After my father's death in 1933, with the Great Depression being in full bloom, my mother started traveling (with me in tow) in search of work, as did 1/4 of the working force of the United States at that time. Our travels took us to various locations in Arizona, Texas, and New Mexico, finally ending up in Albuquerque, NM, where I started school. We lived in Albuquerque for a while, then started west, still in search of work, ending up in Los Angeles, CA. I stayed in Los Angeles until my mother died, when I went to live with her sister, Alverta Jacobs Tribble,  and her family in Chickamauga, Georgia. I graduated from Rossville High School in Rossville, GA, then moved to Chattanooga, TN to live with my father's sister, Catherine Guille Everhart, and her family.

I joined the U.S. Navy in 1948, and served in the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVB-42) as an Electronics Technician. Later, I was accepted as a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD., and, after graduating in 1955, served in various ships and duty stations until I retired in 1982. Upon retirement from the Navy, I went to work for Rockwell International in Anaheim, CA and Crystal City, VA, retiring from there in 1994.
