GOTHIC, FROM LONDON.
The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's steamer Gothic arrived in port
last evening, and was berthed about 10 o'clock this morning. No one was allowed
on board for an hour or so until three cases of scarlet fever had been landed.
The vessel left London on 30th August, and arrived at Plymouth next day,
leaving again same day. She experienced a fine passage with moderate variable
winds to Teneriffe, arriving there on 5th September, and left the same day, and
met with fair winds and smooth seas until crossing the line, when very strong SE
trades were encountered with heavy seas until passing Cape of Good Hope on 21st
September; thence she fell in with strong south-westerly winds with heavy sea
until passing the Crozet Islands, when moderate to strong WNW winds were
experienced until arrival at Hobart on 9th October. Left again on the 10th, and
met with strong northerly and NNE winds, misty weather, and rough sea until
arrival off Cape Farewell yesterday, arriving in the harbour as above. During
the voyage there were four children down with scarlet fever, one of whom died between
the Cape and Hobart.
