INTRODUCTION

Prepared for the Internet by Elizabeth de Stermich, granddaughter of Joseph Hugh Cooke LL. D.

I have left the original spelling and language of the time that this book was written, and have arranged the pages in an orderly fashion. In order to duplicate the original format would have resulted in many pages with very little information on each.

 PREFACE

THE end of the Great War (1914-1919), in which Shillingstone distinguished itself by taking the first place among the villages of a population exceeding 100 in the United Kingdom for the number of men who went voluntarily to the War, is a fitting moment for publishing a short history of what is known of the village. The Editor desires to thank the following persons who have contributed information:—Mr. George S. Fry, O.B.E., Vice-President of the Society of Dorset Men in London; (though born in London, Mr. Fry belongs to a family whose name appears most frequently in the parish registers. His researches have enabled him to correct errors which have crept into Hutchin's (Classic History of Dorset); Mr. Frank Dayman, the only surviving member of the family of the .Rev. Canon Dayman, lately Rector of the parish; the Rev. A. C. Almack, M.A., Rector of Blandford St. Mary. Sir Basil Thomson, K.C.B., who has written the opening chapter.  Mr. A. Holland has given valuable help in preparing the manuscript for the press.
