Many of the headstones in Warner Graveyard are broken, laying in a pile and some are missing.  These four photos show the broken stones and some of the ones on the ground.  Picture #1 #2 #3 #4

According to stories passed down, the Warner Graveyard, at one point in time, had many tall pine trees in and surrounding it.  Some folks said when the wind blew through the trees it sounded like voices whispering in the wind.  I personally have heard this happen in other cemeteries.   The graveyard sits on top of a hill and others talked about how the wind was always howling through the trees.  Some Warner family members did not want to be buried in the Warner Graveyard because of the strange things that happened there.  There were others who would not pass by the graveyard and would go out of their way as not to drive by it.

I spent a warm October day in the fall of 2001 with my cousin Ruby taking photo's of all the stones in the cemetery. We uncovered the ones that had fallen and did our best to read what the older stones said. As for me the day was quite unremarkable but I did feel a sence of warmth and pride as I sat among my ancestors. This web site is to help keep their memories alive.

There are a few of versions of what happened to the graveyard and I will tell all versions that I know.

One version goes that a member of the Warner family went crazy one day, cut down all the trees and broke up all the stones because he thought he could hear the voices of the Warner slaves that were buried in the graveyard.

Another version is the pines mysteriously caught fire one day and as the pines trees burned the flames created such an intense heat it caused the headstones to crack and break apart.

I learned of another version... One of the Warner girls said her cousin who was also a Warner girl admitted setting fire to the tree's just to be mean and used the excuse that the tree's were dead.

What actually happened may never be known but the fact remains there are still burned stumps and  many broken stones in the Warner Graveyard.
