(di) indicates a record from a death index from the indicated state of death, usually Oregon or California. (ssdi) is from one of the several Social Security Death Index listings online. (mi) is used for a marriage record for the indicated location. (eb) is used for notes from material by Elsie Browning. Others should be indicated in the list of references below the family. Typically, only the "most reliable" source is cited. In some cases data felt to be in error is included to indicate that the author was aware of it. This is not done to embarrass the source but to point out a problem.

The earliest Jared Michael ancestor commonly given in pedigrees is Paul or Paulus Michael. A Family Group Sheet for Johannes MICHEL and Margaretha SCHUETZ, married Furth, Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt Palatinate lists a son Paul born 22 March 1716 at Brombach (gma). It is not clear if these are presumed to be the parents or only a possibility (cms).

Paul/Paulus MICHAEL, born 1708, Germany, will dated 30 Mar 1768 Lower Windsor Township, York, Co., Pennsylvania, probated 11 April 1768, York, Co., Pennsylvania, came to America on 27 Aug 1739, age 31, on ship "Samuel" from Rotterdam, Capt. Hugh Percy. A brother is said to have come to America but apparently on another ship. The brother reportedly settled in Virginia. Paul married in Germany,

JARED MICHAEL AND DESCENDANTS

Jared MICHAEL, son of Casper MICHAEL and Hannah/Johanna (FOX/FUCHS) (eb), born 9 Oct 1792 (eb,mc), Morgantown, Monongalia Co., WV (eb), died before 1870 (mc) or 26 Oct 1873 (gp) Linn Co., Oregon, interred in an unmarked grave Michael Cemetery near Brownsville, Linn Co., Oregon (mc). They lived in what was then Virginia but is now West Virginia, and are said to have emigrated to White Co. Indiana, 1820 but apparently he is the Jared who took a land entry to 160 acres meridian 1,T7N R3W sec 12 NE corner 21 Aug 1818 in Manchester Twp., Dearborn Co. A Jared Michael is in Dearborn Co. in the 1820 census. They left for Oregon 1846 and overwintered in Missouri. In the spring of 1847, they left on a wagon train with 6 children, some married. The train was co-captained by Alex and William Vaughan. Jared was a farmer and a Methodist preacher. He reportedly settled near Brownsville 7 Oct 1847 and filed Donation land claim #1753 Linn Co., Oregon, S. C. 7 Mar 1849. This claim is about three and one-half miles southwest of Brownsville and is oriented with magnetic north, not true north. In the 1849 census, J. Mikel has 2 adult males (Jared and Eli?), 3 younger males (Elijah, David, and Jared?) and 4 females (Mary, Mary, Marinda and Jane Hodges?). J. Clark is listed as having 1 adult male (Jason), 2 younger ones (James and David) and 2 females (Anna and Elizabeth). T. Cady has 1 adult male (Thomas) and a female (Elizabeth). Their son John Bennett MICHAEL came to Oregon in 1870 and lived on the claim for about 5 years before selling it (eb). Jared married 23 Dec 1815, Pennsylvania (eb),
Mary KELSO, of pure Scotch blood, probably dau of Joseph KELSO and Elizabeth (LAIRD), born 22 Apr 1796 (eb), VA, died before 1870 Linn Co., Oregon (eb), interred unmarked grave, Michael Cemetery near Brownsville, Linn Co., Oregon (mc). The use of the given name "David Kelso" for children and grandchildren of Mary Kelso suggests that her father or grandfather may have been named David but the available evidence does not support this (cms).

Eli resided in Virginia (now West Virginia), Indiana and started for Oregon along with his parents and other family members in 1846 They overwintered in Missouri and left in 1847 in a wagon train with Capt William Vaughn and son Alexander Vaughn as co-captains. When the families started for Oregon in 1847, Nancy is said to have left them along with a James T. MICHAEL, a brother of Eli, and the two younger girls. Some say Nancy and James were in love but others indicate Eli was in love with Jane Hodges and that is the reason Nancy left. They reportedly returned to Indiana but they could not be located there in the 1850 Indiana census. However, in the 1850 Federal Census of Kentucky, Graves Co., p 4, sheet 410, res 22, there is a James T. Michael age 31 (1819) with Nancy, age 24 (1826), Malissa, age 5, Samuel, age 6/12, and James Frazier, age 75. Other than the names, only the age of Malissa seems to match the expected for the desired family. The presence of James Frazier also is suggestive. In 1860, there is no Michael but there is in Graves Co., Mayfield P. O., p 148, res 1049 James Mitchell, age 45 (1825), Nancy, age 30 (1830), Melissa Ann, age 16, Samuel J. age 14, and David age 10. Next door is David Frazier, age 50 and Catherine age 53. It certainly seems possible that this is the same Nancy and should be checked further. Eli asked the Oregon legislature for a divorce on 10 Feb 1849 but was refused because the legislature did not feel they had that power (eb). Apparently, he petitioned the U S District Court, Oregon Territory, Linn County 20 April 1853 and paid $18.30 but this source did not indicate if the divorce was granted. According to Elsie Browning, the record of the marriage to Jane Hodges has not been found but other records from that time period are also missing. The three older children accompanied Eli to Oregon seem to be present in the Jared Michael household in the 1949 census but are not listed in the 1850 census. One must assume they were either overlooked or were with another family and listed under that surname in the 1850 census. There are suggestions that some of the Michaels went to the California gold rush but is seems unlikely the children would be in California without their father in 1850. A typed manuscript, author unknown, supplied by Alma Dever to Mae Drew reports that Eli went to California about 1849-50 and made about $6,000 but that was his brother Elijah. ..References:

Jason apparently married second in Portland 1869 but returned to White River (Kent) until 1871 when he sold. The family moved to Portland where he opened a general store. His wife, Rachel, died in 1876 at the home of her son-in-law Daniel TEST near Junction City Lane Co., OR. Jason is said to have operated the store until 1886. However, Jason is with his son-in-law Levi SMITH in Klickitat Co. 1883 and 1885 census as a widower (cms). He also lived with sone in the White River area and with David Kelso Clark in Hartland, Klickitat Co. north of Lyle WA where he died in 1897. ..References:

William Alexander FORGEY, 8th child of Alexander FORGEY and Elizabeth (SAWYERS), born 5 Jan 1821, Knox Co. TN (bio), died 19 Aug 1896 (Curry Roots 2(1):14) or 1890 (Elsie Browning file) or 1892 in Topwa (Lapwai/Lakevai), Nez Perce Co., Idaho probably near son Alexander. Is reported to have moved to and died in Lake Co (OR?) but this seems unlikely. Probate Records, Curry County Oregon, #72 list widow and Martha Miller in Erma, Curry Co. They started for Oregon in 1846 and overwintered in Illinois. In the spring of 1847 they continued with ox-teams reaching Oregon in the fall. There, they overwintered in the Molalla Valley, Clackamas Co. At least William went to the mines in California in 1849. The family settled on the banks of the Willamette River in Linn Co., Oregon, Donation Land Claim 816, settled 15 Sept 1850. This is where the city of Harrisburg is now located. Portions of this land was given to others to encourage others to settle there. Unfortunately, without legal proceedutres. Much later, Hannah was contacted to sign papers to clear up this oversight. In 1875 the family moved to the old Preston ranch on Pistol River, Curry Co., (bio). There, he raised stock until 1894 when he sold out and, after than, lived with his children (bio).

Joseph ALVORD. Although it has been assumed and reported that he died before the Michaels went to Oregon, this is untrue. The second divorce case in Howard County, Indiana in May 1850 involved Joseph and Elizabeth ALVORD (hc). His attorney filed for divorce in District Court of Howard County in Dec. 1849 on the grounds of abandonment.(dc). The petition states that they were married on or about 30 Sept 1842 (sic) apparently an error. They lived together as husband and wife for 11 months up to about 1 Sept 1844 when she left without cause or provocation (dc). Divorce was granted May 1850 (hc). Elizabeth married second 15 June 1848 Linn Co., Oregon,
Thomas CADY, son of Thomas CADY and Betsy (DELANO) (mfn), born 1814, Oneida Co., NY., died 7 June 1865 as a result of a carbuncle on the neck, interred Pioneer Cem., Lake Geneva, Walworth Co., WI. Thomas may have been orphaned at an early age (tcs). Thomas and a cousin, David CHAMBERLAIN were on the Cox wagon train to Oregon when he was lost (tcs). Later, he was found by the Michaels unconscious on the trail without his horse. They took him in and nursed him back to health (md). After the marriage, they settled in the West Point area of Linn Co., Oregon, on Donation Land Claim #1805. They returned east about 1860. Apparently they went by ship and crossed Panama as part of the journey. They carried $50,000 dollars in gold dust in pockets of vests concocted by Elizabeth (md). At $20 a troy ounce, I calculate that to be about 200 pounds, a significant load. There is no indication where this came from. They travelled first to Wisconsin and then to Missouri (md). They returned to Wisconsin where he died (md). Elizabeth and her family then returned to Missouri with her flock of pedigree sheep with William Bascom as trail boss. She married third Linn Co., Missouri,
William A. BALCOM. Elizabeth died with the birth of their first child. (md). William apparently married ca 1873 Parsons Creek, Linn Co., MO (igi) Laura and married 24 Nov 1882 Linn Co., MO Nannie E. CLOUGH (igi).

He is reported to have walked barefoot most of the way from Missouri to Oregon driving two yoke of oxen. He went to California gold fields at age 18 (1851?) but was robbed by a partner and returned in debt. After marriage, he lived 3 miles south of Harrisburg, Oregon, D.L.C. 1551, Roseburg. then returned to the Jared Michael donation land claim. He entered the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1868 and served as a circuit rider in parts of the Willamette Valley and southern Oregon for 33 years. ..Notes: Andrew enlisted enlisted 28 Aug 1861 in Co C 105 Pennsylvania Inf. as a private and was promoted to corporal. He was missing in action 27 Oct 1864 Boydson Plank Road or Hatchers Run near Petersburgh VA. Reportedly captured and sent to Salisbury NC. In Feb 1865, he reportedly fell over a fence and caused a rupture on the left side. He was paroled March 1865.and discharged at Annapolis MD 6 June 1865 (cwpa). Melissa was living in Puxico, Stodard Co., MO by March 1885 (cwpa) and still there in 1900 (c1900). A third child is indicated but not present with family. They were not found in 1920 but a single Charles Fager, age 53, was found in PA, Northumberland Co Delaware twp as a lodger. In the interview with Mrs. Marena Emma Michael Fruit by Leslie Haskins in 1940, it is stated "We have had the following children, all still living:" and 4 male children are listed (I). However, in the 1900 census, it is also clear that Marena Fruit, wife of Martin is listed as having 6 living children and perhaps as having had 8 children. I originally read it as an 8 on the microfilm but on the online image, it might be read as a slightly different 6. Although in the 1920 census of the Martin Fruit family, a Dorothy, age 15 born, is listed as a daughter, in the 1910 census she is not indicated as a daughter. The last word "out" is clear but the first is not. It might be "Bound." Since the obituary in 1993 for George Fruit states that he is survived by a sister, Dorothy WINTERS of Los Angeles, she must have been considered an adopted child in this family. ..References:

Three Stark brothers came to America in colonial times from Wales but were originally from Scotland. They settled in Vermont and New Hampshire. One of these was General John Stark of Revolutionary fame. James Rice comes from this line. His grandfather, Abraham, went from Vermont to Virginia and on to Kentucky about the time of Daniel Boone. A short time later they moved to Indiana where his son Jesse served in the Blackhawk and other Indian wars. Jesse moved to Wisconsin in June 1849 and he and son James Rice started From Monroe WI for Oregon 3 April 1852. They crossed the Mississippi at Dubuque and Jesse was so pleased with the Iowa country he refused to continue. James and 2 of his sisters with their husbands continued. They arrived at the Willamette River opposite Portland 19 Oct 1852. Later, they moved on to near Roseburg where James helped to build the Umpqua Academy where he later became an instructor. Elizabeth Clark was one of his students. They moved to the Auburn WA area in 1866. After 20 years on the White River, they moved to Seattle where he was involved in the fuel business for 7 years. From there, they moved to Lynden where he was superintendent of the Stickney Home Industrial Indian School for 7 years. (by Mollie Stark Williams 1943) ..References:

He arrived in Oregon 25 Aug 1851 and had donation Land Claim 1797 Roseburg. His sister, Maria ROBE, born 30 () Nov 1825 (c1900) or 1828 (cem), died 15 Oct 1906 Linn Co., OR (di), interred Brownsville Pioneer Cem. (cem) was living with them in 1900. Rev. Robe was trained at a college in Antrim, Ohio, at Muskingum College, New Concord, Ohio, and graduated from Washington College (now Washington and Jefferson College), Washington, Pennsylvania., in 1847. He then attended Western Theological Seminary at Allegheny, PA. He was ordained and became a supply pastor at Coshocton OH. Rev. Robe received the call of the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions in 1851 and started for Oregon. He left in an ox-train about the first of April and arrived in late August. He soon established a base in Eugene, Lane Co. where he was the first Protestant minister of any denomination. There, he organized the first Presbyterian Church there. He took over the church in Brownsville in 1865 and continued there until 1895. Rev. Robe kept a diary of his journey to Oregon which has been published "ROBERT ROBE'S DIARY WHILE CROSSING THE PLAINS IN 1851 - Julie Kidd (1925), 2001."
