GOTHIC, FROM LONDON.
The Shaw Savill liner Gothic
from London via Capetown and Hobart, arrived in the stream at 1.25 this afternoon,
and berthed at No. 1 south, Queen's Wharf, at 2.40 p.m., after having been passed
by the Health Officer (Dr. Pollen) and Customs Surveyor (Mr. R. Martin). The vessel
left Plymouth on the 10th February, and severe weather was encountered right across
the Bay of Biscay. After crossing the Bay the weather gradually improved, and
the remainder of the passage to Teneriffe and Capetown was made under pleasant conditions.
After embarking passengers and mails at the latter port the voyage was
continued on the 3rd March. Moderate winds and seas were experienced until 110 E.
longitude was reached, when the weather became very
unsettled, with strong winds, increasing at times to a gale with heavy hail
squalls and high confused seas, which continued until a few days steam off Hobart.
Hobart was made on the 21st March.
The vessel is now under the command of Captain
Bartlett.
The vessel brought the following saloon passengers
for Wellington from Hobart and the Cape:—
From Hobart—
Miss K. Grant
From the Cape—
Messrs - F. S. Hunt, G. W. Glenny, and H. E.
Welch.
There are 31 third-class
passengers from Capetown.
