Generation No. 1

1. THEOPHILUS2 TAYLOR (UNKNOWN1) was born 1759 in Virginia, and died October 05, 1845 in Franklin County, Georgia Buried in Carnes Cemetary Tocca, Georgia. He married (1) VIRGINA CLINKSCALES. She died 1843 in Buried in Carnes Cemetary Tocca, Georgia.

Notes for THEOPHILUS TAYLOR:

There is an early story stating that the first we hear regarding the Taylor Family is that "Theopheus Taylor and a Mr Keller came across from England". This would have been the father of Theophilus (or Theophus, alternate spelling) if the story is correct.

by Jane Taylor

Theophilus Taylor was born in 1759 in Virginia. At an early age he moved with his family to North Carolina. In January, 1779, he was living in Montgomery County, North Carolinam where he was drafted for three months service in the Revolution. During this tour he served under Captain Pawns and Colonel Childs. He was first marched from Montgomery County to Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) to assist General Blufort's wounded men. Then his company marched to Massy Ferry on the Pee Dee River where they remained some time guarding the Ferry. From there they marched to Rockingham Mills where he remained until Colonel Thomas Wade took command of the company and marched them down to Betty's Bridge on Drowning Creek where they had a severe engagement with Hector McNeill who was commander of the Tories and British. After the fight was over they marched back to Kimbry near Massy Ferry, where Theophilus was stationed until his time was out and was discharged.

Theophilus then moved to Anson County, North Carolina where he was again drafted for an eighteen month tour under Captain Theophilus Webb and Colonel Lacey. He was ordered to Charleston, South Carolina and marched within forty miles of the city. He was stationed at what was called Four Holes, where he remained until his time was out and received a printed discharge from General Poak.

Following his second dischargem Theophilus returned to Anson County, North Carolina where he lived about five years. Approximately 1786 he moved to Cheraw District (Chesterfield County, South Carolina) and lived there eighteen years where he raised his family.

The family moved to Franklin County, Georgia around 1805, where they purchased land from Jeremiah and Leah Taylor on the North Fork of the Broad River (adjoining Tate and Dunagan), April 18, 1806. Theophilus and his wife lived on this property (now Stephens County, Georgia) the remaining years of their lives. Theophilus served as First Lieutenant in the local militia district from 1825-1929.

On June 5, 1845, Theophilus Taylor deeded the land on which he lived to (blind) Stephen Taylor of Habersham County, Georgia, and Henry F. L. Taylor of DeKalb County, Alabama for natural love and affection of his grandsons. Theophilus died October 5, 1845 and his wife died about 1843. They are buried in Carnes Creek Cemetery near Toccoa, Georgia. His estate was administered and settled on August 7, 1855 by Jeptha W. and Jeremiah E. Taylor of Forsyth County, Georgia.

William raised his family on the Broad River in a "wedged" log house with a high broad fireplace and rock chimney. Habersham County deeds indicate that he sold his Rocky Creek property in 1825, located on the side of the Tugalo River and bounded by John Brown on the East, William Eddins on the North, and by Gabriel Smith on the South and purchased land on the North Fork of the Broad River in Habersham County near his father. Also during this period he drew land in the 1820 Lottery in Irwin County and served on a Franklin County jury with Theophilus Taylor Jr, and Jeremiah Taylor.

William having a son blind from infancy and losing his own sight in his old age, provided for Stephen's security by deeding him 100 acres on the North Fork of the Broad River adjoining the homeplace of Theophilus Taylor.

William died in 1867. Frances died prior to the 1860 Census. They are buried in the Carnes Creek Cemetery in Stephens County Georgia.

John Taylor died Feb 19, 1893, before the pension was allowed; however, under the Act of 1855, he had received 120 acres from the State by Bounty Land Warrant Number 78447.

Notes for JEREMIAH MARTIN TAYLOR:

Jeremiah Martin "Jerry" Taylor, son of William and Frances Gazzaway Taylor and grandson of Revolutioner Theophilus Taylor, was born December 19, 1827 in Habersham (now Stephens) County, Georgia and was raised on the North Fork of the Broad River. In the mid 1840's, following the removal of the Cherokees, he and two brothers, John and Andrew Jackson, all in their 20's, left home and migrated to what is now Towns County where they settled in the Owl Creek Community. Jeremiah went to General James R Wyly, a family friend from Habersham County, for advice and counsil. General Wyly, an influential man with large property and slave holdings, permitted him to live on his land until he was financially able to buy his own land.

On the first Tuesday in December 1848, 13 interest in Lot 293 of the 18th District was "knocked off to Jeremiah Taylor before the courthouse door in Blairsville at the price of $15.00, he being the highest bidder." On March 12, 1851, he purchased the remaining 23 interest for $150, making a total of 160 acres. The lot had originally been drawn in the Cherokee Land Lottery by Arthur C Perry's orphans of Twiggs County, Georgia. Matthew Wright, Attorney, handled the sale. Since there was no safe way to send money through the mail, Jeremiah Taylor was advised to cut the bills in half and send them in separate mail runs, which he did and secured the land.

The home on Owl Creek in which Jeremiah Taylor raised his family was a dog-trot style log house wedged by dovetail notches. The large living room had puncheon board floors and a 6' broad rock fireplace with soapstone hearth and trim. The breezeway separated the living area from the kitchen, which was in the back, and the entire structure was covered by the sleeping loft.

On October 25, 1846, he married Nancy Gilbert, daughter of John and Elizabeth Ray Gilbert, who had moved from Wilkes County, North Carolina. They had seven children prior to Jeremiah enlisting in the service during the Civil War. Their names were Harvey Pinson, Adaline, William Gilbert, Sarah Ann, Mary Jane (died young), John Willborn, and Josephine (died young).

Roused by the spirit of the times, Jeremiah enlisted February 9, 1863 in Company A, 6th Georgia Cavalry and rode under the command of Colonel John R Hart in A J Iverson's Brigade under Brig. General John Pegram, commander of the Calvary Division, CSA. During his Civil War tour, Jeremiah and his company rode the grounds from Cumberland Gap, Tennessee to Chickamauga, Georgia and were involved in numerous skirmishes. During the Chickamauga Campaign the 6th Georgia Calvary saw action at: Leet's Tan-Yard against Wilder's Lightning Brigade of mounted infantry, Reed's Saw Mill on the memorable field of the Chickamaug; Missionary Ridge against Colonel Minty's mounted infantry- part of Rosencrans Army; Chattanooga and Hiawassee Road against the 59th Ohio infantry; and skirmishes at Pea Vine Creek against the 1st Kentucky Infantry.

During the Chickamauga Campaigns, Jeremiah was "...wounded in the right hand from firing guns. His hand became feverent, infected, and stiffened all his fingers to the point his hand was rendered essentially and substantially useless." The infection also created chronic complications which further hindered him from performing the required tasks of the Calvary. In July 1864, Jeremiah Martin Taylor was honorably discharged for the wound he received and subsequently received a monthly pension of $25/$30 during his and his widow's aging years respectively.

Returning home to Owl Creek, he resumed his life of farming and providing for his family, yet the impressions of the war remained with him to the extent that he named his next child Robert E Lee Taylor. The last child of Jeremiah and Mary Gilbert Taylor was Georgia Lou Taylor, born July 26, 1867.

Only four years after the birth of Georgia Lou, Mary Gilbert Taylor, at age 43, died (August 22, 1871) and was buried in Mt Zion Cemetery.

Following Mary's death, Jeremiah married Delilah, the daughter of Silas Crow and the widow of Bryam Marshall Lloyd, August 29, 1872. They had two children: Benjamin Hill Taylor and Alfred Taylor.

Jeremiah Martin Taylor's principal livelihood and support for his family was farming. In addition to his first land, he accumulated lots 294, 291, and part of 286 in the 18th District of Towns County. Maintaining and cultivating over 300 acres, he used the remaining land as investments for selling the timber and mineral rights. Life on the farm demanded hard labor, family cooperation, and the use of oxen, mules, and horses for working the soil. It was recorded in the 1850's that Jeremiah was given "a certain yoke of oxen of a dim or brindle color with a white face, each ablout 3 years old" for a $28 debt owed by Charles T Smith, which no doubt helped in its own small way the chores of farming the land.

Jeremiah M Taylor was also a stock raiser, a blacksmith and mechanic, a nurseryman-growing fruit trees, and musician-able to play the Vl'lin at will. Being a respected member of the community, he served as a Justice of the Peace of G M District 1243, a Commissioner of the Unicoy Turnpike and as Clerk of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church of Soapstone Gap until so many people moved out that it was dissolved and merged with Mt Zion in the 1880's.

Leaving his homestead to his wife and dispersing his property to his ten remaining children, Jeremiah M Taylor died August 7, 1904 and was buried in Mt Zion Cemetery beside his first wife, Mary Gilbert Taylor, and after having dwelled in his adopted mountain homeland for 69 years. Delilah Crow Lloyd Taylor died July 10, 1936 and was also buried in Mt Zion Cemetery.

He married SARAH LAVETA TURNER November 14, 1894 in Fruita, Mesa County, Colorado, daughter of NATHAN TURNER and CATHERINE PICKLE. She died February 19, 1940 in Colorado.

Notes for ANDREW J. TAYLOR:

I have little information on Grandfather except he was a very nice person, and was well liked. My mother, Josephine Taylor Beck, told me that the Indians knew him as the man who roped cattle left handed.

They lived on or near the Indian Reservation near Cisco, Utah after he and Sarah Turner were married. They moved the cattle over Glade Park to the ranch in the Unaweep Canyon while the Indians were still around. He probably came to Colorado by covered wagons with cattle, from what I remember my mother saying.

The Taylor Ranch, upon which he lived for about 30 years was one of the first to be developed in the Unaweep Canyon, and was a landmark of the canyon, which was shown on maps. It is located 15 miles from Whitewater, and was where they engaged in the cattle business.

He was a charter member of the Grand Junction Elks Lodge. He died of diabetes while at the St Mary's Hospital at the age of 66 years of age.

By Dean Bryan Beck, Grandson

The following is an article from "The Daily Sentinal" which details life in Unaweep Canyon, the location of the Taylor Ranch, in the early days. It is sometimes difficult to appreciate and understand the lives of people without some insight into their environment. I found the article very descriptive as it discusses the delivery of mail and other "trials" in the Unaweep Canyon of Colorado.

UNAWEEP CANYON

WHITEWATER TO GATEWAY ROUTE WAS TERROR FOR EARLY DAY MAIL CARRIER

BY ALICE WRIGHT, SENTINEL STAFF WRITER

OCTOBER 27, 1974

Unaweep Canyon's placid ranches strung at neighborly intervals along a paved highway are notable nowadays for the beauty of their setting between towering granite cliffs.

When Edward Martin contracted to carry the mail from Whitewater to Gateway in 1914, each ranch was a landmark measuring his team's labored progress along the canyon's 50-mile length.

For 20 yearsm he and his growing son, Ernest, delivered mail, hauled freight and passengers, acted as errand boy and messenger for friends who lived in those ranch houses.

During many a snowbound winter, the Martins were virtually the only human link between eagerly welcomed and anxiously watched as he "hack" sled or mount faded into a ground blizzard or disappeared behind a snowdrift.

Driving the canyon on a recent summer Sunday, Ernest Martin, now living in Escondido, California, and his sister, Dorothy Martin Tindall, of 274 Road 28 1/2, could still visualiza a distant roof as a promise of shelter against the threat of freezing, or a barn where fresh water and cool shade awaited teams exhausted by pulling a loaded wagon over Nine Mile Hill. For four years, teams were the only means of motive power.

Revenue from the mail contract alone was insufficient to justify the investment in horses and equipment. The profit was in freight, merchandise and supplies for the ranches and the Gateway miners. Occasional passengers added to the income but not much. In the wagon days, the fare was $1.00. It gradually inched upward to $2.00 and finally $3.00.

Envelopes the Martins picked up at the roadside mail boxes were frequently addressed to Montgomery Ward or Sears Roebuck. A couple of trips later, the packed goods would show up at the Post Office- mostly necessities to keep the ranch functioning- tools and hardware, household equipment, and clothing.

The ranches were almost self-sustaining. Grocery lists entrusted to the Martins were mostly sugar, coffee, and matches. They were left at the Whitewater store to be packed and picked up the next day. More frequent were small errands, a spool of thread or a package of needles.

A common errand took the Martins to the cobbler's shop, bringing boots and shoes for resoling. No leather was tough enough to resist the canyon's rocky terrain for long. The fee for this service varied with distance, measured against the standard 35 cents for a full roundtrip to Gateway. It included door-to-door pickup and delivery at either end of the line.

When winter was prolonged, rancher's pantries were apt to run low on provisions, but these coincided with the times that snow was deep, and heavy loads least desirable. The Martin's willingness to accomodate their patrons was understandably weakened. Cupboard had to be literally bare before they'd agree to haul a load of groceries, and it had better be necessities only.

The hack they used was a heavy-duty spring wagon, amply supplied with blankets at all seasons. They were useful against cold, or when showers marred the canyon's generally pleasant weather. In winter, hot rocks helped thaw frostbitten toes.

Blankets and rocks were the only concessions to comfort, for driver and passengers alike. The hack had no cover, nor did Martin's first motor vehicle, a Model T truck acquired in 1918 from a Mr Willey who won the mail contract briefly. He soon found he could not survive on mail alone.

Passengers were responsible for their own lunch- a sandwich carried in a pocket. There was no time to stop for a meal.

Martin took over the mail contract as a sideline, a means of supplementing the income he earned by farming and carpentry. He well knew what he was getting into for he'd already built Gateway's first school.

Headquarters for the business was the Martin ranch, a 40 acre spread west of Whitewater on the old Delta-Grand Junction road. In the earliest days, the hack picked up the mail at the Whitewater Post Office. In 1920, the terminal was moveed to Grand Junction, adding long miles to the trip.

First stop on the route was the Wadlow Ranch, across the railroad and the Gunnison from Whitewater. Even that wasn't always easy to reach. Bottom lands occasionally flooded in spring, and once in June 1921. the water was so deep that Martin left his rig at the ranch, ferrying the mail across the pond.

entering the canyon, the road crossed East Creek on a bridge supported by pilings which are still there. Just beyond, it began the climb up Nine Mile Hill, named for the distance to the crest.

The canyon's floor was open to horse and foot traffic for about a mile, at least to those agile enough to pick a path through the boulders littering the creek bed. Quite a few people did. The attraction was a splendid picnic spot. It was a favorite for the end-of-school outing.

Nine Mile Hill was an endurance test for teams and motors alike. Nearing the summit, the grade was 18 per cent. Passengers were asked to alight and walk over the top. From that point the road was partially hidden by the cliff's curve, somebody had to walk ahead to make certain the traffic had begun the long climb uphill. There was no room for passing on that shelf.

The descent into the canyon was literally a drop into the Lurvey Ranch, 13 miles and two hours travel time from Whitewater with good weather and good luck. The reverse trip was particularly troublesome during the vanadium boom of 1918.

Martin had contracted to haul the vanadium-radium or out of the Uravan country, across Outlaw Mesa and Cactus Park, then through the canyon to the railhead at Whitewater. On the strength of a strong government market, he invested in two heavy wagons and a number of sturdy teams.

Two teams could tow both wagons to the bottom of Nine Mile Hill. Here one was detached to wait until the first could be hauled over the top. For every trip, the horses crossed that wicked grade four times.

The 1918 boom burst depressingly soon. Better ore was discovered in the Belgian Congo and "Dad lost his shirt." The Nine Mile Hill remained a bugbear until the canyon road was completed in the 1930's.

Lurvey's was the first of three relay stations. Fresh teams waited at all three, harnessed so there would be no delay. Teams changed again at the Casement Ranch, on the Divide, and the Silzell Ranch, only 17 miles out of Gateway. Beyond Lurvey's. the first mailbox belonged to the Earl Grant Ranch. Next came the Copper City school house, the last relic of a town which once had a thousand or so residents. Their cabins had sprawled over a broad meadow long since planted to alfalfa. Little evidence remains to mark the locations of a series of mines high on the canyon walls, the source of Copper City's visions of great wealth.

At the Taylor Ranch, now the Weil Ranch, the road passes within feet of a shed built beside a fine spring of cold, clear water. The gate was hospitably open, a comfort to animal and human alike.

Just beyond the Taylor Homestead, the Divide Road takes off up the cliff side. It wasn't there until 1932, built for quick access to a granite quarry on top. Some of the tailings dumped over the side still cling to a shelf just below the rim, the last vestige of another dream born too soon. Without electric power and heavy equipment, stone blocks of transportable size were too small to suit masons in distant cities.

One of the canyon's tragedies occurred at the quarry point. John Holland, a Kannah Creek cattleman, went over the cliff in his car and was killed in the roll to the bottom. It happened in the early 30's, apparently an accident. Even so, his friends could not forget his grief for a lovely young wife who died in childbirth months later.

She had been Lela Woodring, the daughter of the Matt Woodrings who owned the ranch next above the Taylor's.

The Woodring home was another Martin-built structure. Several times Dorothy was a guest there for two or three days, pleased at an opportunity to visit Mrs Woodring whom she knew as a sister of a Whitewater neighbor, Mrs Mahannah.

From Woodrings to the Casement Ranch, also known as the Fall Creek Ranch, is a nine mile stretch without a single occupied house. The road followed the canyon's bottom, an engineering error which Martin kept hoping would be corrected.

When winter's winds piled snow in 20-foot drifts, he couldn't see the fence lines. Telephone wires strung on "quakies" were his only guidelines. Many of the saplings are still there, witnesses to the durability of aspen wood.

The long road has long since been moved to the sunny side of the canyon as Martin advocated.

When the road across the canyon's mid-section was closed by bad weather, Martin stashed his wheeled vehicles at the relay stations on either side, relying on a sled for the pull across the 7,000 foot divide. When melting snow created a quagmire, he rode a horse. Sometimes the going was so slow that he never got closer to home than the Lurvey Ranch. A cousin was hired to bring the mail that far.

It's original name, Fall Creek, was chosen for the proximity of a beautiful water fall on the canyon's north cliff, rarely seen by westbound travelers because of it being hidden behind a curve. Even castbound travelers don't see it much anymore. It once ran all year, now it's dry after midsummer. The Casement Ranch at Fall Creek was a well-kept spread notable for it's red and white painted buildings and the warm welcome awaiting travelers when the Dividing crossing was rough going.

Notes for SARAH LAVETA TURNER:

Sarah Laveta "Sallie" Turner Taylor was one of the true pioneers of the West, having come overland in a covered wagon when she was five years old. Her family drove their cattle ahead of them. A short time after they settled in Fremont County, Colorado, the snow piled to a depth of four feet and most of their livestock died.

She and Andrew Taylor ran cattle in Eastern Utah for several years, and moved their cattle to the Unaweep Canyon where they made their lives for 30 years. When her husband died in 1925, she moved from the ranch to the St Charles Hotel at 317 South 2nd in Grand Junction, Colorado, which she owned and gave the hotel to her daughter, Josephine Taylor Beck, as a life estate when she died.

She was affiliated with the Sunshine Chapter of the O.E.S., Grand Valley Chapter of the Rebekah, Women's Relief Corps, and was a member of the Episcopal faith.

She would be working in her kitchen at the Ranch and she would turn around to find a room full of Indians watching her work, and she didn't hear them come in! She nursed an Indian baby back to health, and the family wanted to give her the baby. If you saved a life, that life was yours. She said, "No", so the father left and came back with a deer as payment. These two stories were told by daughters Lillian and Josephine. She was a wonderful woman.

UNAWEEP TOWNS GONE WITHOUT A TRACE

BY J R KIRKPATRICK

There's no evidence that the towns ever existed. They can't be called ghost towns, because there is no remaining trace of either Pearl City or Copper City today. Yet their sites, along Colorado 141 between Whitewater and Gateway, have been verified by a pioneer lady who grew up in Copper City.

The towns, both settled in 1897, were tiny, with populations ranging from 75 to 100 persons. They were close neighbors, located only two miles apart alongside East Creek in Unaweep Canyon. Pearl City died in 1912, while Copper City survived another two years.

Fact 1: Buried at Blackwell Cemetary

Notes for NANCY MATILDA BRYAN:

Nancy Matilda Bryan, daughter of Martin and Martha Johnston Bryan, was born February 14, 1846 in Franklin (Hart) County, Georgia. Following the Civil War, she went on an extended visit to her aunt Agnes Johnson Rogers in Towns County, Georgia. Aunt Agnes' husband, Johnson C Rogers, and son-in-law, John H wike, both died during the Civil War and Nancy went to help, especially since there was sickness in the family.

Harvey Pinson "Harve" Taylor, son of Jeremiah Martin and Mary Gilbert Taylor, was born March 12, 1848 in Union (Towns) County, Georgia and grew up in the Owl Creek Community. He met Nancy Matilda Bryan at the home of a neighbor, Mrs Agnes Rogers. When Nancy Bryan ended her visit with her aunt and returned home to Hart County, Georgia, Harve Taylor soon went over the mountain to pay her a call. Married in 1869, they returned to Towns County- Nancy riding on the back of a mule and Harve leading it all the way.

They built a house near the Soapstone Gap, still known as the "Harve Plac," and farmed for a living. The property was rather mountainous and farming was difficult. At threshing time it took four yokes of oxen to pull the boiler and separator up to his fields in the mountain flats. the land was also very rocky, hence the rock piles and rock rows still on the property today.

Shortly after the turn of the century, Harve Taylor, advancing in age, decided he would do better to move to flatter land "down in Georgia' and grow cotton. He sold his Owl Creek property to his brother Benjamin H Taylor and moved to Blackwell community to Cobb County, Georgia. All of his children except Jeremiah M "Judd" moved with him.

As inscribed on her tombstone in Blackwell Cemetery, Nancy Taylor "crossed the troubled river" on February 16, 1911. After Nancy's death, Harve married Amanda Smith. Harve died February 28, 1915 and was buried beside Nancy.

39. WILLIAM GILBERT5 TAYLOR (JEREMIAH MARTIN4, WILLIAM3, THEOPHILUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born March 29, 1852 in Towns County, Georgia, and died November 11, 1933 in Towns County, Georgia. He married N JANE ROBERSON February 06, 1876 in Towns County, Georgia, daughter of WILLIAM ROBERSON and HARRIETT GREEN. She died March 23, 1914 in Towns County, Georgia.

Notes for WILLIAM GILBERT TAYLOR:

William Gilbert "Will" Taylor, third son of Civil War Veteran Jeremiah Martin Taylor and Mary Gilbert Taylor, was born and raised in the Owl Creek communtiy of Towns County, Georgia. Will was taught the ways of living off the land and no doubt had to apply his knowledge at an early age after his father returned from the Civil War with a wounded hand when Will was only eleven years old. When in his early twenties, William was engaged to one of his Owl Creek neighbors and on February 6, 1876 married N Jane Roberson, daughter of William and Harriett Green Roberson. The Honorable James P Goddard, JP performed the services.

Will and Jane lived in a dog-trot cabin adjoining his father's property next to Taylor's Branch where all seven of their children were born.

Will's primary occupation and livelihood was farming, hunting, and fishing and providing for his family. He owned 320 acres on Owl Creek, part of which he used for selling timber and mineral rights, and the other areas he used to cultivate corn sorghum, apples, and pears. Will was known as a steady, hard working farmer and had a strong affection for hunting and fishing. On occasions he would be working in the fields and when he took a notion to go fishing, he would leave his team to the plow, go and do his fishing, come back to the fields and take up where he left off.

Will was said to be an even natured man, a loyal Democrat and a Baptist. As a child he attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, at Soapstone Gap, and took his own children to Mt Zion Baptist Church. He was of medium build and wore a heavy mustache and although he never had much to say, he was 'a right neighborly sort of feller'. Will was also an industrious farmer and helped supply his friends and family with "Medicinal Corn Whiskey" by 'providing the neighborhood boys with all the corn they needed in return for half the drippings' that were brewed at the spring on Taylor's Branch.

Despite Will's good natured ways, his love for hunting, fishing and good honest work, his family was plagued with a series of tragedies. On March 23, 1914, he lost Jane, his wife; two years later his eldest daughter, Flora Taylor Hooper, died at the age of 35; then around 1917, his son Gordon who had been living in Colorado and Montana was killed, perhaps murdered after Will had wired him #200.00 in Butte, Montana. In 1933, Will Taylor, who had been in poor health for a few years, was found frozen to death early one Friday morning. He regularly visited his children Bynum and Gene at their homes and one cold November evening he left Gene's heading home where Frances, his unmarried daughter, lived and cared for him. He never returned home and was found the next morning, November 11, 1933, frozen to the ground next to Owl Creek presumably dying of a heart attact. Less than two years later Francesm the last surviving daughter, died of what folks said was the 'simple lack of will to live.' Eugene William Taylor, one of seven children was the only child of William and Jane to enjoy longevity.

William Gilbert Taylor and his wifee N Jane Roberson Taylor are buried side by side and surrounded by five of their children in the Mt Zion Cemetery, Hiawassee, Georgia.

He married ETHEL SANDERS November 10, 1901 in Towns County, Georgia, daughter of JOEL SANDERS and OMA LLOYD. She died August 17, 1960 in Towns County, Georgia.

Notes for BENJAMIN HILL TAYLOR:

Benjamin Hill Taylor, son of Jeremiah and Delilah Crow Lloyd Taylor, was born February 20, 1876 on Owl Creek in Towns county, Georgia. He married Ethel Sanders and they had seven children.

Ben lived on Owl Creek and worked as a blacksmith and a farmer. He made and repaire most of the tools used by himself and his neighbors. He also served as Justice of the Peace in his district for a number of years. Ben attended church and school in what he called the "little log house in the Soapstone Gap" where he learned the basics from the Blue Book Speller.

In the early 1940's Ben was stricken with crippling arthritis and eventually became bedfast. To pass the time he began writing essays and poems. Although he was in great pain and his hands gnarled, his penmanship was a beautiful script. The topics he chose to write about ranged from political commentaries ("Let's Swap the Jack Ass In") and humorous musings ("Who Made the First Cream Gravy") to family history ("The Taylor Race").

As stated in Ben's own words:

I can't do much

But read and write

And that's mostly what I do

From morn to night.

I read of the future, I write of the past

All summed up, but not much at last

But it keeps me busy, and my mind

content

And off the hardships I have underwent.

Ethel Sanders Taylor died August 17, 1960. Ben died December 1, 1961. They were members of Mt Zion Baptist Church where Ben once served as church clerk. They are buried in the church cemetery.

By Dean Bryan Beck, Nephew

THE FOLLOWING WAS WRITTEN BY LILLIAN TAYLOR FARMER MASSEY;

As I think back over my child days, I appreciate my parents more than ever. They had some rough times.

When they were first married, the country where they had to graze their cattle was in the Indian Region. Any way close. My mother would be busy baking bread or cooking and when she turned around the room would be filled with Indians sitting along the wall watching her cook. And she never heard a one come in.

They moved from there to the Unaweep Canyon where we were reared. We had a good home and lots to eat, but always had to work hard. I always had to milk 6 or 7 cows before going to school and walk 3/4 of a mile. Help with the haying and after it was stacked, weed the big garden. So I was raised to work and it never hurt me a bit. In fact, it prepared me for the hard knocks that we come to face with our life.

I look back on my life and I am grateful for my good child life of lots of freedom and happiness and, that a child can have growing up.

75. ALVA WHEELER6 TAYLOR (ANDREW J.5, JOHN4, WILLIAM3, THEOPHILUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born April 28, 1905 in Gunnison River, Mesa County Colorado, and died April 05, 1959 in Grand Jucntion Colorado. He married LOLA MAE SMITH March 29, 1928 in Delta County Colorado, daughter of WILLIAM SMITH and MARY MEDCALF.

Notes for ALVA WHEELER TAYLOR:

Alva Wheeler "Alvie" Taylor was a cattleman on the Taylor and Heskett ranches for many years, south of Whitewate, Colorado. A very hard working man with a great disposition. A very likable person who had no enemies, and was the best father and friend you could ever have in your life. His son Jerry, calls him the best friend he has ever known.

At the age of 54, he was thrown from his horse when fording the Gunnison River with his son, Jerry Taylor, and a herd of cattle, and it took several days for searchers to locate his body, which was found about 150 yards from the point where he was thrown from his horse. The rancher's horse apparently stepped into a hole or lost it's footing as Taylor forded the river while gathering cattle some 20 miles south of Grand Junction and several miles upstream from the Indian Rock Orchard Company Ranch. His son, Jerry, then 20 years of age, saw his father disappear in the water, and jumped in to find his father, but the older man was swept away. A friend of the family said Taylor couldn't swim. Other accounts stated he could. The riderless horse scrambled to safety.

A score of men in boats, horseback and on foot took part in the search which lasted for three days and continued in drenching rain. The body was discovered from a boat using a barbed wire grapple in a deep hole. It snagged on clothing about 10 feet below the surface of the water. Deputy Sheriff Earl Sawyer said many persons voluntarily helped out during the search period. Among these were members of the Colorado River Skippers with their boats, the Kannah Creek Cowbelles, ranchers, Game and Fish Department employees and Rio Grande Railroad crews. Two boats were taken to Whitewater and taken upstream by rail to the site. The boats belonged to Bill Jarvis and Mesa County. Skin divers were also used.

Alva Taylor was a lifelong resident of Unaweep Canyon Mesa. He attended schools in Unaweep and Grand Junction. Taylor operated a large ranch located about 14 miles up Unaweep Canyon which was first bought by his father, the late Andrew J Taylor, in the 1890's. It is one of the early ranches in the Unaweep and has large acreage both in the canyon and on the Uncompahgre forest.

He was a member of the National Cattlemen's Association, the Colorado Cattleman's Association, the Mesa County Farm Bureau and the Elk's Lodge. BPOE Lodge 575 was in charge of his funeral services. Reverend Earl Goss was officiating. Pall Bearers were George Lockhart, Vern Wood, Byrl Casto, Clyde Robinson, Frank Calhoun, and Bob Knox. Honorary Bearers were Jack Wadlow, Wes Devenney, E J Heskett, Charles Silzell, Jerome Craig, Joe Scales, Lawrence Mash, Sharon Billings, Raymond Woodring, and Ute Osborne.

At the services there was a bunch of cattle close by who were bawling. Son, Jerry, said that even the cows were crying at the loss of his father.

She married (1) EDWIN LORAINE BLANCHARD. She married (2) EDWIN ELLERY BECK September 02, 1926 in Grand Jucntion Colorado. He died March 18, 1968 in Flint, Genesse County, Michigan.

Notes for JOSEPHINE NAOMA TAYLOR:

Jo Taylor was a housewife who played the piano by ear, and would play dances and over radio station KFXJ in Grand Junction, Colorado, with husband Ed playing the alto saxophone. Her mother left the St Charles Hotel, located at 317 South 2nd St, Grand Junction, Colorado to Jo when she passed away in 1940. She was an easy touch for those in need.

She was beaten by a man who was drunk in the hotel, and the man was not prosecuted because of a slick lawyer.

She had a massive stroke which left her unable to speak, and she was in nursing homes until she died. She was a very caring person, who loved horses, people, music, and had a strong belief in God.

Her memorial services took place at St Martin's Chapel, Grand Junction, Colorado, on March 20, 1970, at 4:00 pm. Reverend Ronald R Hamilton officiated from the First United Methodist Church. Pall Bearers were Ross Unger, Ira Berry, Maurice Ford, Keith Moore, Arthur Gilbert, and Tom Toughridge.

Notes for DEAN BRYAN BECK:

Some Early Memories

The road into the Unaweep Canyon was quite a ride when I was small. It was a one way road where you got out of your car and honked your horn to see if anyone was coming down from the narrow one lane road built on the side of the mountain. I recall that there was one place for two cars to pass, and if someone was coming down the hill, the person who was going up had to back down. It was a real THRILLER. They later built the road close to the streambed and that was better, but a mess when you had a flash flood, and then the cars would be turned around and they would try to beat the wall of water to where it went into Whitewater.

They had a big party line from Whitewater to all the ranches in the Unaweep- 1 long and 2 short and you could be at a close ranch and get your phone call- but so could everyone else listen in to hear what was said. Many of the ranchers had places to live in Whitewater so the kids could go to school during the winter and know they would make it. In the canyon it was not too good a road in those days.

When Bynum passed away Lillie was left with the seven children. The youngest was three years old. In order to rear her children she and the older children worked long hours on the farm. For a number of years she also kept a grocery store located at the junction of Mill and Owl Creek Roads to supplement the farm income.

Lillie, daughter of Newton and Louisa Kendall Taylor, was born in Towns County on November 29, 1890. She had blue eyes, and black hair which she wore in a bun on the back of her head. She was a large woman weighing over 200 pounds. Lillie attended school at Mountain Scene and was a member of Mt Zion Baptist Church.

Living to be 84 years old, Lillie passed away February 22, 1975 and is buried in Mt Zion Cemetery near her husband.

Notes for BYNUM TAYLOR:

Bynum Taylor received his education in a log school house located on School House Branch on Owl Creek in Towns County. After serving in WW1, he married Lillie Taylor on December 19, 1920. He started his family in a log cabin constructed by himself, his father, and his neighbors.

Bynum was a handsome man of average build, with light brown hair, ruddy complexion and blue eyes. He had a pleasant personality. He wore overalls and chambray shirts, except on Sundays when he wore a blue serge suit. He was a member of Mt Zion Baptist Church, Mountain Scene, Ga, where he was organist most of the time. He loved to sing and enjoyed working with the children and teaching them what he knew about music. He was the Tenor Member of a quartet consisting of himself, his brother Eugene, John Turpin, and Boyd Underwood. At the time there were a lot of singing conventions which were a great pastime for them. Bynum also liked to play the fiddle and spent many hours playing for people who came by his home to listen to him play.

Bynum was stricken with an abscess in his hip joint in 1934. Dr Rice did surgery on his hip at home without anesthesia to lance the affected joint. He never fully recovered, and the following winter he developed pneumonia and passed away February 6, 1935. He was buried in the Mt Zion Church Cemetery.

109. JEREMIAH MARTIN6 TAYLOR (HARVEY PINSON5, JEREMIAH MARTIN4, WILLIAM3, THEOPHILUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born March 31, 1876 in Towns County, Ga, and died June 20, 1928 in Towns County, Ga. He married ROSA JANE NICHOLSON August 21, 1899 in Towns County, Ga, daughter of ANDREW NICHOLSON and VIRGINIA JAMESON. She was born December 23, 1879 in Fodder Creek, and died April 21, 1972.

Notes for JEREMIAH MARTIN TAYLOR:

Jeremiah Martin "Judd" Taylor, son of Harvey Pinson and Nancy Matilda Bryan Taylor, was born March 31, 1876 on Owl Creek where he grew up. Although the extent of his education was from the Blue Back Speller ar the "Little Log House in the Soapstone Gap," he was well read and regularly suscribed to the "Atlanta Contstitution". He served as postmaster of Hopeland, Georgia from 1900 to 1902. A member of the Fodder Creek Lodge (of the Farmer's Union) No 777, he served as president for a term. Joining Enotah Baptist Church in 1910, he later served as Sunday School Superintendent. Initiated in 1919, he also belonged to Unicoy Lodge No 259, Free and Accepted Masons.

J M Taylor is best remembered as a musician. At the age of 16, while working as a farm laborer in Tellico Plains, Tennessee, he learned shaped not music. Putting his talent and low booming bass voice to use, he served as chorister and organist at Enotah Baptist Church for many years. Competing at county singing conventions, the Enotah choir won the banner for eight consecutive years while he was head of the class. He also conducted singing schools throughout Towns and surrounding counties and composed a number of songs which appeared in the Gospel songbooks of the early 1900's.

Having "met in the settlement," J M and Rosa Jane Nicholson were married August 21, 1899. They set up housekeeping on Owl Creek but moved to Fodder Creek in 1902. In 1908 they moved to Lula, Georgia in Banks County. to work on a cotton farm. When their son Paul became sick, the doctor prescribed freestone water. They returned to Fodder Creek where they purchased 30 acres from Jane Alston, built a log house, resumed farming, and started an orchard. Apple, peach, pear, cherry. plum, quince, and apricot trees were cultivated. A monumental task was keeping the trees sprayed and usually required the muscle power of Paul, Pauline, and Mary to pump. Later strawberries and grapes were added to the orchard.

In 1923 a larger two-story house was built of oak and ceiled with pine from timber cut on the property by Marlor and Jack Galloway. Paul hauled the lumber to Hayesville where it was planed and grooved. Joe Kirby, Luther Hooper, and Arnold Woodring "raised" the house, and Ruth and Cora carried the shingles for the roof. The oak mantles framing the fireplaces were made by Ed McConnell.

Purchasing a new Model T in 1924, the Taylors were among the first owner of an automobile on Fodder Creek. They also were early subscribers to the Western Electric Telephone Company. Another telephone was installed in their house by Morris Brothers Lumber Company. It was connected to the tower on Bald Mountain and was used to spread the word about fires.

On June 20, 1928m J M Taylor died of a stroke. He was prepared for burial by Luther, John and Arvel Hooper. The casket was homemade and trimmed in black. An epidemic of measles having broken out previously at Luther Melton's funeral at which J M sang, the community was quarantined; therefore, Reverend Buice conducted the funeral service at home. The Masons conducted the graveside service at Enotah Cemetery.

Notes for ROSA JANE NICHOLSON:

Rosa Jane Nicholson Taylor, daughter of Andrew Absalom and Virginia Caroline Pope Jameson Nicholson, was born December 23, 1879 on Fodder Creek where she grew up, attended school, and joined Enotah Baptist Church. A good homemaker and manager, she excelled at spinning, weaving, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and sewing. Often people would bring her material and a picture from the catalog and she would copy the pattern. After her husband's death she continued to farm with the assistance of her children. A kind neighbor, whe knew many "recipes" for teas and poultices and always assisted whenever and wherever there was sickness in the community. A lady in the truest sense, Rosa was noted for her hospitality to all. Known as "Maw-maw" to her grandchildren, she trotted them many miles on her knees and chided them by saying, "Ah pshaw!"

Rosa lived her last days in the homes of her daughters. On April 21, 1972, after a long fight with cancer and diabetes, she died and was buried beside her husband in Enotah Cemetery.

Children of JEREMIAH TAYLOR and ROSA NICHOLSON are:

i. HOMER LEE7 TAYLOR, b. November 09, 1900, Towns County, Georgia; d. March 31, 1982, Hall County, Georgia.

Notes for HOMER LEE TAYLOR:

Born November 8, 1900, near Soapstone Gap on Owl Creek, Jeremiah Martin and Rosa Jane (Nicholson) Taylor's oldest child, Homer Lee, grew up on Fodder Creek which remained home to him all his life. Securing a sawmill job in nieghboring Habersham County and later working as a farm laborer, he set out on his own at the age of sixteen. Before traveling to Kissimmee, Florida, where he worked on a road construction job, he enrolled at Hiawassee High School in 1918. Returning to Fodder Creek in 1933 after having worked for a number of years in the copper mines at Fontana, North Carolina, he took over management of the family farm. Supplementing the farm income, he worked on various other jobs including Ritter's Lumber Company, relocating cemeteries when Chatugue Dam was built, as a driller at Fontana Dam, and road construction jobs including the road to Clayton in 1948. He was working for Floyd Saltz on a timber job at the head of the River in the early 1950's when Joel Abernathy returned from Walden, Colorado, boasting of the opportunities there- jobs paying as much as $30 a day! Deciding to seek his fortune in this land of opportunity, he headed west. Much to the dismay of his companions, Guy Taylor and Cline Garrett, he rarely exceded 40 MPH! Settling at Walden, Colorado, he worked first for the Michigan River Timber Company, but the majority of his work was with the North Park Timber Company. Retiring after 17 years of skidding logs, he returned home. Purchasing the old Fodder Creek School site, he built a comfortable, modern house.

Active in Masonic affairs for forty years, Homer belonged to Unicoy Lodge No 259, F&AM, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1953. He also belonged to Hiawassee Chapter # 305 Order of the Eastern Star. Professing faith at the age of fourteen, he joined Enotah Baptist Church. As a loyal Democrat he was active in the political affairs of the county. He was a prolific reader of mysteries and an avid sports fan- often listening to two ballgames simultaneously- one on the pick-up radio and one in the house. He loved to talk about olden times and was a wealth of information regarding the family's history.

Homer often said," When my time comes, I just want to move on out." This he did on March 31, 1982. Reflecting on Homer's baseball days. Reverend John F Moore eulogized him as "a man who played hard and who played fair." He was laid to rest beside his parents in Enotah Cemetery on Fodder Creek.

Lillie Pearl Taylor was born September 30, 1902, on Fodder Creek where she grew up and attended school. Furthering her education, she enrolled at Hiawassee High School. Taking the state teacher's examination, she earned a teaching certificate and began teaching in the public schools of the county in the 1920's. Two of her schools were Pine Grove and Upper Bell Creek.

Wearing a grown silk dress, which she had made, and a brown satin hat, Pearl was married on May 6, 1923 to Harve Gribble. They lived on Bell Creek and she cooked for logging camps.

On her own after 1929, Pearl worked for a short time at Timken Roller Bearing Company, Canton, Ohio. Moving to Enka, North Carolina, she worked at a rayon plant. Afterwards she worked at Bekin Mfg. Company and as a housekeeper in Swannanoa, North Carolina. Helping with the war effort, she worked at Union Carbide Company, Charlotte, North Carolina, making batteries during World War II. Before returning home to Fodder Creek in the early 1950's where she looked after the farm and raised broilers, she worked at a mercantile company in Atlanta, Georgia.

Joining Enotah Baptist Church at the age of twelve, Pearl remained an active member through the years. She sang in the church choir, assisted in Vacation Bible Schools, and participated in the annual drive to collect canned goods for the Georgia Baptist Children's Home. Pearl, an excellent cook, always prepared meals for singing conventions, homecomings, and family reunions. Her deliciously prepared Sunday dinners made the Taylor home a popular gathering place for gamily and friends on Sunday afternoons.

Active in community affairs, Pearl served as a Heart Fund Volunteer for many years. She was also a promoter of the Nicholson Family Reunion of which she served as secretary for a number of years. As one of the first and most popular exhibitors of the Georgia Mountain Fair, Pearl is well remembered for her quilting and expert needlework.

A very polite lady who enjoyed growing flowers, Pearl was always mindful of the rules of grammar and consistantly stressed correct English usage. She would say, "We LOVE our sweethearts and we LIKE tomatoes." A hard worker, she was frequently the only woman who came to cemetery workdays at Enotah Cemetery.

Although she had no children of her own, her neices and nephews held a special place in her heart, and she, in theirs.

In the late 1960's Pearl married David Gorman Kitchens, a widower, of Clay County, North Carolina. She moved to his home on Shooting Creek and there lived out the rest of her life. After a period of declining health she became a resident of Franklin, North Carolina nursing home. While a patient in Murphy Medical Center, Murphy, North Carolina, Pearl died on St Valentine's Day 1980. She was buried in the Shooting Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

110. LUCIUS QUINTUS CURTIS6 TAYLOR (HARVEY PINSON5, JEREMIAH MARTIN4, WILLIAM3, THEOPHILUS2, UNKNOWN1) was born November 20, 1879 in Towns County, Ga, and died March 03, 1951 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He married (1) BONNIE MCAFFEE 1904. He married (2) WILLIE H. BROWN 1920. He married (3) ANN EMMONS 1930 in Harlan County, Kentucky. She died January 27, 1956 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He married (4) EDDIS ANDERSON October 21, 1941 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She died January 15, 1979 in Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina.

Notes for LUCIUS QUINTUS CURTIS TAYLOR:

Lucius Quintus Curtis "Curt" Taylor, son of Harven Pinson and Nancy Matilda Bryan Taylor, was born November 20, 1879 on Owl Creek, Towns County, Georgia.

In 1904 he married Bonnie McAffee of Blairsville, Georgia. They had two sons, Reuben Randall, born 1905 of Atlanta, Georgia, and Charles, born 1906 of New York. The marriage was unsuccessful and neither parent was able to give the children the proper care and attention they needed and deserved so they were adopted by families that provided them with an array of opportunities and as a result both enjoyed successful social and career lives.

Having learned shaped note music from his brother "Judd" , Curt took to the road and traveled extensively throughout the southern and midwestern United States supporting himself and selling gospel songbooks. On occasions Curt appeared in and around Towns County, driving his little Willis, to visit, hold singing schools, and do business.

By 1909 Curt left Georgia and went West to be a cowboy. At Gail, Texas, a wealthy rancher found out that he could teach singing and had him give voice lessons to his three teen-age children. Here Curt was the principal of the West Texas Normal School of Music. In the teens he continued teaching music schools in Artesia, New Mexico, where he and D B Mills published "Joyous Praise". He also taught music schools in Amarillo, Texas, where he and J S Earp published "Melodies for Jesus."

By 1920 Curt was married in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ms Willie H Brown. However, Curt's travels, profession, and lifestyle were not complimentary with the demands of settled married life which resulted in another unsuccessful marriage.

In th 1930's Curt was living in Harlan County, Kentucky, where he met Ann Emmons who managed the boarding quarters and cooked for the Bennett Mine Company and later became his wife. While teaching singing schools in Southeastern Kentucky, Curt sang as lyric tenor with the Kentucky Yellow Jackets, billed as "the hottest thing this side of the equator" by George W Sebren in "Teh Sacred Singer", Asheville, North Carolina.

Curts fourth marriage was to Eddis Anderson of Bryson City, North Carolina. Besides Bryson City, they also lived at Gainesville, Georgia for a while. Their children were: Doran, Naomi Brenda Sue, Deems Theophilus, and Curtis Truman.

Curt also lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas, from 1943 until his death. He resided at 127 1/2 Central Avenue with his wifem Ann Emmons, who worked from 1940 until her death as chef at Park Hotel, Lewis B-B-Q, and The Flame Cafe. In Hot Springs he was a member of the First Assembly of God where he was a Sunday School teacher and a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Curt returned to his native Georgia in 1950 to conduct a round of singing schools in White and Hall Counties. While teaching a school at Chattahoochee Methodist Church near Helen, he was given the role of choirmaster in the movie, "I'd Climb The Highest Mountain."

Curt's relaince on his talents and wit was his primary occupation and livelihood. He was a colorful character, of tall stature with a dark complexion and attractive features. He was meticulously dressed and groomed regardless of the occasion. His voice took him many places, filled many rooms with a resounding tenor, and told tales that sparked the imagination and brought smitles to many.

At the age of 71, Curt developed cerebral arterio-sclerosis and after a life filled with music and travel died March 3, 1951 at St Joseph Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Five years later Ann Emmons Taylor died on January 27, 1956. They are buried side by side at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hot Springs, Arkansas.

He married CARRIE ADA BURCH December 24, 1911 in Towns County, Ga, daughter of MONIMER BURCH and LOUISA LEDFORD. She died June 19, 1973 in Towns County, Ga.

Notes for EUGENE WILLIAM TAYLOR:

Eugene William (Gene) Taylor, the second son of William Gilbert and N. Jane (Roberson) Taylor was born May 4, !879 and raised near Taylor's branch in the Owl Creek community of Towns County, Georgia. As a youth, Gene learned the mountian traditions handed down from previous generations of farming the land and maintaining self-sufficiency. Gene was educated at the Soapstone Gap Schoolhouse and learned the basics from the Blue Black Speller. By his teen years, his interest centered around mechanics, music, and travels, and by 1903, he had left his homelands for Oklahoma. During hs travels, he lived and worked as a farmer and ranch hand with his Uncle Lafayette Puett and his close friend L. R. Johnson.Gene also homesteaded a 620 acre track of land in Clayton, New Mexico which he sold before returning to North Georgia. In the last years of his westward adventures, Gene moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (1907) where he attended Draughon's Practical Business College.

Having returned to Town's County in the Spring of 1908, Gene first purchased 400 acres of land on Soapstone Gap for $400.00 which he later sold, and acquried 90 acres of land on Owl Creek from his father. This property, which adjoined his Uncle Ben Taylor, included a three-room split-log house that Gene renovated and lived in until the late 1930's.In the Autumn of 1908 Gene met " and sparked a well-turned lady" whom he knew from singins at Mountian Scene, Mt. Zion and Union Hill Churches. This lady would become his wife after a three year courtship. On Christmas Eve, 1911, Eugene married Carrie Ada Burch, the youngest daughter of Civil War Veteran Monimer Burch and Louisa (Ledford) Burch, leaders in the Methodist Episcopal Church and Republicans! Carrie's Uncle, Marshall Burch, J.P., performed the Holy Service of Matrimony.

Seven children were born to the Eugene Taylors as they lived in their Owl Creek home. Carrie and Gene taught their children the ways of the farm, yet made certain they recieved as much education as possible in Towns County. The family also faithfully attened the Mt. Zion Baptist Church on second Sundays and the Mountian Scene Methodist Service on forth Sundays.

Gene's principal occupation was farming which included raising cattle, chickens, pigs, corn, apples, and honey bees. In addition, he was a jack-of-all-trades type and was a skilled carpenter, blacksmith, and clock repairer. Gene repaired time pieces in a weather boarded side room he added to his cabin. Folks from all around the community would drop in and leave their clocks and watches, picking them up sometime later for the usual fee of 50 cents. Gene was also known about the community (like many Taylor's) as an accomplished musician an 'struck a fine tune' on the fiddle, banjo, and pump organ. He often attended music gatherings and in his more settled life, after he was married, could be found sounding the reed organ during the Mt. Zion Baptist Services as well as in the comfort of his own home playing the Beck (pump-style) reed-organ he ordered out of Chicago, Illinois.

Both Gene and Carrie served their community in the public and private sectors. Gene was appointed as a Notary Public and Ex-Officio Justice of the 1243rd District of Towns County from March 1913 until the late 1940's. He also served on the Board of Education, 1916-1920, and was on the Public Welfare Board in the 1940's. Carrie having been formally educated at Hiawassee Academy (graduating in 1909) served as a school teacher of grades 1-12. She first taught at the Old Swannee School in Buford, Georgia (1909-1910) and later taught at Hog Creek School and other Towns County Schools until the arrival of her second child. She also faithfully served the Methodist Church. first at the Union Hill Methodist Episcopal Churchm where she was admitted from probation at the early age of 14, and after moving to Owl Creek faithfully served the Mountain Scene Methodist Church.

In their later years, the Taylors left their Owl Creek home and moved into Hiawassee for the conveniences the town provided. There they spent their remaining days until, as Gene wrote in a published hymn, they entered "... A Home of Peace and Pure Delight." Eugene William Taylor passed away November 26, 1961, at the age of 82, and Carrie Ada Burch Taylor lived to the age of 89. They are buried side by side in Mt Zion Cemetery, Towns County, Georgia.

iv. NEUL WILMONT TAYLOR, SR., b. October 17, 1918, Towns County, Ga; m. JOYCE EMMAJEAN COPELAND, December 16, 1951, Waynesboro, Tn.

Notes for NEUL WILMONT TAYLOR, SR.:

Nuel Wilmont Taylor, son of Eugene William and Carrie Ada Burch Taylor and great grandson of Civil War Veteran and Towns County Pioneer Jeremiah Martin Taylor was among the third generation of Taylors born and raised in the Owl Creek Community of Town County, Georgia. He was delivered in his father's home October 17, 1918 by Dr J F Johnson. The delivery fee was $10.00.

Nuel was taught the ways of the farm by his father, yet the strongest emphasis in the Taylor household was placed on education and religion. As a youth, Nuel attended Mt Zion Baptist Church and Mountain Scene Methodist church, being baptized at Blue Hole, and from 1926 until 1932 attended the Mountain Scene Elementary School. In 1933 Nuel entered Hiawassee High School and due to the lack of transportation and the distance from home to school, he like most students, boarded with families who lived nearer the school. In the 8th grade, Nuel lived with his Uncle William (Bill) Burch and in the 9th grade boarded with Roy Ozmer, owner/operator of the Mountain Highlander, where he assisted in setting type and running the printing presses. His remaining two years of school, he was able to live at home due to the beginning of school bus services in Towns County.

After graduating from high school in 1937, Nuel enlisted in the CCC and was assigned to Co 485 in Cartersville, Georgia where he developed an interest and solid background in surveying. In 1942, Nuel left the CCC and on the 2nd of February accepted a position as an Engineering Aide with the Tennessee Valley Authority where he trained until he was drafted into the Armed Services during World War II.

During the war, Nuel served in the Infantry with the American Division in Army Intelligence in the Southwest Pacific Theater of Operations. He was stationed at Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, the Fiji Islands and other SW Pacific locations. Nuel was discharged from service in January of 1946.

After the war, Nuel resumed his position with TVA and travelled throughout the Southeast working as an Engineer's Aide from 1946 until early 1950 when he was titled Civil Engineer. In 1951 while working in Wayne County, Tennessee, he met the lady who would become his wife after a one year courtship. On December 16, 1951 Neul W Taylor married JOyce Emmajean Copeland, daughter of Emerald Wayne Copeland and Vertie Veva Morris Copeland and great-great-grandaughter of Northern Alabama and West Tennessee pioneer James Copeland. Joyce attended Collinwood High School, graduating at the age of 16, entered Florence State Teacher's College and in 1950 met Nuel while working for the Department of Agriculture in Waynesboro, Tennessee. Nuel and Joyce were married in the First Baptist Church of Waynesboro, Tennessee, with the Reverend B B Powers performing the ceremony.

The Taylor's first child, Nuel Wilmont Taylor, Jr was born January 15, 1953 in Knoxville, Tennessee. After 10+ years of travelling for TVA, Nuel and family settled in the Chattanooga vicinity shortly before the birth of their second son, Steven Curtis Taylor, on May 10, 1955.

By 1957, Nuel and family had moved to Catoosa County, Georgia, bordering Chattanooga. There the Taylors joined the Boynton Methodist Church and Nuel and Joyce were actively involved with the Lions Club, PTA, Dixie Youth Baseball, Cub Scouts, MYF, The Center Society of Ringgold, Georgia, and The Woman's Guild. In 1967, they left their country setting and moved to the suburbs of Chattanooga, Tennessee where they became members of The Trinity Woodmore United Methodist Church, the Lions and Lioness Clubs, PTA, and Band Boosters.

Although Nuel, like his brothers, broke the traditions of working the soil for a livlihood, he carries throughout his life a love for the mountain environment of his parents, grandparents, and greatgrandparents. Nuel retired from TVA April 4, 1981, lives comfortably in Chattanooga, Tennessee and frequently visits his native homeland of Hiawassee, Georgia.
