Lieut. Timothy Phelps born 2 Sept 1639 Windsor, Hartford, CT died 1719 married 19 Mar 1661 to Mary Griswold bpt 13 Oct 1644 Windsor, Hartford, CT daughter of Edward Griswold of Killingworth, Middlesex, CT died some years before her husband.

Mr. Phelps resided in Windsor, Hartford, CT on the old homestead, land purchased by his father from the Indians. He was propounded Oct 1663, and made a freeman 2 May 1664. His will, dated 2 May 1717. His son:

Joseph Phelps born 27 Sept 1666 Windsor, Hartford, CT died 30 Aug 1716 married 18 Nov 1686 Sarah Hosford born 27 Sept 1666 Windsor, Hartford, CT same day as her husband, daughter of John and Phillury (Thrall) Hosford. Her father was a man of large family and considerable property, leaving her a his death œ100. She died probably in Hebron.

Mr. Phelps settled in Windsor, where his children were all born. He owned a large amount of land in Hebron, and probably removed there late in life, about 1710. where some of his children were living. His will dated 23 Aug 1716, probated Hartford Probate Records, Vol 9. His son:

Mr. Phelps settled in Hebron, Hartford, CT. His father was one of the largest real estate owners in Hebron. "May, 1713, upon the petition of Joseph Phelps, of Windsor, requesting some allowance for several things lost by his son Joseph Phelps, a soldier improved in a scout under the command of Lieut. Crocker, in his escape from the Indian enemy: this Assembly grant to the petitioner the sum of thirty shillings to be paid him out of the Colony Treasury."--(Col. Rec., Vol. 5.) His son:

Joseph married 2nd on 24 Jan 1741 to Lydia Rowley who died 29 Dec 1757 Hebron, Tolland, CT. He probably married 3rd 11 Aug 1760 to Susannah Morrison.

Mr. Phelps was a farmer. His son:

Joseph Phelps, born 29 Mar 1742/3 Hebron,Tolland, CTdied 17 Jan 1795 Hebron, Tolland, CT married 6 Dec 1764 Jemima Post born 21 Sept 1748 Hebron, Tolland, CT dau of Israel Post. After the death of Mr. Phelps she married for 2nd husband Ashbel Phelps in 1789. By him she had no issue. She died 5 Dec 1805.

Mr. Phelps settled in Hebron, Tolland, CT. Mr. Phelps served in the Revolutionary Army enlisting in Col. Hooker's regiment and Capt. Foot's company and was at Peekskill, NY. His son:

Heman married 2nd on 30 Sept 1832 to wid Betsey (Brown) Hull who was born12 April 1795 at Cortland county NY and died 21 Oct 1838 Preble, Cortland NY. Heman married 3rd wid Laura Emily Elliot born 20 Sept 1794 and died 19 June 1862. Preble, Cortland, NY.

Heman Phelps was a cloth draper, at this time of considerable importance in finishing up the production of domestic spinning wheel and loom. This business he carried on until his factory and stock of goods were destroyed by fire, causing him a great loss. In 1807 he, with his wife and family removed to Preble, NY where he taught school, and also was chosen to and filled serveral town offices. In 1839 he removed to Oneida, Madison, NY and later to Syracuse, Onondaga, NY where he died 21 Nov 1865. His children by first wife. First three born in Herbron, CT ; last five in Preble, NY

Newspaper Obit - PHELPS - in this city, February 19, 1901, Elizabeth, widow of the late Ralph R. Phelps, aged 87, 11 months and 14 days. Funeral services at the home of her son, Charles W. Phelps, No. 202 Green street, Thursday, the 21st inst., at 2.30 p.m.
AND OLDEST MEMBER OF PARK CHURCH DEAD - Mrs. Elizabeth Phelps passes away, aged eighty-eight years. Resided in Syracuse seventy-five Years - the death Records in the City. Mrs. Elizabeth Phelps, aged 88 years, died at 4.27 o'clock yesterday afternoon at her home, No. 202 Green Street, of pneuomnia. The funeral services will be held at the house at 2.30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon and the remains will be placed in the receiving vault at Oakwood Cemetery. Mrs. Elizabeth Phelps, formerly Miss Elizabeth Ames, was born in Oppenheim, Montgomery county, March 5, 1818, and came to this city at the age of 13 years on a packet boat on the Erie Canal. She was the oldest living member of the Park Central Presbyterian church. On March 24, 1833, she was married to Ralph Phelps, whose death occurred March 13, 1873. They were members of the church of which the Park Presbyterian church is the outgrowth. Mrs. Phelps was a member of the women's societies in the churhc and a devout Christian. She has resided in Syracuse for the past seventy-five years. Mrs. Phelps is survived by three son, Dudley A., Charles W. and George B. Phelps.

Phelps, Dudley A. , Dewitt, was born in Syracuse in 1837, son of Ralph R. and Elizabeth Phelps, natives of CT. The father came to Syracuse about 1809 and followed the wagonmaking trade until 1850. He then took the contract of building 16 miles of the Great Western Railroad in Canada, opposite Detroit. He followed up railroad contracting for a number of years, building 22 miles near Charleston, S.C., and also part of the Utica & Boonville Road, and finally purchased the homestead at Dewitt. After residing here a few years, he retired to Syracuse and died in 1874. Dudley A. folliws general farming and dairying. In 1863 he married Delia M. Avery, who died in 1867, leaving one son, William R. His second wife was Sarah L. Quintard, by whom he has three children: George E., Lizzie A. and Charles W.

William R. Phelps mother died when he was an infant and he was raised by his maternal grandfather William Avery. William Avery was educated in the district schools and the Syracuse public schools. William R. Phelps was heir to his grandfather William Avery's estate. (the Groton Avery Calan Vol 2) page 866 "William Avery's will dated 31 Aug 1888, in which he calls his grandson, William R. Phelps, his sole heir."

Phelps, William R., Dewitt, was born in Dewitt in 1865, son of Dudley R. and Adelia M. (Avery) Phelps. The mother died while William was an infant, and the father still resides in the town. William R. was raised by his grandfather, William Avery, and educated in the district schools and the Syracuse public schools. His grandfather came to the town of Dewitt at an early date, where he ran a packet for many years and was otherwise extensively engaged in boating interests. He was superintendent of the canal for several years, and died where William R. now lives on March 15, 1889, aged 47 years. Mr. Phelps was married in 1884 to Mary I. Whitbread, he has 154 acres of well improved land and follows general farming and dairying.

Ralph Rowley Phelps line goes back to Lieut. Timothy Phelps 1639-1719 of Windsor, CT and Mary Griswold daugther of Edward Griswold of Killingworth, CT. Ralph settled in Syracuse around 1828. He was a carriage maker.

Ralph Rowley Phelps wife Elizabeth, aunt Anna Lenthal Ames married Daniel Griswold, descendant of Edward Griswold. Anna was sister of Elizabeth's father Josiah Ames.

Elizabeth (Betsey) AMES the wife of Ralph is listed as daugther of Josiah Ames in Josiah's will dated 21 Aug 1841 at Randolph, Cattaraugus, NY.
