In The Foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains

Many of the cemeteries in Nevada County were born of the gold rush era. Little townships such as Graniteville, You Bet, Moores Flat and Little York are long gone but reminders have been left to us in the form of cemeteries of many small communities.

Viewing the gravestones, one is likely to find many babies and young children, a sad reminder of cholera, consumption and other such diseases. A gravestone at the Red Dog cemetery tells of a young man dying from a snake bite. Another died in an effort trying to cross a stream. At one point in time, the county was cursed with an influenza epidemic. People were dying so fast there was no choice but to bury them in trenches and cover the remains immediately.

I invite you to read the gravestones enclosed on the following pages and get a feel of what life may have been like in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of Northern California in the mid 1800's and early 1900's. Proceeding the gravestones for each cemetery is a little history of the various areas in the county, along with pictures.

I do hope you enjoy your visit and find this site interesting as well as educational. Perhaps you will find the name of an ancestor. This is an on going project, so check back often.
