Downtown Kirkcudbright
Kirkcudbright is a small port town on the south coast of Galloway. When English reiver, Sir Thomas Carleton of Cumberland, raided Dumfries and Galloway in 1547, extracting tributes from local nobles, Kirkcudbright alone resisted. The townsmen locked the gates, transformed the town's dykes into ramparts, and - under the leadership of Thomas Maclellan of Bombie - forced Carleton to withdraw to England. Maclellan's Castle still stands in the center of town, and is one of its main attractions.
