Joshua Grant of Smithfield, Maine

These notes cover the Joshua Grant who moved from Shapleigh to Smithfield, Maine about 1800-1810, and the following generation. For a more complete coverage of the Grants of Maine see Christine Pettit's web site http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/p/e/t/Christine-M-Pettit/GENE34-0001.html
The family of Joshua Grant is also covered at John Kaherl's website: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/k/a/h/John-B-Kaherl/index.html

1  Joshua Grant was born about 1760-65. He died in August 1840. Joshua married first 9 Feb. 1784 to Betsey Horsum at Berwick, Me (intentions posted 17 November 1783). She died in 1830. Joshua married second about Dec 1830 at Dearborn, ME to Patience Ellis Rankins by the town clerk, Jacob Maine. Patience was the widow of John Rankins. He was born 15 June 1744 in Dover, NH, and died 7 May 1828, age 83. John Rankins had first married Peggy Door.

The parentage of Joshua Grant is not yet determined. The year of his birth is estimated from the census records (Table 1 below). A more detailed analysis of the Joshua Grant household in the census records is provided elsewhere [view]. In 1830 and 1840 the census indicates Joshua was born betwen 1760 and 1770. In 1810 he is shown as being born before 1765, and in 1790 he is listed as being born before 1774. From this it appears that Joshua Grant was born about 1760 - 1765. However, in the 1800 census, Joshua is listed as being born before 1755.

The first wife of Joshua Grant is not named in the Dearborn records of the birth of their children. A deed dated in 1829 names his wife as Betsey. A Joshua Grant married Betsey Horsom in 1784 at Berwick. Her parents were probably John and Olive Horsum/Hersom. A child was named John H., or probably John Horsum. In 1820 Olive "Hersham" is enumerated just after Joshua Grant, she was either a near neighbor, or may have shared the same house {29}.

The census records place Joshua and his family in Shapleigh from 1790 to 1800. He is called Joshua Grant 2nd in the 1800 census record. Shapleigh is near Berwick. The Shapleigh-Berwick-Lebanon area of southern Maine was well populated with members of the Grant family. By 1810, Joshua had moved to that part of West Pond Plantation, which later became Dearborn, and is now Smithfield. Dearborn was incorporated from West Pond Plantation in February 1812. Smithfield annexed part of Dearborn in 1840. In 1841 the town was dissolved, and the remaining parts of the town went to Belgrade, Smithfield, and West Waterville. West Waterville is now Oakland. The incentive for the move to West Pond Plantation has not yet been found, however many families from southern Maine relocated to this area during this time period.

Joshua Grant was a farmer {16}. He mortgaged his property for $150 in 1824 (view text). In 1829 Joshua sold his land to son Elijah for $300, who, for the same $300 granted a life-long lease to his parents (text). His land was located south of Smithfield center, between North Pond and East Pond [view map]. {16}

Joshua Grant of Smithfield died intestate. His estate was administered by Jacob Main and inventoried by Dore Smith, Saml. Whitehouse and Alvin Wade, 1 Sept 1840. The estate was valued at $98.59. {}

There is a stone in the Stevens Cemetery next to those of Elihu Stevens and two of his wives, marked only "1830." This is probably the gravestone of Betsey Grant, first wife of Joshua Grant. Although the gravestone of Joshua Grant cannot now be found, he is known to be also buried there. A deed dated in 1879 mentions his gravestone in this cemetery [view text].

After Joshua's death, Patience lived with Jacob and Charlotte Main. In 1850 she, age 84, is listed as living in Belgrade with Jacob Maine, age 59, Charlotte Main, age 48, Eliza A. Firbush, age 17, and Thomas Bickford, age 12 {23}.

A note in the Dearborn records states that Joshua Grant's daughter (unnamed) had a child, Sally, born 28 Feb 1815 {9; 10}.

2  Samuel Grant (Joshua) was born 15 May 1784 {9 p. 52}, probably in Shapleigh, ME. He, of West Pond Plantation, married Abigail Bickford, 25 February 1808 {28a} [1807 ref?]. Abigail was born 21 December 1790, the daughter of Joseph and Deborah (Tibbetts) Bickford {9 p. 27; 27b, 28}. Samuel Grant died in Washington County, Ohio about 1869 {27, 28}. Widow Abigail Grant died of consumption at Adams township, Washington Co., Ohio, 10 April 1871, age 80 years, 4 months {27b, 28}.

In 1810 the Samuel Grant household included a male under 10, a male age 26-45, and a female age 16-26 {3}. Samuel owned land near Mercer. In 1826, "samuel Grants lands annexed to 2nd district in East Pond Plantation" {24b}. In 1829, mention is made that the lands of Samuel Grant and Jeremiah Hill abut the town line of Mercer" {24b}.

Samuel Grant removed to Ohio. In 1860 he is listed in the census of Adams township, Washington Co., OH. In 1869 Samuel Grant transferred land in Washington Co., Ohio to his son Greenwood {27b}.

A Samuel Grant was a private in the Massachusetts militia, Capt. William Hussey's Company, Lt. Col. D. McGaffey's Regiment, during the War of 1812. This company was raised in Rome, ME and saw service in Hallowell. Also serving in the company was Elihu Stevens, husband of both Betsey and Mary Grant, who were sisters of Samuel {25}.

Bickford (2000) notes "there is proof (to date) only that Greenwood Childs Grant is Samuel's son. However, present evidence points to the likehood that the others listed are his children also." {31} Hutchison {28} lists six children of Samuel Grant: Greenwood C., Elizabeth, Melvina, Daniel L., Adelia, and John H. This family needs more research.

5  Joshua Grant (Joshua) was born 30 December 1789 {9, p. 52}, probably at Shapleigh, ME. He married Mary Whitehouse. She, also called Polly or Molly, was born 13 May 1796 to John and Susan Whitehouse {9, pp. 52, 94}. Joshua probably died about 1849 at Mercer. Polly died at Mercer, where she lived, 1 Dec 1857, age 62 yr. 8 mo. {15, 17}

Joshua Grant, Jr. was a private in the 21st Regt., US Infantry during the War of 1812. He received a pension for his service, beginning 18 July 1822 [at age about 32. Was he injured?], of $48 per year.{30}

From 1829 (age 40) until 1849, Joshua Grant, Jr. was placed under the guardianship of Jacob Main because he was a spendthrift and drunk. Joshua Grant is named in a list of pensioners in 1835 as living in Kennebec county.

In 1840 the Joshua Grant, Jr. household included males: 1 5-10, 1 40-50; and a female 40-50 {6 p. 138}. In 1850 Mary Grant, age 45, and Joshua Grant, age 26, a driver, lived in Smithfield in the household of Jonathan and Emily Mosher {7 p. 84}

Mary Grant, widow of Joshua Grant, died intestate. She had her estate administered by her son-in-law William Harlow, because "she left no sons who are residents of this state" [Maine]. Heirs were Hannah Harlow, Joshua Grant, Jr., Mary Glover, James Grant, and Andrew Grant. The gross value of the estate was $255, of which $134 was due from the estate of her mother, Susannah Whitehouse. The estate included "a small quantity of old furniture of trifling value," but no land or buildings. After expenses the net value of the estate, $163,93, was equally divided among her five children. See text of probate records {17}.

Widow Mary Grant is buried with children John and Susanna at a private cemetery on Rte. 137, 2 miles south of Smithfield, in the back of the old Whitehouse farm (behind the present Whitehouse cemetery).
