        Samples of Incorrect David Faucher Data in Church of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) Databases

The next pages of data are a sample of information that has been entered into LDS databases and are made available to everyone on their www.familysearch.org website. There are numerous entries concerning David Faucher and Marthe Des Fontaines and many connect the Colonial Fanchers to them as their children. Unfortunately, this information has been used extensively by people who are unaware it is incorrect, and who are also unaware that these submissions are not part of actual vital records that have been copied by the LDS church.

For example, a search for “David Faucher” on the LDS website will return the following records:

In this total of 22 records found for “David Faucher” – all 22 have errors.

Of the 14 records for “David Fancher” found in the IGI – British Isles, all 14 have errors, and each one mistakenly links him, in one way or another, to David Faucher.

The LDS records do contain vital records copied by members of the Church, however their records also contain other information taken from lineages (Ancestral File, Pedigree Resource files, and Patron Sheets) submitted to them. These submissions do not require proofs or sources of any kind. Information from these submitted lineages can also appear duplicated in the International Genealogical Index (IGI), the same database where the actual vital records are located. In addition, a relative can be sealed (“Sealings for the dead”) to the LDS Church by a member, or baptized (“Baptisms for the dead”) and this information also appears as an “Individual Record” in the IGI with no required proof. Members of the LDS Church create these genealogical records for religious ceremonies that they maintain for “Eternity.” To tell the difference between an actual vital record copied by the LDS and a submission, sealing, or baptism, it is necessary to check the source information of each individual record. None of the records linking the Colonial Fanchers to David Faucher are vital records. They are all submissions containing erroneous information and no source information or proofs.

The only vital records that appear for David Faucher’s children are the baptisms in the French Threadneedle Street Church, London, England. (Records of the French Church, Threadneedle Street, London, England, Public Records Office, London, England, RG4/4645, Filmed 1986 (Microfilm Volumes 1482451 and 466708, Family History Center, Church of the Latter Day Saints, Salt Lake City, Utah). Extensive searches have never uncovered any further documentation anywhere about the David Faucher Family other than this church record in London. The family just disappears and nothing more can be ascertained about it. These Threadneedle Street Church baptisms do not contain the names of the Colonial Fanchers. Originally, these vital records from the Threadneedle Church were entered into the database by Mrs. LaFaun K. Andrews of Idaho Falls, Idaho when she was keying vital record data for the LDS Church. A conversation with Mrs. Andrews revealed she did not enter that they were parents of the Colonial Fanchers, or any other Fancher-related information. Over the years, the original information has been altered and added to by other people in the form of submissions.

There are glaring discrepancies in these submitted records. For example, “David Cordonnier Faucher” is the name given for David Faucher, Shoemaker. The most common error is that people have entered his occupation Cordonnier, the French word for Cordwainer or Shoemaker, as his middle name. The Colonial Fanchers, Catherine, William, David, Hannah, Richard, John have been added as children of David Faucher and Marthe Des Fontaines in erroneous and undocumented submissions.

Catherine Fancher has been entered in the same Ancestral File record twice with two slightly different birth dates and as being born in London on one and Plymouth, Connecticut on the other. David is shown twice and being born in two different places. Ester Faucher, baptized August 2, 1702 as shown in the original Threadneedle Street church record, is not included in the Ancestral File.

Yet, many people mistakenly use these LDS submitted records as a reliable source of information for establishing their lineages. This erroneous LDS information had been unchallenged, and rarely questioned, by users.

Unfortunately, it has been in use for so long that it has taken on a life of its own, and has mistakenly become a “fact” in some Fancher family lineages. People create their Fancher family trees from the LDS information, never realize the serious error they have made, and then perpetuate these inaccuracies.

But for clarification of these errors, in the bottom left-hand margin of each entry, we have used a numerical endnote in parenthesis to further explain the individual errors in these records.
