GOTHIC

The GOTHIC departed London on 3 August 1898 and arrived in Wellington via Plymouth, Capetown and Hobart, on 20 September 1898. Captain William H Kidley was in command.

GOTHIC, FROM LONDON.

A few minutes before 5 pm yesterday the fine White Star liner Gothic, Captain Kidley, from London, Plymouth, Capetown, and Hobart, came to an anchorage in the stream, pending the inspection by the Health Officer (Dr James). This proved satisfactory, and at 6.15 pm the big vessel was berthed alongside the outer tee of the Queen's Wharf, in readiness to discharge cargo first thing this morning. Of the voyage Mr. Inman (purser) supplies us with the following particulars:— The Gothic left Plymouth at 3.48 pm on 6th August, and had fine weather and smooth sea across the Bay of Biscay. Passed Teneriffe at 9 am on the 10th, crossed the Equator at 1.15 pm on the 17th in longitude 10 deg 9min W, and met with light, variable winds to moderate fresh SE trades until arrival at Capetown at 3.25 pm on the 26th. Embarked passengers, and having coaled pushed on for Hobart at noon next day, and experienced moderate N and WSW winds and fine weather throughout the passage to Hobart, which was reached at noon on 15th September. There was a good deal of heavy cargo to land, and the Steamer did not leave for Wellington until 5.5 pm on the 16th. Met with NW to SW winds, with showers, across the Tasman Sea, passed Farewell Spit at 8.18 am yesterday, and arrived in harbour at 4.57 pm.

At Capetown 144 passengers were landed and 30 taken on board, while 35 disembarked at Hobart.

Indifferent steaming coal was partly responsible for the vessel making slightly longer time than on previous occasions.

Throughout a fine and uneventful voyage amusements of all kinds were organised, on a liberal scale, the officers and passengers giving valued aid in making the entertainments enjoyable and successful.

There is only one change in the deck officers' staff since the Gothic last visited Wellington, Mr. Jackson, fourth officer, having replaced Mr. Cleaver.

The Gothic sails on Tuesday for Lyttelton. She comes back to Wellington, which is to be her port of departure from the colony, on a date not yet definitely decided.
