Isaac & Alsey (Reynolds) Darland
Isaac was born on November 12, 1798 in northern Kentucky. He was the son of Lambert Darland and Martha Van Arsdalen.
(Last name of Van Arsdalen may have been spelled as Vanosdol, Van
Arsdol, Vanarsdal, Vanarsdalen, Thenosdol, Thernosdol, or Fernosdol, as
spellings of names change over time.) Alsey Reynolds was born on May
20, 1798, daughter of William Reynolds of South Carolina, and
granddaughter of Thomas Reynolds of Highland, Scotland. Alsey's
mother's name is unknown, but she was of Irish descent. Alsey's sister,
Rebecca, married Isaac's brother, Abraham. In 1821 they moved with several
other families from the area to Parke, County Indiana. According to
"The Early History of Green Township, Parke County, Indiana" - "They
came in the fall and settled on the bank of the Little Raccoon River,
south of the railroad crossing at Guion. Theirs was the first
settlement in the township, and entered into work of felling timbers
and erecting cabins in the wilderness, and the first one finished was
that of Abraham Durlin's to give these pioneers shelter from the cold
and storms of winter." There were twelve families in this group and
times were hard, and they had little money for the grain needed. There
were no roads, only paths beaten through the wilderness by wild
animals, but they stayed to raise a family and to farm the land. Isaac died on August 11, 1839.
