"Howard E. Sloyer Dies Suddenly" text: "Stricken suddenly in his doctor's office, Howard Edward Sloyer, a member of the Bank of California staff for 28 years, died Wednesday at the age of 46. A teller for many years, Mr. Sloyer was widely known to many bank patrons and Tacoma business folk. Only recently he had been promoted to head of the cash item department. He was born in St. Joseph, Mo., and came to Tacoma in 1918 with his mother and sister to join his father and brother here. After attending Lincoln high school, he started work for the Bank of California and shortly before his death had completed 28 years' of service. Mr. Sloyer was a member of the Church of the Holy Communion and the American Institute of Banking. He is survived by his wife, Edith; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Norris and Mrs. Joe Malovich of Tacoma; a stepson, Delman H. Johnson of Long Beach, Calif.; his mother, Mrs. Lottie J. Sloyer, a sister, Helen S., a brother, A. W. Sloyer Sr., and a grandson, Thomas Norris, all of Tacoma. The Piper funeral home will announce the services." ******

Willard J. SLOYER

A lifetime resident of Lyon County. Willard J. SLOYER, 1408 Lawrence St., died this morning, May 22, at Newman Hospital. He was employed by Kansas Power and Light as a sub-station inspector for more than 39 years before his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church, Emporia Lodge 12, A.F. and A.M., and Miriam Chapter 14 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

A service in the Roberts-Blue Funeral Home will be held Tuesday at 10:30 A.M., conducted by the Rev. Theodore A. INMAN. A graveside service at Memorial Lawn Cemetery will be conducted by members of the Masonic Lodge.

Memorial contributions to the elevator fund at the Grace United Methodist Church may be sent in care of the church or the funeral home.

Mr. SLOYER was the son of the late William D. and Maude KILLIAN SLOYER. He was born in rural Lyon County, March 7, 1911, and was married to Buelah A. DICKASON on Nov. 22, 1941. he was preceded in death by two sisters Bernice SLOYER and Velma HARLAN.

Survivors are one son, William D. SLOYER of Grand Lake, Colo.; a daughter, Jan MOREY, 1026 Woodland St., and two grandchildren, Daren and Travis MOREY.

Mrs. Sloyer was a homemaker and had worked at Sellers Jewelry, Montgomery Ward and Reeble's Grocery Store.
She was born Feb. 1, 1911, in Hartford, the daughter of Jacob J. and Anna M. Pinson Dickason.
Mrs. Sloyer was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Emporia, Miriam Chapter No. 14, the Rebekah Lodge of Emporia and was an honorary member of the Emporia Womens Golf Association.
She married Willard J. Sloyer Nov. 22, 1941, in Emporia. He preceded her in death on May 22, 1981.
Survivors include a daughter, Jan Morey, Emporia; a son, Bill Sloyer, Emporia; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home in Emporia. Interment will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Emporia. Eastern Star Services will be conducted by Miriam Chapter No. 14, Order of the Eastern Star. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Hand In Hand Hospice or the Grace United Methodist Church and sent in care of the funeral home.

ALLEN - News has been received of the death Sunday of Melvin Everett SLOYER of Topeka, a former resident of the Admire-Allen area and a brother of Mrs. S.L. SCHIESSER. Mr. SLOYER, an electrical foreman at the Amtrack shops in Topeka, died after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was born Jan. 28th, 1917, in Admire, graduated in 1934 from the Allen High School, and was married to Bertha E. SPIKER on April 9th, 1939, in Topeka. He had been employed by the Santa Fe Railroad since September, 1942, and he lived in Topeka for 40 years. He is survived by two sons, Capt. Wayne E. SLOYER, Alconbury, England, and Donald E. SLOYER of Topeka; and two sisters, Doris BLANKENSHIP, of Topeka, and Mrs. SCHIESSER of Allen.

OVERLAND PARK- Lieutenant Colonel Wayne Sloyer (USAF Ret.) passed away in Overland Park, KS on March 24, 2008 at the age of 63. Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 27, at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf, Overland Park, KS. In lieu of flowers family requests contributions be made to the Atonement Lutheran Church for Mexico Mission.

Born November 24, 1944 in Topeka, KS he was the son of Melvin and Bertha Sloyer. He attended Topeka Lutheran School and graduated from Topeka High School in 1962. In 1966, he earned his Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Washburn University, where he was also a member of Alpha Delta fraternity and active in the Arnold Air Society. Growing up in Topeka he lived in the Oakland area and attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church. Wayne married Peggy Elsasser on July 9, 1966 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Topeka, Kansas.

Mr. Sloyer was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force in 1966 and served until 1991. Throughout his 25 year career he served as C141 Navigator, RF4C Pilot and achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel. He received the following medals during his military career; Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal (3 OLC), Air Medal (12 OLC), Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award (3 OLC), Air Force Organizational Excellence Award, Combat Readiness Medal and National Defense Service Metal.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1991, Wayne worked part time for America West Airlines as a Reservation Agent. He and Peggy enjoyed a lifetime of world travel, living in Korea, England, Hawaii and many other U.S. states. Spectator sports and playing bridge were some of his passions. He was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church for 15 years and loved serving on an usher team there for many years. He also took pleasure in his membership with the Empty Nesters Social Group and Neighborhood Dine Out Group.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Peggy; brother, Don Sloyer (Gail); brother-in-law, Steve Elsasser (Sue); sister-in-law, Sherry Hodnefield (John); nieces and nephews, Matt Sloyer (Stephanie), Avery Sloyer, Jeff Sloyer (Shanna), Leslie Elsasser, Pete Elsasser, Brad Hodnefield (Brooke) and Becky Hodnefield. Wayne valued his family and friendships, staying in contact with many friends and family members throughout his life.
