JUNGWIRTH - AUSTRALIAN HISTORY
JUNGWIRTHS in Australia...

John (Johan) Jungwirth came to Australia from Hungary in the 1850's. Although the name Jungwirth is more likely German or Austrian in origin, John Jungwirth was a patriotic Hungarian - he named his businesses after Lajos (Louis) Kossuth, the famous Hungarian freedom fighter and statesman.
This picture is probably of John's father Francis (Franz) Jungwirth wearing the uniform of a colonel in the Hungarian army in the 1850's?

Some history of 19th. century Hungary
Hungarians, unhappy with Austrian control, started a reform movement to preserve Hungarian language and culture and to achieve political and economic change.

In 1848-1849, a revolution started in Pest, and quickly spread to the rest of the country. The Hungarian army won several fierce and bloody battles and the Habsburg Emperor was dethroned. The prominent Hungarian politician and orator, Lajos Kossuth was elected Governor.

The Austrian Habsburgs with the help of the Russians, put down the revolution in the summer of 1849. Many revolutionaries were able to escape, some were escorted to the border to go into voluntary exile, but many were executed by their conquerors. Kossuth left Hungary, but later returned to become a political leader.

In 1867 the Hungarians struck a compromise with the Habsburgs - setting up a double-centred monarchy with seats in Vienna and Pest-Buda.

In 1873 Pest, Buda and Obuda were unified: Budapest became a European metropolis.
