was one of the
destinations of the Selfs. Another important location--Orange
County--had been formed a decade earlier in the northern portion.
We find that the descendants of Philip Self lived in Mecklenburg while
those of his brother, Job, settled in Orange. Bute, another Self area,
was partitioned from Granville County in 1764. By 1770, Chatham and
Guilford emerged--but if you lived in Chatham, you had probably lived
in Orange the year before. Guilford was also part of Orange and
part of Rowan as well.
Did you know that in addition to the familiar Washington, District of
Columbia there was a District of Washington in North Carolina, formed
in 1776? This area was the extreme western part of the state,
bordering Surrey, Rowan, and Tryon on the east. A year later, a
part of this district became Washington County, TN. So anyone
living in that location now resided in another state entirely.
One of the confusing parts of Self research comes from the
disappearance of Bute County. In 1779, 15 years after it was
formed, the county split into two smaller counties, Warren and
Franklin. For example, our ancestor, the original Job Self, had
gone first (about 1755) to Orange County and then moved on in 1769 to
Bute. We have a note that he bought and sold land in Warren County
between 1770 and 1782. If these transactions were made before
1779, they would have been made in Bute County. By the time he
was listed as a juror in Franklin County (1786) he would have had
several county addresses even though he lived in the same general
area.
In 1782, another county favored by the Selfs was taken from Burke
County and named Lincoln. More surveying was done in the
Washington District, and a year later, more territory became part of
Tennessee: Davidson and Greene counties. But in between
Tennessee and North Carolina was the actual state (not the county) of
Franklin. Franklin was made up of seven counties: Caswell,
Sevier, Spencer, Wayne, Greene, Sullivan, and Washington, with Blount
joining in 1786. The state of Franklin had a very short life and
ceased to exist in 1788.
By the following year, the southeastern part of the District of
Washington was designated as "Indian Land." The former counties of the
State of Franklin became part of Tennessee a year after that. And
in 1791, Buncombe County, home to many Selfs (including our line) was
formed from Burke and Rutherford. The District of Washington
continued to shrink, pushing the Indian Lands to the southwestern part
of the territory. And in 1803, the State of Georgia further
diminished these lands by establishing the small county of Walton at
their far southeastern end. The boundaries of this Georgia county
were indistinct, but it definitely took more from the Indians and
abutted Buncombe County on the east.
Meanwhile, many of the counties not typically home to any Selfes were
splitting and rearranging themSelfs--not necessarily creating new
counties but changing the boundaries of existing ones. In 1808, a
new county was established from the Western end of Buncombe.
Thus, those who called Buncombe County home may have suddenly found
themSelfs living in Haywood while never moving from their original
dwelling. In 1812, Haywood's neighbor, the nine-year-old county of
Walton, Georgia was abolished and reverted back to Indian land. This
re-enlargement lasted only 16 years. In 1828, Macon was
established, partly from Haywood and partly from an amount of Indian
Land that exceeded what had been gained from Walton's demise. Ten years
later, Macon had expanded and swallowed up the remaining Indian
Land. At this point, the state of North Carolina had the outline
that we know today. Macon was divided the next year. The western
tip of North Carolina was now Cherokee County.
Some of the Lincoln County Selfs suddenly found themSelfs in the new
Cleveland County in 1841. Cleveland had been formed from both
Lincoln and Rutherford. More of Lincoln was lost in 1846 to another new
county, Gaston. In 1849, Buncombe gained back some of its land
from Yancey. Orange County, home to some of the early Selfs, gave
birth to Alamance County--so more people went to a new address without
moving a single step. 1851 also saw the breakup of Self homes
into new counties: Jackson was established between Macon and
Haywood, and Madison from Buncombe and Yancey. Jackson was
further fattened from Macon ten years later; and Clay County was
formed from Cherokee, a tiny county bordering Georgia between its
parent and Macon.
1871 saw the establishment of another new county in the former Indian
Lands. Swain was formed from Macon and Jackson. And in
1872, Clay County became a little larger by stealing land from
Macon. Alamance also gained from Chatham in 1897. In
reality, that added land had been claimed by Alamance for some time, but
the legal boundaries were never surveyed and established until the 1897
date. Chatham lost a little more to Lee County ten years later. In
1921, Cleveland took a little more area from neighboring Gaston, and
Buncome took from McDowell in 1925.
Of course there were many more boundaries altered and counties formed
than we've listed here. We extracted mainly the information that
pertains to major Self strongholds in North Carolina. There were
Selfs in other counties, but most of them were random families and
individuals. And after 1927, activity virtually stopped until
1965 when Moore gained land from Hoke County, neither place having
large Self communities.
SUMMARY
North Carolina is a state with a very interesting past. Its
territories have had many different names. It once housed a
separate state and contributed greatly to the formation of
another. It once had extensive Indian Lands and harbored a county
from a neighboring state. And most confusing of all, the
genealogical note "Went to XXX, NC" means very little unless you know
the history of that county. Good luck!

DEAD ENDS
part 1
"B"
by Barbara Peck and Tim Seawolf-Self
When we began "SelfSite at RootsWeb," our objective was to present as
much unrelated Self data as possible in the hopes that these
individuals and families would be recognized by someone out
there. Because the Selfs married into many other surnames, it's
just possible that a person surfing the Web could come across a Self
connection that was previously unknown to them. We divided the
entries into two groups: "Loose Ends" and "Dead Ends." The
Loose Ends are Selfs for whom we have no ready ancestry. The Dead
Ends are marriages of Self descendants for whom we are seeking
descendants. We've decided to reprint the "Dead Ends" bit by bit
in this netletter to make it easier for you to go through them and to
give visitors to our sites one more point of access. Also there
have been additions, deletions, and corrections. Please check
your records to see if any of these couples are in your database.
As always, information you may provide to us is for posterity.
Living people will not be put on the Web.
