Urquhart Castle At Loch Ness
Urquhart Castle was built in the 13th century on land granted to Allan Durward, the Lord of Urquhart. Later it was acquired by the Comyns, and then seized by Edward I after his invasion of Scotland. The castle was assaulted several times by the forces of Robert The Bruce. After the War of Independence, the castle was held by the Earl of Moray, then by the Scottish Crown, and then it passed hands back and forth between the Crown and Clan Macdonald for many generations. The castle was eventually abandoned in the 17th century, after a final demolition to leave it uninhabitable by Jacobite forces during The Glorious Revolution of 1689. Although it was never a peaceful home for any clan for long, it now belongs to the National Trust for Scotland and does a booming business with the tourists.
