John Handley - 1752 - Mar 23, 1834 m.
Sarah Campbell - 1757 - May 28, 1825 11c.
They moved from Augusta County, Va., to Greenbrier County, about 1790, and settled on a farm on Spring Creed, near Falling Spring (now Renick, W.Va.). Her parents appear to have been John Campbell and Hanna. She was named as his devisee and executrix in a suit begun in 1803, and was summoned from Greenbrier to answer the suit, as were John Campbell's children, Hannah, (Administratix of father's will and wife of William Cottle); Jane (Smith); and his son-in-law, John Handley. Also mentioned are his daughter, Rebecca, who married Andres Campbell on Jan 28, 1793. Other daughters mentioned in his will were Martha and Mary. The suit involved title to land for which John Campbell had given a Deed in 1794. Carved stones marking the last resting place of John Handley, his wife, sons, John and Joseph, and granddaughter were still to be seen in 1930, in the "Old Graveyard" beside the Renick Presbyterian Church which he is said to have helped build and where he was an Elder. Dr. John McElheny spoke of John Handley's and the Spring Creek Church (one of the three originals of the region) almost as if they were the same. He stated that Mr. John McCue was the preacher who organized the church. In John Handley, Sr.'s Will, probated June Court 1834 (Greenbrier County Records, Will Book #2, page 26) bequests were made to sons, Joseph, Isaac and Robert; to daughters Grozilla Caraway and Mary Livesay, and to the heirs of sons, John and William. Witnesses to the Will were George R. Gilliland and Michael B. Gilliland. Joseph Handley was named Executor, and his bondsman was Moscy McClintic. The estate was appraised by Franklin Renick, Robert Calhoun, Archibald Handley (Nephew) and John S. Wilson (Husband of Sarah Handley, a niece of the deceased).

Andrew Erwin Renick - 1809 - Jul 03, 1852 9c.
He was the son of Robert Renick and Mary Hamilton, daughter of Major Andrew Hamilton of Blue Sulphur Springs, Greenbrier Co., Va. Andrew was born in Ohio, and went to Virginia a short time before moving to Missouri in 1830. He settled in Lafayette Co., near Wellington, Mo. He was living on this farm when he married, but a few years later sold this farm and bought one north of Columbus, astride the Johnson-Lafayette Co., line. He soon became a prominent feeder and dealer in cattle, driving herds to market as far as Cincinnati, swimming the cattle across the Missouri near Lexington, and the Mississippi on the way. A contract he had with the government during the Mexican War to furnish beef to the Army netted him a large sum. While driving a herd of cattle to the St. Louis market with his 15-year-old son Robert F. as his only helper, he became a victim of Cholera at St. Charles, Mo., and was buried there, his son completing the drive and sale of the cattle and returning along, leading his father's horse. "Sibbie" as she was known, was born in Greenbrier Co., Va., and came to Missouri with her parents about 1825. She was buried at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, east and south of Odessa, Mo.

Mary Reed Wallace - Mar 22, 1941 - Nov 16, 1912 2c.
The story is told of him that when his father died at St. Charles, Mo., while driving cattle to the St. Louis market, Robert was only 15 years old. Nevertheless, he drove the cattle on to market, was paid in "greenbacks" which he carried in a money belt, and returned the way he had come, leading his father's horse. When asked by people along the road what he had done with the money received for the cattle, he replied that he had been paid by check, thus reducing the possibility of being robbed. The money became wet in crossing the river, and was spread to dry by his mother when he reached home. In 1857, he left home and herded cattle on the plains, then he was employed as a government freighter, being assistant wagon boss for thirty wagons in one train or caravan. They made the trip from Leavenworth to Ft. Laramie in 35 days, and the return trip, empty, in 20 days. Later he worked among the Wyoming Indians whose chief was Sitting Bull. His uncle, Robert Renick, was a favorite of Sitting Bull, whose squaw worked months on a black-tailed deerskin coat which was presented to Uncle Robert, who later gave it to his nephew. In June, 1861, he enlisted as a private, in Capt. Newton's Company, Hurst's Regiment in Cockrell's Army, C.S.A. He attained the rank of captain in the second year and continued in this capacity until captured near the close of the War. He was wounded eight times, recovery from the last wound leaving him cirppled for life. Soon after the close of the War, he was released from the federal prison at Ft. Delaware and returned to his mother and home in Warrensburg, Mo., where he lived, much respected, the rest of his life. Mary Reed Wallace was born in Johnson Co., Mo.

William Wallace Livesay - Oct 01, 1824 - Sep 17, 1898 m. Jan 18, 1855
Nancy Ann Ward - Jun 22, 1833 - Jul 27, 1878 11c.
He was nine years old when he moved with his parents from White Sulphur Springs, Va. (now W. Va.) to Missouri. The family located on a farm two miles south and one mile east of Napoleon, a small landing town for boats on the Missouri River. The long trip from Virginia was made in a wagon. His parents remained on this farm the rest of their lives and were buried in the Arnold Cemetery. Bill Livesay, as he was called, became a "plainsman" and a "49er". One or more trips were made in company with W. Z. Hickman, the author of "History of Jackson Co., Mo., 1920". At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was employed by the government to haul provisions out west to army posts. He made 24 trips across the plains. All his children were born on a 260-acre farm in the northeast corner of Jackson Co., Mo., where he lived until 1883. The Missouri-Pacific depot at Leavasy, Mo., was located on a plot in the northwest corner of this farm which he donated to the railroad. Although the station was named for the doner, the name was spelled phonetically by the railroaders. He sold this farm and bought one of 149 acres four miles east of Independence, Mo. Here they moved on Feb 22, 1883. The farm was sold after his death. Nancy's mother was Nancy Sanders Holman, second wife of her father, David Ward, one of the three named to select the county seat when "by an act of the general assembly approved December 15, 1826, Jackson Co., was raised to the status of an independent county". At that time, the rich prairies were considered useless, and following a survey of the county for several weeks, the men decided on a thickly-wooded hill near the famous "public springs" as being near the center of the inhabitable part of the county. This site which was to become the public square of Independence, was at that time part of the old Indian Trail from Fort Osage, which later became known at the Santa Fe Trail. David Ward's first wife was Nancy J. Mitchell. After David Ward died, his wife, Nancy Sanders Holman, married Major Saunders. Thereafter, Nancy Ann Ward lived with Dr. William Ward and Sarah Livesay and was married in their home. She was a school teacher. Attended Chapel Hill College, Southeast of Oak Grove, Mo., and later attended Ladies' College in Fulton, Mo. She is buried in Salem Cemetery, six miles east of Independence, and one mile west of Highway #24.

John Winfrey Livesay - Nov 07, 1921 - Mar 15, 1943 not m.
He and his sister, Alice, were graduated together from Polytechnic High School at Fort Worth in 1938. Both were members of the National Honor Society. He was also concert master of the high school orchestra. He attended North Texas Agricultural College, Arlington Texas; and, at the outbreak of World War II, was employed as an instructor at Richey's Flying School, Fort Worth, Texas. He enlisted as a Flying Cadet Dec. 08, 1941, the day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He had primary training at Coloman, Texas, and secondary training at Perrin Field, Texas. He received his "wings" at Lake Charles, La. on Aug 5, 1942, with his family present. Assigned to the 329th Fighter Group as pilot of a P-38 "Lockheed Lightning". After three weeks at Paine Field, Seattle, Wa., and about the same time at Glendale, Ca., he was assigned to active service on Adak Island in the Aleutians, in the group that established the secret air base on the Island. His flying companions called him "Spider" because he was so tall and had long, slender arms and legs. On March 15, 1943, he drove his twin-engined Lightning in his last flight, as a member of a strafing team ahead of medium bombers in an attack on Kiska. In the words of his best flying friend, Lt. John K. Geddes, who had "flown his wing on 20 raids", "We were strafing North Head at 10 feet, 330 miles per hour. I saw his right engine torch into flame and yelled, 'Feather your right prop, Spider!' We followed him out 25 miles. Spider pushed her within 300 feet of Rat Island when he went down. Between the 15-foot surf rips, I saw him clear the sinking plane, lose his raft to the waves, and then struggle for the shore in the freezing water. I saw Spider knocked down twice." When the rescue party reached him, he was found floating face down five feet from shore. All efforts to resuscitate him proved of no avail; tundra was cut and a bed hollowed out with hunting knives, his body dressed in his flying togs, was wrapped in two army blankets, and a mound of sea-polished stones, passed up hand-to-hand, supporting a rough driftwood cross, was made over his grave to mark his final resting place, facing bleak Bering Sea on lonely Rat Island.

Joshua Moore Gibson - Nov 26, 1862 - May 25, 1941 4c.
He was one of a family of eleven children, and was born near Cumberland Gap, Tenn. Because of the harsh treatment of his father, he left home when a young man and went to Missouri. He is said to have "seldom displayed a temper, but when he did, there is no reasoning with him." His occupations were farming; Independence, Mo. police force for about 20 years; and Standard Oil Company. She kept house and from 1915 to 1932 worked as a seamstrees in a factory in Independence. For sometime following their marriage, they lived on a farm near Pleasant Hill, Cass Co., Mo. From there, they moved to a farm, "Uncle Frank's Place," six miles NE of Independence. This farm was purchased from his first wife's brother. In 1908, they moved to 327 E. Short St., Independence, when he joined the police force. From 1911 to 1915, they lived on a farm, five miles north of Kingsville, Johnson Co., Mo., where "the going was pretty tough and things went from bad to worse." In an effort to clear up the mortgage, they traded the farm for property in Independence and it was then that she went to sewing and he to work at Sugar Creek. After he left the Independence police force, they moved in the fall of 1934 to a farm at Greenwood in the south part of Jackson Co., Mo. Following his death, she and her younger daughter,Edythe, returned to Independence, where they lived at 1610 S. Pleasant St. He was first married to Sallie Elizabeth Searcy (b. Sep 01, 1867; d. Apr 17, 1890) on Oct 28, 1885. They had two children, Rosie Corletta Gibson (b. Sep 20, 1886; m. Orville S. Smith) and William Oscar Gibson (b. Apr 06, 1888). Joshua died of angina pectoris and Rebecca of coronary thrombosis.

Benjamin Franklin Searcy - Sep 04, 1872 - Nov 23, 1944 no c.
He was born on the south side of Kansas City, Mo. When he was 15 years old, his father, Francis M. Searcy, moved his family to a farm northeast of Independence, Mo. He lived there with his parents until 1898 when he was remarried at the home of his wife's father. They lived on rented farms near Independence until Jan 1, 1904, when they moved to Oklahoma and bought a small farm 10 miles north of Chickasha, on which they built a four-room house. This house, with all outbuildings, was destroyed by a cyclone, Jun 4, 1906. This was replaced with a two-room house, to which were added two rooms and a sleep-porch in 1916. They continued to live there until September, 1943 when the farm was sold and they bought a small, modern home in Chickasha into which they moved, December 22, 1943. He died there and his body was buried at Salem Cemetery, five miles northeast of Independence, Mo. She lived on in Chickasha until May 24, 1946, when she sold her property and went to live with her niece, Nancy Virginia Livesay (Ha-124.791), and husband, Carroll V. Hadley, of Tabler, Oklahoma. March 23, 1947, she returned to Chickasha where she had purchased a modern four-room house. When she and her husband went to Oklahoma, "section lines were not open" and they lived in a half dugout at first.
