Descendants of Francis Kincannon I

---

Introduction

I got Kincannon information from several sources including Margaret Kincannon, the book Southwest Virginia Families by David B. Trimble. 1974; San Antonio, Texas, and Anita Licause (Licause Family webpage). I have attempted to obtain source information from census, etc. as much as time and resources will allow.

The Kincannon family links to the McInroe family through the marriage of Patrick Daniel McInroe to Nancy R. Kincannon.

Francis Kincannon lived in York County, Pennsylvania. On January 12, 1758 her mortaged his personal property and 100 acres in Manallen Twp to Thomas Kelly for 16 pounds. He paid off the mortgage on April 20, 1760. He received 114 acres in Manallen Twp, York County, Pennsylvania and 52 acres in Cumberland Twp, York County, Pennsylvania in land grants before 1767. He later sold his rights to these land grants.

David Return Kincannon born in Hardin County, Tennessee on December 17, 1831.  Moved to Texas as small boy with his parents, when the State was still a Republic.  They settled in Nacogdoches County where he grew up living in unsettled territory.  One story that was told was an incident that happened when David Return was nine years old.

The family trading point was in Shreveport, Louisiana.  It took three weeks to make the trip using oxen over the trail.  His mother and father went to market, taking the younger children and leaving David and William, aged nine and seven,  with their Uncle Sirus Banks.  While their parents were gone, some of the stock wandered away so Sirus went to look for them.  He told the boys not to leave the place until he returned.  They stayed all day by themselves.  When night began to approach and their uncle had not returned William convinced David to let them go coon

hunting.  At sunset they started into the woods with their dogs, all seventeen of them.  It was the custom in those days for a family to have a large pack of dogs as the Indians were afraid of the dogs.  They had hardly gone a ways when the dogs picked up the trail of a coon.  In just a few minutes the coon was high in one of the large trees of which there were many.  They had no gun so the only way to dislodge the coon was for David to climb and thresh him out.  Cutting himself a long can of twenty feet or so, David began his ascent.  As he climbed higher, so did the coon as long as the limbs supported him.  Finally David got close enough to reach it with his long pole and he began hitting it vigorously.  It leaped to the ground where the pack of seventeen dogs charge for the kill. The dogs put up a battle letting out agonizing yelps as it seemed as if they were being torn to pieces.  Finally, the dogs managed to kill it.  It was very dark in the trees but the boys managed to skin the animal there in the wood to bring home the pelt.

In the confusion they started home the wrong way.  One of the dogs would go ahead about thirty feet and then howl mournfully.  Finally the dog caught William hand and turned him

around pulling him so that they realized they were going the wrong way.  They follow the dogs home then.  When they arrived they went out back behind the old smokehouse and stretched out

the hide on the logs to dry.

Sirus returned in the middle of the night.  He asked about their behavior, how they had spent their time.  When they had told their story their Uncle Sirus went out to see the coon hide

with a light.  What he found there was a pelt of a panther (possibly a mountain lion) that measured

seven and six inches from the tip of its nose to the end of the tail.  Some of the dogs had received

great gashed from the claws during the kill.

The early years of David’s manhood were passed in North and West Texas Counties far from white settlements, and he often aided in pushing back the Indians to make way for the settlers coming into the area.  He lead a very active and often dangerous life.  The last Indian fight

he was in was out on the clear fork of the Brazos River, west of Decartur in Wise County.  There

were no more attacks from the Indians after that battle.

On January 29, 1854. at Mt. Vernon, in Eastern Texas, he was married to Jemina Katherine Ingram.  Jemina was born on Feb. 14, 1834 in North Carolina and as a small child moved to South Carolina, then to Georgia before coming to Texas.  David’s courageous young wife shared all the pioneer experiences with her dauntless young  husband, even protecting their

family from Indians and wild animals when her husband had to go to distant cities on business.

In 1861 David Return enlisted in the service of the South and worked in transportation of the army.  He rendered signal service in transporting supplies for the soldiers.  He served honorably in that capacity until the close of the war.  A story that has been told was about his wife

and children while David was away in the Civil War.

One night Jemina woke in the night smelling smoke.  She discovered that the kitchen was on fire.  She woke the children as quickly as possible, gathered up vessels, and rushed them to the

creek to carry water to put out the fire.  In the excitement the children talked about a big black dog they saw at the creek which turned out to be a big black bear.  The next day Jesse William, with the help of an adult tracked and killed the bear.

In 1865, after the Civil War, David was in McLennon County, about 18 miles from Waco, where he purchased teams and equipment to go into the freighting business.  The business took him as far East as New Orleans and as far North as Kansas City and St Louis.  It is told that he hauled the logs that built the first house in Tyler, Texas.  He moved his family to Falls County,

Floresville in Wilson County for a time, then in 1874 returned to McLennon County and bought the home place near Masterville (later changed to Bruceville).  The acreage was supposed to contain 216 acres, more or less but when the fields were laid out it turned out to be much more, closer to a thousand acres.  There was no monetary consideration for the land, it was paid with 21 bales of cotton each year until paid off. The cotton was ginned at the old Westbrook gin which was located in the valley above the old spring.

A story that was told was about an  incident that happened  at the old home place was that David had been across Bullhide Creek until after dark.

He was attacked by a pack of hungry

wolves and had to gallop his horse at a high speed with the wolves snapping at his feet until he was able to reach home.

David and Jemina spent the remaining years actively engaged in farming and raising cattle.

While neither had a formal education they both had a good sense and were anxious to have their

posterity succeed.  They assisted each child in getting started when they got married by giving them $150.00 in cash, a horse, a cow, a sow, a hive of bees, a feather bed with two feather pillows and some quilts.  Before her death Jemina made ten beautiful quilts which were divided among her children by lots.

After many years of productive labor, David and Jemina moved to Bruceville and lived

comfortably off the fruits of the labors.  Jemina passed away at the age of 68 on January 23, 1902.

David passed away at 83 on January 19, 1915 in McLennan Co., Texas.

Their children were as follows:

Peter and Margaret's first child, Hugh was born 1877 in Tennessee. Their next child, Doss, was born 1879 in Texas. So, we know that they moved to Texas between 1877 and 1879.

Peter's mother, Nancy Kincannon, did not come to Texas with them at that time. We know that because she was in Humphrey's County, Tennessee in the 1880 census. We know that several of Peter's brothers and sisters moved to Erath county, Texas after he did. His youngest brother, Patrick, married in Erath County in 1883. It is likely that his mother came to Texas with Peter's siblings around 1881.

Several of Margaret's siblings also came to Erath County Texas about that same time. Her sister, Eliza Ann McMahan Kerr, bore her third child in 1883 in Erath County, Texas.

Arrah Irene would fit between Frank and Olivia because there was 4 yrs between their births. But there was only 27 months between Danie and Frank, so to have 4 children would be impossible unless they were multiple births.  She shows:

Bev,

Please pardon my delay.  I'm a teacher (middle school Language Arts and Spanish) and we start school tomorrow, so I've had a week of inservices and preparations to get ready for my students' return.

I was told by one of Ruben's granddaughters, Veda Barton (now deceased, daughter of Ruben Marks Livingston, the youngest child), that Ruben and Louizor moved out to the Idalou area to live with the daughter (Cora) who had married Owen McInroe.  I also received a letter stating such from Owen's son, Forbes McInroe who lived in Lubbock when I heard from him.  Ruben also had two half-sisters who had both married Huckabays, and they lived in the Lorenzo area.  After Lou died Ruben would often go back and forth and live with his son in Bell County, James Franklin "Frank" Livingston.  He would return from time to time to Forbes McInroe's home (after Forbes's parents had both died).  Ruben Andrew died in June 1943 in Bell County (near Rogers) and was buried in Idalou Cemetery by Louizor, who had died 25 September 1932.

Regards,

Ron

The death certificate of Cora Ann McInroe says she was born Jan. 17, 1886 in Arkansas and died in Lubbock, Lubbock County, Texas on October 9, 1934. Her parents were R.A. Livingston and Louisa McNutt. The informant was O.D. McInroe, her husband.
