Newton & Addie (Riggs) Darland

Newton Jasper Darland was the son of James Berry Darland and Mary Charles. He was born on June 5, 1857 near Union Mills, Mahaska County, Iowa and he died January 24, 1943 at the age of 90 years, 7 months and 19 days. He married Addie Iowa Riggs on August 7,  1881. Addie was the daughter of Tracy Riggs and Phoebe Carver. She was born near Union Mills, Mahaska County, Iowa on February 28, 1864 and died and January 11, 1929 at age 64. Both are buried in Union Mills Cemetery. Newton spent most of his life farming in Mahaska County, Iowa. He enjoyed the outdoors and spent much of his time hunting, fishing, and trapping. He liked watermelon and strawberries for his birthday and family reunion. He always enjoyed a good prank. He was a 50 year mason and member of the Union Mills Christian Church. He was found dead at a rabbit trap in Montezuma, Iowa. Services were healed by Rev. Holmes and Rev. Hadley.
