THE GODWIN STORY

(So Far)

Allen Godwin was born in North Carolina March 11, 1788 to James Godwin, Jr.(b. cir. 1736) and Elizabeth Dawson (b. cir. 1747). He married first Polly Green February 15, 1809 in Cumberland, NC.  They had two children (names unknown) in North Carolina in 1809 and 1811, a third was John Allen Godwin cir. 1815 in Johnston Co., NC and the fourth and fifth were born in Georgia, Pennie cir. 1817 and Calvin G. cir 1819.

Martha Reynolds (bn. 1804 in NC) was Allens's second wife.  They married cir 1822 in North Carolina and remained there through the births of five of their children (Jacob-1824, Levi-1825, Alexander-1829, Elisha-1832, Eli-1834).

The 1850 Mississippi census lists Allen as a farmer with $3,000 in real estate.  We know from this census that they left North Carolina some time after 1834 when Eli was born because their next three children (Lucinda Parolee-1837, Elijah-1840, Akerial H-1842) were born in Tennessee.  The last of their seven children, Laticia F, was born in Mississippi in 1848.

According to App Godwin in ANCESTORS OF GRAYSON COUNTY, Allen Godwin settled on a plantation in Mississippi.

The 1860 Mississippi census shows that Allen was a minister in Tippah County with real estate valued at $5,000 and a personal estate of $32,877.  That was a lot of money in those days.

Allen Godwin served in the War of 1812 in the Miliary Unit Co G, 5th Reg of NC Militia, Inf.  He died August 28, 1872 in Near Blue Mountain, Tippah county, MS and is buried in the Godwin Cemetery, Tippah County, MS. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=troubleatfifty&id=I02273

According to App Godwin again, Allen's son Jacob was a soldier in Alabama.  He had seven children and brought his family to Texas in 1875 stopping first in Van Zandt County and then moving to Grayson County (Dixie, TX) in 1879.

Allen's son Elija married Minerva in 1860 or before and each of their eight children was born in Mississippi, probably Ripley; James Aaron-1858, John L-1859, Martha L-1867, Elizabeth-1869, Mary Ella-1870, Leota-1872, Cuticia-1874 and Jacob Arthur (John Franklin Godwin's father)-1875.

We next find Elija and Minerva in the 1880 Grayson County, TX census.  I suspect they followed Elija's older brother JacobElija and Minerva along with many other Godwin ancestors are buried at the Dixie Cemetery just outside Whitesboro, Texas.
