Lambert & Martha (Van Arsdalen) Darland
Lambert was born in April of 1763 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Johannis Darland
and Catherine Van Arsdalen. Lambert was also known as Lemmy. He
was moved with his family to what is now Harrodsburg, Mercer County,
Kentucky shortly after his birth. In 1782 he served in Capt. Richard
Chenowith's company, of Jefferson County, in Col. John Floyd's Co.,
under the command of Gen. George Rogers Clark, building Ft. Nelson, and
campaigned against the Indians along the Ohio River. Lambert moved to
the Beech Woods of Bruin's Crossroads, Guin. R.R., in 1821, accompanied
by sons Abraham and Isaac & a group of 12 families. They crossed at
the West Bank of the Little Raccoon River, Greene Township, Parke
County, Indiana. Lambert was possibly a member of 5th PA
Battalion.
Notes also indicate that Lambert Darland (1763-1852)
may have served as a private in Capt. Nathaniel Vansandt's Company -
Col. Robert Magaw's 5th PA. Battalion and was taken prisoner at Ft.
Washington, 1776.
Lambert my have taken his mother and twin sisters back to her people in
New Jersey, and there married Martha Van Arsdalen (Last
name of Van Arsdalen may have been spelled as Vanosdol, Van Arsdol,
Vanarsdal, Vanarsdalen, Thenosdol, Thernosdol, or Fernosdol, as
spellings of names change over time.) In 1827 Lambert sold all his
holdings in Kentucky and left for Parke, Indiana. where he joined his
sons, Abraham & Isaac. Martha died in 1827, but it is not known if
she was in Kentucky or Indiana. Martha Bargar of Oskaloosa, Iowa was
able to get a copy of the deeds for land bought by the Darlands in
1820's in Indiana. Lambert purchased 80 acres in 1825 and another
160 in 1828, all in Parke County, Indiana. Then in 1835 he returned to
Anderson County, Kentucky where he married Mary Carter on April
15. They evidently returned to Indiana to live. In April of 1846 a deed
was drawn up in Parke County in which Lambert leaves everything he owns
to his grandson Lambert Jr. with understanding that the latter will
provide and care for him and his wife Mary. Lambert died there in 1852. Lambert is buried in the Todd Cemetery, Greene Twp., Parke Co., Indiana at SW 1/4, SW 1/4.
