who settled in Macomb County, Michigan
Welcome to the Rosso/Rossow Home Page. My name is Barbara McClelland Lewis, and I am from Royal Oak, Michigan, presently living in Ogden, Utah. I am not a descendant of the Rosso family, but I am connected to the Rosso family through John McClelland Rosso of Birmingham, Michigan. He is a cousin through my McClelland line, and after I had researched our mutual McClelland Scotch/Irish ancestors, he asked me if I would research his Rosso family that came from Germany.
As I started my research, I ran into Carol Black-Rossow of Eugene, Oregon, through the internet. She forwarded to me the information that Ann Faulkner had collected for the Macomb County database and surname files at the Mount Clemens Library. The backbone of the information on the descendants of John Rosso was based on a copy of a large chart donated to the Library by Howard E. Rosso of Rochester Hills in 1996. It is this data that I have used for documentation on my GEDCOM on the Michigan Rosso descendants.
I then proceeded to research the parish records of Kastorf, which is a parish close to Rosenow, a small town in Mecklenburg. I had found out the family was from Rosenow from the ship listing of the Rosso family. I do not speak or read German but received excellent help from a German volunteer worker at my local Family History Library, who sat with me during the entire reading of these records on microfilms. Carol Black-Rossow's urging and encouragement kept me going through this challenging process.
The surname "Rossow" was found in the German records. Evidently, like many German emigrants, Johann Carl Rossow changed his name to "Rosso" when he came to America. Many of the given names were also changed.
Please note that the parents of Dorothea Fischer, wife of Johann Carl Rossow, are not proven. The notes included in her records shows my "assumptions."

Carol Black-Rosso found this account of this family leaving Hamburg for NYC on October 31, 1853. The captain of the ship was Captain K.J. Diekmann. The Rossows are listed as all being from Rosenow, Mecklenberg: Carl, Wilhelmine, Johann, Ernst, Sophia, and Carl.
In "Germans to America" volume 6, page 269, we find: Sailing from Hamburg to New York, arriving 16 Jan 1854, aboard the "John Hermann": Carl Rossow 56 laborer; Catharina 25; Johann 34; Friederike 28; male infant; Ernst 27; Sophia 23 famale; Carl 22 male brickmaker.

I am looking for a lead to any Fischer research from the Mechlenburg-Schwerin area, circa 1860. My grandfather was Ernst Wilhelm Zaver Fischer, born 28 Jan 1866 in Mechlenburg-Schwerin. This is my "brick wall." I have aunts with Sophia and Magdalena in their names, but I realize these are common in that era.
Hi from Scottsbluff, Nebraska. My grandfather came to America in the 1800's from Hamburg, Germany and settled in the David City and Shelby, Nebraska area. They ended up in the Ericson, Nebraska area in the 1920's. My grandmother was a Taddekin.
I will check on the names of the family and let you know, but I think that my great grandfather was Ernst Rossow, that later changed to Rosso after a family disagreement. Some went with Rosso and some lost the "w." Most of the Rosso's I am related to are in the Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado area.
I am the youngest of the great grandkids.My grandpa was Louis Rosso
and my father is Erwin Rosso. They are from south
of Ericson, Nebraska about 6 miles. The old farm house is still in town..it
was moved several years ago. We still have a lot a relatives in
Nebraska.
