Notes for Frederick Tracy DENT
Gen. Frederick Tracy Dent married Helen Louise Lynde in 1852 and had three childern. He was eldest son of Col.Frederick Dent and was a classmate to General Ulysses S. Grant ( President of the United States) at West Point. After their class graduated, Frederick and the young Grant came home to visit the Dents in St.Louis,Missouri, where Ulysses met and fell in love with Frederick's sister, Miss Julia Boggs Dent. Frederick was appointed 2nd Lieut. 1843 and assigned to the 6th Inf. United States Army serving in the Indian Territory. He also served in the battles of Vercruz, San Antion, Contreas, Churbusto and Molin Del Ray, during the Mexican War. Frederick later served on the Pacific Rail Road Survey, the Yakima and Spokane Expeditions and various Indian campaigns in the Northwest. He commanded a Regiment in the Army of the Potomac during the Civil War. He was Aid-De-Camp to Lieut.Gen.Grant, was part of the Richmond campaign and military commander of the city of Richmond. Frederick commanded the garrision in Washuington D.C. 1865. He was again Aid-De-Camp and Secretary to President Grant in his 1st term. For his gallant and meritorious service during the Civil War, Frederick was brevetted Brigadier General U.S. Army and Volunteers. Gen.Dent retired after fourty years of service in 1893. Ref.
