Main Tower Of Dirleton Castle From The Rear

I am fond of Dirleton Castle because the De Vaux family that first constructed it are reputed to be the ancestors of my paternal grandmother's family, the Vances. However, the De Vauxes did not own the castle for long. It was commandeered by Edward II at the turn of the 13th century, then demolished by Robert The Bruce. After the War of Independence ended, it was restored by the Hallyburtons. Then it passed hands to the Ruthvens, an evil clan responsible for the murder of Lord Darnley's comrade, Rizzio. It was demolished again by Cromwell in the 17th century, and during the same century it was used to imprison witches who were later executed. The castle may well be haunted, but I saw no ghosts - only fantasy visions of my supposed aristocratic ancestors.
