  The Connection Brien-Hill-Mason


     Once upon a time there was a family named Hill, originally from the Province of Nova Scotia, Dominion of Canada, which in the early history of the family--known as British North America.

     The parents of this family were Charles W. Hill born August 12, 1789, he died December 24, 1844.  His wife's name was  Rebekah born May 8, 1789, she died 1875(?).   Rebekah Hill was born in New(?) Rochelle.  Their child Arabella was born September 22, 1828, she was the 8th child of 10, the other children names are unknown.  

     Arabella Hill married William Stuart Mason, of Glasgow, Scotland, G.B., born about 1837 and died September 26, 1889.  They are both buried in Cypress Hills Cemetery, New York City, New York, U.S.A.  The children of Arabella Hill Mason and William Stuart Mason were Charles James Mason born 1863,  George Alexander Mason born 1867, and Flora(e)nce Clarissa Mason born September 17, 1905.  Florance was born in Nova Scotia, she died October 8, 1924 in Middletown, New York.

     Florance Clarissa Mason married *Henry Brien, born March 1852, on September 28, 1904.  Henry Brien was born in New York city about 1848/52 and died March 26, 1910 in Middletown, New York.  He was the son of Walter and Jane Porter Brien of Ireland.  They had two daughters,  Innes Brien born September 17, 1905 in Middletown, New York, she died January 1980 in Middletown, New York, and Louise Jane Brien, who died in infancy.  

      Innes Brien married Jesse James Slover, born February 15, 1900 in Bound Brook, New Jersey, in 1924.  He died 1974, in Middletown, New York.   The children from their union Janice Slover born December 5, 1925 in Middletown, New York and  Thomas James Slover born March 29, 1943 in Middletown, New York, he died April 20, 1993 in Center Moriches, Long Island, New York and is buried in Bloomingburg Rural Cemetery, Bloomingburg, New York.

     Janice Slover married Earl W. Van Benschoten born February 9, 1923 on August 11, 1945 in Middletown, New York.  Their children are Craig Brien Van Benschoten born June 7, 1949 in Middletown, New York and  David James Van Benschoten born November 8, 1952 in Middletown, New York.

     *Henry had 9 children from a previous marriage to Sarah Ann Babcock, married December 27, 1871, born February 2, 1853, in Warwick, New York, two of which survived to maturity: Edward born August 1872, and Henry Brien Jr. born March 1875. Sarah's parents were Jacob and Kizah Babcock.  Sarah had four brothers, Charles R. and Erastus R. Babcock, Middletown, New York, and Martin and John Babcock, of Illnois, and four sisters, Mrs. Frank Drew, of Chester; Mrs. W. L. Montross, of Ramsey, N. J.; Miss Alice Babcock, of Kingston, and  Miss Martha Babcock, of Willard, N. Y.

Henry had one brother, William, born in Ireland about 1845, he lived in Warwick.

 Harry (Henry, Jr.) was married to a Lydia (last name unknown).
