BOO!
Here it is, October again--time for pumpkins and candy
and things that go bump in the night. I sure hope one of the
things on the list is a cool night and maybe some hot chocolate by a
cozy fire. It's been super-hot here in Los Angeles for the past
few weeks--following a very mild summer with a vengeance. October
is our greatest "fire month," but there isn't much left in the hills to
burn. We've had one disaster after another--and we're now
preparing for the inevitable mudslides to come in what is predicted to
be a very wet winter. This month, our feature article concerns
another type of disaster. Being a "coal-miner's granddaughter," I
know something about mines. No matter what you're extracting from
the earth, there's always that chance of danger. My grandfather
was paralyzed for some time following a mining accident. He was
lucky because so many men lost their lives doing the same basic
job. Enjoy this month's issue and think about the unfortunate
Selfs who spent their working days in the dark bowels of the
earth. Honor their ghosts by contemplating how much they gave so
that your ancestors could have better, easier lives.

THE JUMBO MINE DISASTER
by Barbara Peck
edited by Tim Seawolf-Self
It's a beautiful Sunday morning. I'm sitting at my computer in
front of my bedroom window, looking out at the bright blue sky and the
sparkly leaves of my neighbor's tree. Unfortunately, I can't help
thinking about tomorrow--Monday again, and another day at work.
Not too many people really like Mondays. But the residents of
Antlers, Oklahoma had a special reason for disliking Monday, the
twenty-eighth of November, 1910. That was the day that the Jumbo
Asphalt Mine exploded, killing a total of fifteen men. One miner
suffered for one more day before finally expiring; one other man
was a spectator from Texas who had a heart attack at the scene.
But the remaining men all perished in the explosion. Two were named
Self.
The two Self victims were brothers, given in the reports as Charles and
Henry. This information has been misleading to researchers since
Henry, at least, like many other Selfs of his day, was known by his
middle name. Questions from curious cousins have somehow
embellished the legend to include the fact that these brothers came
from England or Ireland to work in the Pushmataha County oil
fields. About the only truth here is that one of them was
actually named "Charles."
Charles Self was born Apr. 23, 1878 in Crawford County, AR, the oldest
child of William T. Self and his first wife, Rebecca C. Reed. His
brother, William Henry Self, was born on Apr. 26, 1881. They had a
sister, Dovie, born in Mar. 1882. Their mother died that year,
and their father raised his three children alone until he re-married
five years later to Martha Rosiene Criss. She was born in
Illinois and nineteen years his junior, just five years older than his
son, Charles. She died in 1944 in Vancouver, Washington.
Together, William T. and Martha Self had six children: Joseph
Thomas (1888-1964); Daniel Tipton (1892-1957); Martha Anna
(1893-1936); Birdie May (1898-1950); George C.
(1900-1988); and Isaac A. (1902-1982). In 1889, the family
was in Indian Territory in what is now Pottawatomie County,
Oklahoma. Another story has it that this family was of Native
American heritage which may or may not be true.
William T. Self was born in March 1854 in Tennessee, although there is
an alternate date of 1856 in some sources. He died on May 24,
1906 in Crawford County, AR. His parents were Thomas and Martha
(Bryan) (Courtney) Self of Greene County, TN. He was the sixth of
seven children, the fourth of five sons. His siblings were:
George (1846); Daniel (1848); Joseph M. (1849-1928); Anna Elizabeth
(1851-1941); Emma Tyler (1854-1948); and Jefferson Davis
(1862- ) We know nothing about George and
Daniel and would appreciate any information you might have on
them. Joseph married Lillian O. Spruill and died in Coalgate,
OK. Anna m. Isaac Newton Burchfield in Washington County, AR and
also drew her last breath in OK. Emma and husband William Rufus
Cusick remained in AR as far as we know, as did Jefferson Davis Self
and wife Mary Melvina Presley. We haven't yet checked the census
for the families of the grandchildren, so it's also possible that the
entire group moved to OK at some point. Again, information would
be most welcome.
Thomas Self, sixth generation, was born Apr. 2, 1779, probably in
VA. His wife, Elizabeth Roark, was born a year later. We
have seen her written as "Betsy Combs" (1780-1852), but it must be
remembered that years ago there was a lot of false information
circulating involving this particular line of Selfs. Thomas Self
was the tenth of twelve children born to this couple. There was
almost a "genealogical generation" between Thomas and his oldest
sister, Lettice, and there were still two more brothers to come.
Thomas and all the rest of his siblings remained in the Green County,
TN area where his parents had removed at some point in their marriage.
Joseph Self (1746- ) and his wife, Elizabeth, had 12
children. Of those, one died young, and two--Thomas (above) and
Jesse are known to have had descendants, forming the Greene County Self
group that also resided in neighboring Tennessee counties. The
fate of the other 9 children is still unknown. Joseph himSelf was born
in Loudon County, VA., third of eight children in the family of Thomas
and Elizabeth (Jenkins) Self. That Thomas (1719-1781) was born in
Westmoreland County, VA., son of Henry and Martha (Cox) Self, grandson
of Francis and Rebecca (Stephens) Self, and great grandson of our
Southern progenitor, "Olde" Robert Selfe.
Thus, the two Self victims of the Jumbo Mine explosion were no
strangers to America. Their paternal line extended all the way
back into the 17th century, representing one of the larger Self
branches in our files.
Cousins who have read about the Jumbo Mine Explosion have all been
curious about the Selfs who perished in that tragedy. As with
most disasters, events became legends and people became mythical
figures. It seems as if everyone had a story and a possible
background for the Self brothers. But we now know that their Self
heritage goes back from Oklahoma through Arkansas to Tennessee and to
Virginia, the cradle of Selfdom. We know for certain that any
"ethnic blood" they might have had would have been from one of the
female sides--more than possible since a few of them as yet have no
maiden names or backgrounds known to researchers. There's good
cause to believe in a Native American heritage somewhere along the line
since so many in this family ended up in Oklahoma. On the other
hand, in the days when fossil fuels were becoming more and more
important, many young men were drawn to the oil fields where work was
plentiful and unskilled laborers were in great demand.
Two days after the explosion, on Wednesday evening, a service was held
for the Self brothers and their fellow workers. The majority of
them were buried side by side in the church cemetery where their
monuments stand today.

DEAD ENDS
part 3
"C"
by Barbara Peck and Tim Seawolf-Self
When we began "SelfSite at RootsWeb," our objective was to present as
much unrelated Self data as possible in the hopes that these
individuals and families would be recognized by someone out
there. Because the Selfs married into many other surnames, it's
just possible that a person surfing the Web could come across a Self
connection that was previously unknown to them. We divided the
entries into two groups: "Loose Ends" and "Dead Ends." The
Loose Ends are Selfs for whom we have no ready ancestry. The Dead
Ends are marriages of Self descendants for whom we are seeking
descendants. We've decided to reprint the "Dead Ends" bit by bit
in this netletter to make it easier for you to go through them and to
give visitors to our sites one more point of access. Also there
have been additions, deletions, and corrections. Please check
your records to see if any of these couples are in your database.
As always, information you may provide to us is for posterity.
Living people will not be put on the Web.
