The Caledonian Canal

The topiary of "Nessie" shown below in this photograph of Fort Augustus, Inverness is the closest we ever got to the Loch Ness Monster. But this photo shows something else - one of the locks of the Caledonian Canal, which was designed and built in the early 19th century by the engineer Thomas Telford. This canal interconnects the three lochs that stretch lengthwise across the Great Glen to provide an unbroken waterway from one end of Northern Scotland to the other.
