SELF PORTRAITS

Finally it's October again.  Summer has its pleasures, but one of them is not extreme heat.  We're truly looking forward to mild days and cold nights for the next nine months or so.  Even sitting amidst all of today's electronic gadgets--our computers, cell phones, televisions, and other devices--there's a part of us that longs for the coming of Fall.  The days are getting shorter, the sun weaker, and there is once again the scent of fireplaces and cinnamon in the air.  Our ancestors could not enjoy our modern marvels, but we can still share the seasons with them, delighting in the sights, sounds, and smells that means autumn the world over.  For our cousins in the Southern Hemisphere, just wait!  You'll get your turn, too, but in the meantime, enjoy the flowers and the green leaves as ours turn to reds, browns, and yellows.  We all have our seasons, and in spite of its modern disguise, the world is still much the same as it always was for our forebears.  Happy Fall!

RELIABLE DATA ON THE WEB

by Barbara Peck
edited by Tim Seawolf-Self

INTRODUCTION

Many years ago, almost all of my sources were primary ones.  In the days before computers, I visited many town halls and courthouses and cranked a lot of microfilm.  It was a special treat to be able to talk with elderly people who remembered ancestors long gone to dust and to correspond with living descendants.  Secondary sources were almost always books.  I never went into a library without checking the volumes in the genealogy section for surnames of interest.  But underneath it all, there was still a small doubt about the reliability of the data.  Did the Census Takers and County Clerks know how to spell?  Was their handwriting legible and their ink pens blot-free?  Did the nice lady who gave me homemade ice cream really know her great uncle, or was she handing down lore and legend?  And did the compilers of those books actually research the families involved, or did they rely on hearsay and a hurried interpretation of old records?

THE WEB

The Web was born, and the interest in genealogy soared.  The mid-nineties through the first decade of this century were the heyday of genealogical research.  And anyone with access to the Web could build and publish their own family history, modify it, and compare it to others working on the same lines.  When we began our "Self Portraits" site, there were not that many "trees" online, and the larger organizations such as RootsWeb and Ancestry were having growing pains.  For instance, I can remember when going through the entire "WorldConnect" database took me just a few weeks.  Today, it takes forever.  You could find new information every day, and most of us captured or copied all we could before becoming knowledgeable enough to discriminate between reliable data and bogus claims.

We made a few bad mistakes at the beginning also.  It took quite a few tries to get Tim's line correct, so if someone took our initial efforts as gospel and never kept up with later efforts, they would have a really erroneous "tree" by now.  Of course, there are mistakes and there are mistakes.  There is a great difference between making statements based on "best evidence" and allowing for later revision and presenting a guess as positive fact and refusing to acknowledge anything else.

Our sources are still as varied as they were in the good old days.  We still use book entries, handwritten Census and vital records, and reminiscenses of elderly family members, even though most of it is digital and no longer physical.  We also utilize the many compilations posted on genealogy sites and forums by other researchers.  Sometimes even a person who has no idea about their particular line can also have one small piece of information that we overlooked before.  Every little bit helps.

On the whole, we find that most online genealogies are pretty accurate.  This may be because they are passed from source to source.  But we usually find the greatest discrepancy in dates, in which case we list both of them in our files.  Having corresponded with literally thousands of Self cousins throughout the world can also give you an idea of who is more reliable when some difference occurs.

For many years, we have referred to our files as the largest repository of Self information that exists.  True, we have some unconnected and scattered entries--in fact, quite a few "loose" and "dead" ends that we hope to resolve some day--but we have made an effort to connect as many American individuals and families as possible and we're now spending a lot of time and energy in doing the same for the Selfs in England.  But a single-surname endeavor, no matter how large, is tiny compared to the management of the big all-encompassing genealogy sites.  One difference is that we are just two people trolling for information while the large sites have a lot of help from a lot of people, both their own large staffs and many contributors.

The large genealogy sites make little or no effort to connect the data they collect.  That responsibility falls to the contributors who submit gedcoms, family group sheets, stories, and fit their findings into the organization's format of pages and links.  This is as it should be--an exchange between two interested parties.  But there are two things wrong with this method.  And although we can recognize and discuss these major shortcomings, there doesn't seem to be any way to improve the vicissitudes of human nature.

PUBLISHING PROBLEMS

None of our American freedoms come without a price.  There are always two sides to every issue.  In the case of the First Amendment, we are technically allowed to say anything we want without fear of government reprisal.  But government notwithstanding, we aren't guaranteed freedom from counterstatements made by those who disagree with us.  For this reason, most published works contain disclaimers which state that the publisher is not responsible for any statement made by the author or contributor of the material he has published.  The positive side to this practice is that the publisher cannot legally be held to blame for misstatements or unpopular opinions.  The negative side comes when one realizes that the publisher cannot rightfully strike or change those same misstatements and unpopular opinions unless he himSelf was the one who stated them.

In a genealogical context, this means that a site that accepts material for a forum, for a "tree" project, or as a release of records in the public domain must present them as submitted.  With the gray area exception of "foul language," "outright slander," total irrelevance (hackers posting messages that have nothing to do with the topic, for example) or other written policy prohibitions, there is no "company researcher" who is going to edit that material or strike portions of it for any personal reason.  So if you find an obvious mistake in a family tree, for example, you cannot appeal to the publisher to change or edit out what is written.  Any attempt to try will most likely be met with a referral to the disclaimer and an invitation to write directly to the contributor with your complaint.

Most researchers are honest people.  They try their best to make statements and relationships based upon fact.  Sometimes they must resort to "best evidence" when factual information is lacking.  But they all want to find out what really happened, even if it means altering something in their material.  But there are others who won't bend, even to the truth.  The reason for this stubbornness is unclear.  Are they convinced that they can't make errors?  Are they too lazy to reconfigure their data?  Or do they truly believe that their sources are iron-clad?  Who knows--but the one clear problem is that these people are disseminating false information to the rest of the world when they place it on the Web with no disclaimer and refuse to make corrections when faced with provable facts.

So, as far as reliability is concerned, the admonition is "always verify for yourSelf" or at least be willing to alter your work when you're shown proof that you're wrong.  And when copying information from a published source that admits its uncertainty of some portions, leave yourSelf as open to change as that source has done.

SUMMARY

Are your sources reliable?  We've seen plenty of personal compilations that are full of blatant errors and guesses that make no sense or have already been proven wrong.  But the "official" records certainly aren't as accurate as we'd like to think they are.  When transcribing Census records or records for a major genealogical site, the many--often unseasoned--workers are putting down what they think they see despite ink blots, water stains, and impossibly light writing.  But the primary records themSelfs have just as many problems.  Census Takers and County Clerks often had sloppy handwriting, bad hearing, poor spelling skills, and usually wrote down just what they were told without questioning it.  We've seen birth and death certificates with erroneous names and dates, too.  Even government records cannot be trusted one hundred percent.  We've tried to work around these problems by adding both dates when we have a choice or noting that a given and middle name are sometimes reversed.  But you need to use your own judgment.  It's not "wrong" to use modern-day spelling in your own records.  But do annotate changes you make so that your uploads will be as close to reliable as possible.  Others will be grateful to you for doing so.

DEAD ENDS
part 15
"W-Z"
by Barbara Peck and Tim Seawolf-Self

When we began "SelfSite at RootsWeb," our objective was to present as much unrelated Self data as possible in the hopes that these individuals and families would be recognized by someone out there.  Because the Selfs married into many other surnames, it's just possible that a person surfing the Web could come across a Self connection that was previously unknown to them.  We divided the entries into two groups:  "Loose Ends" and "Dead Ends."  The Loose Ends are Selfs for whom we have no ready ancestry.  The Dead Ends are marriages of Self descendants for whom we are seeking descendants.  We've decided to reprint the "Dead Ends" bit by bit in this netletter to make it easier for you to go through them and to give visitors to our sites one more point of access.  Also there have been additions, deletions, and corrections.  Please check your records to see if any of these couples are in your database.  As always, information you may provide to us is for posterity.  Living people will not be put on the Web.

Correction Notice:  The April 2013 "Dead Ends" section contains surnames beginning with "T" and not "Y" as written
