More than 26,000 Roman troops were stationed at Hadrian's Wall during the heyday of its occupation. Among these were irregulars called "auxiliaries" recruited from all over the Roman Empire - Gaul, Spain, Batavia (in present day Holland), Mauretania, Dacia, Thrace, Syria, Sarmatia and elsewhere. The grave marker below refers to a trooper from "PANN" - or Pannonia, part of modern day Hungary.
