- all that we knew
Dr. Rufus Wilie Peacock was my great great grandfather on my father's father's side. My family knew little about my grandfather's family since he lost his parents at an early age. But we did have some information on Dr. Peacock, his grandfather, so I decided to try to get to the Horton side through the Peacocks, and began my Internet research in May 1999. The extent of our knowledge about Dr. Peacock was this: According to oral tradition, he served as a surgeon for the north in the Civil War. He later moved to and practiced in Jersey City, N.J. He was remarried to Ann Martha McCullough (known to my father's family as Grandma Hatie), who was from the South and once, supposedly in a newspaper article long lost, called "the Belle of Memphis." We have this deteriorating painting of Dr. Peacock (on the left) and a copy of a medical degree, in Latin, showing graduation in 1875. His daughter, my great grandmother, was Mignonette, (also known as Nettie) Peacock. She married a man named Horton. We didn't know his first name. My grandfather was named Rufus Wiley Horton after his grandfather. His father died (killed in a railroad accident, according to one story) or left (according to another) around the time of young Rufus' birth. His mother Nettie died when my grandfather was eight years old. His grandparents cared for him for a while, after which he was sent to live with Mary Wetzel in Oxford Depot, N.Y. . |
